Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Ugh, that stinks. I’m sorry.

Our high school lost power this morning, apparently about 3/4 of the way into the AP Gov exam. But apparently the kids (sophomores) haven’t been told yet if their exams will be invalidated.

ugh–that’s awful–I’m sorry!

S has lit on Wednesday and calc next week. Amherst doesn’t give AP credit and no placement credit for lit, so there’s literally no reason for him to take it (if I mention that we already paid for it, at least two of my kids yell “sunk cost fallacy” at me), but he says he wants to anyway because “it’s fun.” I guess he should take calc on the extremely off chance that he ends up majoring in something that requires calculus and wants the placement (I’m not sure he views that one as fun). But at least the pressure’s off for both of them.

Today S24 is taking stats that he needs for placement and tomorrow he is taking lit which would get him out of a prerequisite, if he got a 5 which will never happen since his teacher hasn’t shown them anything from the test. Sigh. He is debating bothering with physics next week since that has no placement benefits and the teaching was board line at best. Ugh.
The down side of lacs is they get nothing for AP tests, but are expected to take many and do well in them…

My DH and I met in another country that we were both visiting and had two days together. He headed off to medical school and we survived that long distance, plus residency. I really do believe if the timing is right and it is meant to be it all somehow works out. A friend of mine has recently reconnected with an old boyfriend from high school and they are having such a great time reconnecting and dating. It is fun to see her so happy.

Mine is doing stats today too. He’s stressing because his teacher didn’t cover a few chapters, he had to try learn on his own last night.

S24 had his one and only AP exam yesterday morning so he is basically done. He only needs to come into the building to meet with his senior project advisor once a week and the project is finished May 23.

Now he is realizing all the things he needs to do to get ready for college orientation which is June 24/25. He is required to take a math placement exam. They get three tries. If he does not get a certain score, he is required to take a math class for zero credit as a pre requisite for the required math class for his major. This would absolutely suck. He missed the score by ONE point the first time he took it so he is doing some practice modules to try and get a better score. He also has to do three other on-line modules required by the school prior to orientation. One is on financial literacy, one is from his college major and one is on some other topic I can’t remember. Each one is about 45 minutes or so, nothing terrible but still a lot now that he is done with being in school mode. And finally, they require an online foreign language placement test. This needs to be done in the next couple of weeks. So he is trying to get these all done, balanced with senior project and his paying jobs. Hoping I can convince him to get the bulk of them done this coming weekend as the weather up here in MA looks terrible. Rain rain rain.

Prom is May 29 and graduation is May 31. It is coming up quickly.

D had Gov yesterday and has Stats today. Then she has Psych and Lit and since Seminar’s exam is the same time as Stats, gets to come back after graduation to take it. She was inclined not to bother until she realized that all she needs is a 3 to get 3 hours of philosophy credit (which is her intended second major).

All she needs is 3s on everything to get credit, but if she gets a 4 on Lit she’ll get another 3 hours (she’s only received 4s and 5s previously) she’ll start as a sophomore. Otherwise she’d be one hour short.

That is crazy. The school must not have many kids who go to northeast public schools because NY and NJ don’t end until the last week of June so try get all that done while still in school sounds like a lot. S24 has to do one placement test but it isnt due until August.

S24 is lucky that the classes that matter for placement are taught by someone who has been doing this for 20 years. He will be well prepared for stats and calc bc at least.

D24’s college hasn’t yet received the CLEP exam scores that we ordered through College Board 3 wk ago. It’s a little frustrating. D24 is getting to learn more about adulting. She’s decided to postpone the online language placement test until after graduation. Not what I would choose but hey, it’s your life kiddo. :joy:

Twice now she’s made plans to go shopping with friends only to forget (until I reminded her) that she not only needs to pick her sister up from school at 2:45 but also has to be at work that evening at 5:30. Um duh…it’s all there in your phone. Look it up. Get a clue, kiddo.

S24 has really not taken his foot off the gas. His midterm grades were up to his usual standards (and at this point he is largely doing “group” projects himself, since most of his classmates have fully checked out), last Saturday was The Girlfriend’s prom, this Saturday is his prom, he helped lead his spring sport to the playoffs (after moving up a division), and they won their first round game yesterday so playoffs will continue at least another round . . . at least classes are ending for him this week since he is moving on to a Senior Project, and he is socializing a lot still, but he is definitely not just in cruise mode!

And not to complain, but we organized both the post-game senior event and will host the end of the season party for his spring team, we are tossing in D30’s end of 6th grade party and also end of season party for HER spring sport team, and in the middle of all this, we are trying to help S24 make sure he makes all his deadlines for housing and first-year program applications at WUSTL.

And in fact I asked if he still wanted our administrative help with that stuff, and he said, “Sure!” And then immediately was on to, “But that deadline is not until X!” And as usual the problem is all that stuff happens very quickly once the deadlines start, so it would be nice to actually get ahead of the process. But I guess if that never happened at any point during the college application process, I should not have expected any different now.

Oh well, busy kids, busy parents I guess!

Yes it is down south where most kids are done early-mid May.

So here’s something interesting. ONE parent of a sophomore post on the FB parent group for D24’s college about the food in the dining hall and how their kid is looking to live off campus next year because of it and now everybody’s all in a twitter about it. Lots of parents of incoming freshmen asking “What’s wrong with the food?”

Nothing. The food there is fine. The ONE parent’s sophomore is just bored of the food and wants to cook more themselves and doesn’t want to have to share a kitchen with people.

They can all calm down now. After 2 yr of dining hall food, just about anybody would be ready to cook for themselves. It doesn’t mean that your kid should attend a different college just because of one person’s food preferences. :slightly_smiling_face:

My daughter is set to get several credits for her APs at Mount Holyoke. She calculated it and has (I believe) 12 already and if she does as expected on her APs this year will have earned 12 more. They are generous with what they offer - you can come in with up to 32 credits from AP tests.

More AP drama this morning. 10 mins before leaving the house D24 looks up Econ test regulations and discovers she can’t bring a scientific calculator (definitely not the time to check on this :flushed:). She rushes to grocery store but they don’t sell calculators. The staff saw she was upset and looked through their cashier drawers and found her a calculator to borrow. What wonderful people- they sent her off with hugs and smiles!

Most/many LACs do give some credit; Macalester capped at 6. S19 could have graduated a semester early, but after one year totally messed up by covid and another where he was studying abroad half the year, he really wanted a regular entire year on campus senior year. But even just being able to place out of things was really helpful for him as a math major. For this kid, as an English/Music major at a school with a totally open curriculum (none of the English classes have pre-reqs at all), he really just can’t do anything with the AP credits. The flip side of the open curriculum, of course, is that it’s super easy to double (or triple!) major anyway since there are no requirements other than the first year seminar and whatever classes you need in your major/s.

This is way too much AP drama for one year! But I’m glad it worked out!
