Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Yep mine has stats and human geo today. Didn’t bother studying for human geo- since no schools give credit we paid to dual enroll at the CC. Hope it counts that way.
But a 4 on stats would be great, so fingers crossed. Tomorrow is lit, I can’t really figure out the value of a 4+ on that for her school (Syracuse). Then prom and the final three weeks…gulp

My S24 has 5 AP classes and is mostly coasting. He will get credit for a 3+ and already got a 5 on Lang last year so Lit really won’t offer additional credit. He is a little competitive though, and wants to do well. But, other than these exams, he is finished with school. Last week, he passed the gavel to the new Student Council President, and that one was a bit emotional and hard for him. He has really loved his high school, and is going to miss it.

D24 is busy with senior projects and getting ready for a big publications banquet (she is Editor of the school paper, and Co-Editor of the art and literary magazine, so publications are her THING). H and I are heading up to visit her this weekend and see her in the Spring play, so definitely a very busy conclusion to the year for her and then she comes home and starts her first job! (She got an incredible job a writer in the marketing department of a Fortune 500, so she is excited but very nervous!)

I’m working on graduation party and we are in the middle of a construction project necessitated by a leak in one bathroom that caused all kinds of damage. Not fun, but almost finished!! Unfortunately, the leak caused a lot of damage in my daughter’s bedroom and we had to rip up all the flooring and replace a wall, etc., so we are kind of forced to redecorate and she feels like it isn’t her room anymore. Not the message I wanted to send her. I’ve tried to get her input on paint colors and new tile and fabric and all that, but she just tells me everything is “fine.” Hopefully it really will be and she will love it and still feel like it is her own space.

This restores my faith in humanity. What a lovely story - hope your D takes those good vibes and rocks the exam!

D24 was eliminated from sr. assassin last night. It came down to a duel (really, a race from opposite ends of the football field to a single water gun in the center). She had a good run! I think she’s somewhat relieved to not have to carry her water gun everywhere, and be constantly watching her back.

This is the last completely normal week of school. Next week she has three AP exams (calc, physics, bio :scream_cat: ), the week after seniors are on a 2 hour delayed start each day while other grades take state assessments. Then comes prom, sr. picnic, sr. skip day and finals (she doesn’t have any). Graduation June 21st!

Jealous of you all- my DS24 (in the British system) is going to soon a start a five-week-long slog of exams (4 A-levels, 3 papers each). He’s been revising several hours a day for weeks and weeks, hardly going out. Darned ridicolus UK 2-year winner-take-all exams. His future US LAC will just give him a few credits, but he still rightly feels he needs to do well because of pride and the fact that in England your A-levels results follow you for a long time…
To top it all, I get to miss his older sister’s US College graduation :rage:- my wife is going but we can’t really both abandon him in the middle of his exams to cross the Atlantic…

I haven’t heard of kids playing Assassin at our high school, but there’s currently an elaborate prom proposal contest. All of them are infinitely better than my underwhelming prom proposal in the 90’s. Anyhow, the photos and videos are fun to follow as a parent.

Only 2 of 5 AP exams will matter for my kid and they just need 3s. School is pretty much over for us, a few weeks of senior events, award night, end of year parties, etc. and then finally a bit of free time!

Well AP Stats and Government are done. Son is confident about Government but a bit unsure about Stats, he feels he definitely got a 3 but not sure if he pulled off a 4 or 5 which is needed for college to accept it. Needless to say I grabbed a box of Dunkin’ munchkins to help him forget about the exams finished and concentrate on the ones left.

AP Lit for D24 tomorrow then she is done! She already has final grades in a few of her college courses and is finished but waiting for grades in a few others. Torch has been passed on the clubs she was president/editor in chief. She was asked to do an introduction at graduation, so will be standing on stage for half of graduation apparently. It still does not seem real.

My plan is to NOT join a parent FB group for D24’s college, and the kind of stuff @sbinaz mentioned is part of the reason why. Our local school district page was 95% complaints/arguing and 5% information I would get in other ways.

