Each school has a class of 2028 type thread, but not dedicated to parents per se. Brown’s is here.
I would order on Amazon today while you still can.
3 doses of Plan B have now been acquired and I can sleep a little better at night now.
Thanks a lot.
Plan B is one of the least effective hormonally-based forms of contraception available. She may want to see a doctor or the student health center for a more effective, consistent prescription if her lifestyle requires it.
I didn’t see any press that those are being legislated away or even threatened by a temporary legal ruling.
I plan to send S24 with a box of condoms this fall. He’s going to look at me like I’m crazy but better to be prepared and not need them than to be unprepared and impulsive…
I got a box of 50 on Amazon and am sending him down with those- like you said better prepared than not.
Any college female’s “lifestyle”, as you put it, requires being prepared for sexual assault. Even if using another form of birth control, Plan B is an excellent item for any college student’s first aid kit. Unfortunately, there is a good chance they or a friend will need it.
I have every intention of sending my S25 off to college with a variety pack of condoms, Plan B, and a copy of the book Ejaculate Responsibly. He knows by now that this is one area I’m not going to hesitate to embarrass him about, and he also knows that I’m willing to do it because I care about him and what fathering a child without being ready for it could mean — to him, to the child, and to the child’s mother.
I am sending all of that with my own kid, along with narcan - all things that when you NEED them you need them RIGHT NOW, and not maybe tomorrow or after class if I can get a shuttle to the CVS, etc. And she knows I will resupply with no questions asked, so if a friend NEEDS SOMETHING RIGHT NOW, give it to them!
Also plan on sending a solid plastic wastebasket (vs a cute wicker one or something) as they may also need something like that RIGHT NOW.
Yep.
For example:
Am going to quietly include a pack of condoms for D24 in the med/1st aid kit. D24 is not sexually active at this time but she’s going on birth control pills this summer anyway. The Plan B is a “just in case” she or any other girls she knows needs it. Not used as a primary form of birth control but it’ll be there just in case she or anybody needs it. Narcan is going in the 1st aid kit too. Not because I expect her to do opioids but drug use at colleges is pretty wide spread and you never know what can happen. Besides, with all of the fentanyl laced pills out there these days, you or a friend could be minutes from death if somebody doesn’t have this on hand.
As a like minded parent from a state that isn’t limiting such things, PM me if you ever need someone to send a ‘care package.’
I have already sent plan b to boarding school with my D24. She has instructions to let her friends know she has it, knowing that I will replace it without any questions, and for whoever to take it asap and follow up with a medical appointment.
Same goes for narcan. This is not an “oh take it and everything will suddenly be good”. Both narcan and plan b are just one step. Medical attention (an appt w a dr for plan b, and a call to 911 for narcan) also needs to happen, and I’ve made that very clear to her.
I didn’t say that my kid is going to use it as a primary means of birth control. It’ll be there just in case. She’s going to go on the pill this summer. So if she or anybody else she knows needs it, there’ll be 3 doses available in her room for whoever needs it.
The 2 forms of reg contraception (pill+condom) can be plan A. Todays purchase can be literally Plan B.
And then Plan C if she were to become pregnant and chose to terminate the pregnancy, would be for me to get her to CA or NM where she could have that procedure done (assuming this fall’s state ballot measure in AZ were to not pass…I’m pretty sure it will pass, in which case Plan C would be to get her home to AZ to have it done here).
You never know what another student could be going through. She might end up with a friend who is very low income and can’t afford the $40-50 price of Plan B. So if my kid has a dose on hand and is willing to give it to the other student in a time of need, she can choose to do that.
Glad I’m not the only one reacting to “lifestyle”.
Also, the point of the post (if you read back) was sending an emergency supply to an AZ bound daughter. No one is suggesting that Plan B is her birth control.
DS whittled down his list to top 3 and for a long time, I thought Purdue was in the lead. He loved the campus when he visited even though it was the coldest day of the last few years. He could see himself on campus and I liked that there was a path for him to try out different engineering streams before figuring out that his current choice of Mech E was the right one. He went to WPI accepted day with dad today and liked it too. Dad thinks that WPI will be a better fit as S24 leans more hands on and their robotics program and all their project based learning opportunities sounds wonderful. I was hopeful that we would be putting down a deposit today but doesn’t look like it. I am having S24 make a pros and cons list and do a one to one comparison. Might use the random choice method after and see if he can articulate why one vs the other. Right now, he is very confused and has to take the time to work it out on his own. Looks like he will be the last in his peer group to decide-meanwhile, he has two big competitions that he is excited for in the next few weeks and 7AP exams to prep for… I am ready to move on to the details-move in dates, dorm choices etc. few more weeks…breathe in, breathe out…anyone else going silently crazy like me?
Thanks for the reminder about narcan. S24 is not the partying type but better to be prepared or to be in a position to help. I will have to look into narcan training as I am not sure he (or I, for that matter) can spot when it is needed and how it should be given.
The daughter is actually in AZ right now, but will be attending college in TX, which also has very restrictive abortion laws. And since this new court ruling occurred just yesterday here in AZ, not knowing whether Plan B medication will still be available or not still in AZ (I did a search online and could find zero info about it), I figured better safe than sorry and opted to purchase some now instead of later…since I had planned all along to buy some anyway before she left the nest in August. I just hadn’t expected to have to do it so quickly on a random day in April!
Really nice female CVS employee & I ended up having a great conversation about the whole thing this morning about it all. She told me about going to a Planned Parenthood with a friend as a teenager in the 80s and getting chastised at the pharmacy afterwards for being a teenager getting birth control pills. Based on my gut and the twittering amongst people around here, I have a feeling that the abortion ban will be short lived, though, and the fall ballot state constitutional referendum will pass with flying colors.
In the meantime, I’m sort of a realist and feel compelled to deal with what the state of affairs currently is, not what it might be down the road.
But hey…I’ve been doing this whole “be prepared” thing since my kids were in diapers. All it took was ONE time with going on a short road trip to visit relatives and I didn’t pack enough diapers to get us to our destination and after that, I always packed 3 times as many diapers as I thought we’d need. Heck, on one epic 6 1/2 hr road trip from AZ to San Diego, D24 went through 6 DIAPER CHANGES. And had to change her onesie TWICE because of blow outs. I don’t miss those adventures! LOL.
I have a D24 headed to Rice in the fall from out of state and on the Rice website under reproductive health, it says that Plan B is legal in Texas, and they provide it to students at the reproductive health center.
I also found this information:
Just for a bit of peace of mind about that part of the picture. Abortion is, of course, mostly illegal. D24 is looking forward to getting politically involved in these sorts of issues, which, to be honest, are not affecting somewhat affluent college kids who can find support or other options, but really affecting poor women in Texas with no access to health care.
Couple important facts
-
The Red Zone between Aug and November is when 50% of Sexual Assaults take place on campuses
-
Date rape occupancies are significantly underreported
-
The reported sexual assault/rape cases occurring in a specific city/town are publicly available information, and lows on to asses the probability of being a victim in a specific college town/coty
Me! My son is deciding on his two runners up and is on the waitlist for his number 1. It’s tough. Seems like most kids have decided, and I wish he could say the same! He’ll prob wait to commit until 5/14!