I wasn’t expecting this, but I love how sparse the communication is from VT to parents. D24 knows that I now expect her to handle day to day college stuff, including troubleshooting, as much as she can. My roles now are $ and emotional support human, not manager & knower of many things.

TBH, it hasn’t been 100% smooth sailing (would have been nice for her to have her passport by now, etc.), but the lessons being learned I would rather her learn now. I know she can do it, and it’s been good for our relationship as it grows toward adult/adult.

They really don’t like to get to the point, do they?

Looks to me like under Liberal Skills/Writing Skills there are 3 required classes.

1-- Studio 1 (such as WRT105)
2-- Writing Intensive (big list of approved classes)
3-- Studio 2 (such as WRT205)

A 4 on AP Lang gets you Studio 1 & 2 with credit for WRT105 and WRT 205.

A 4 on AP Lit gets WRT 105 (which she might already have gotten with AP Lang) and ENG 151, which is on the approved list of Writing Intensive classes.

So combined, AP Lang&Lit will complete the 3 required writing skills classes. AP Lit alone would leave her still needing the Studio 2 class (WRT205)

That’s my best guess at least!

I joined one and was pretty stunned about the general lack of information most parents seem to have (also empathy). I know CC is a pretty well-informed group on the whole, but sheesh.

UMASS Amherst has a great parent page. I think it is partly volunteer run and maybe part of the Office of Parent & Family. They keep it very positive and helpful, which is a welcome change.

Similar LAC - Bates allows 4 AP credits, usually for a 4 or 5. I don’t think you get any credit for a 3. Mine was able to skip Intro to Psych with her psych AP class, which was nice.

S24 is done with AP Gov and he said this was pretty easy. He has AP Physics C and AP French next week and AP stats the week after. The school has so many kids takings Ap stats they had to divide the test into 2 different days. I think in our school 80%+ kids take AP stats.

He feels confident about AP Stats but not really sure about AP Physics C as he feels they have not gone in depth for some of the topics. Lets see how he it goes. I would like him to get a 4 in AP Physics C but may be hard as of now.
The College he is going to is pretty good with Ap credit and depending on how he does and the credits he will get he will be close to the Sophomore status.

We have registered for Orientation on June 10th/11th and high school graduation is June 7th. He also has to take the Math placement test before Orientation. So we need to figure out how and when he will take the placement test. I wish the school would use AP calc or SAT Math score to replace Placement but looks like they don’t

Omg you’re my hero! We have been struggling with this and the math/ science requirements. This makes sense for lit, thank you! (Though they register in June and don’t get AP scores til July, so…)
She will (hopefully) get a 3 or better on AP stats today, which she thinks gets her out of one of the two math/science requirements, leaving her with one science/ lab still a requirement. I think.

Also trying to figure out if there is an AP geo? She’s taking AP human geo dual enrollment. Syracuse lists AP geo on their AP chart, not AP human geo but I’m thinking they are the same. I googled AP geo and nothing comes up.

S24 and his teammate have not yet been eliminated in senior assassin. We’ve had a fun situation where S24’s sister and I noticed a classmate of his - slightly disguised with a hoodie over his head - hanging out in a store across the street from our building. (We live in the city.) After a quick warning text, S24 sought refuge at a friend’s house and snuck home after dark. It’s been entertaining but at the same time S24 is ready to be done, I think. He doesn’t want to be eliminated for being careless but he wouldn’t mind if someone came up with a clever attack that eliminated him while preserving his pride.

He is heading into playoffs for his sport after an undefeated season. He has been loving this last season, and I think he would prefer to enjoy the last few games without worrying about assassins lying in wait after each game and practice. (The sports schedule makes him a predictable target.)

Also, I continue to have some lingering concerns about the fact that is not playing his sport in college (other than maybe on a fairly non-competitive club team). He is currently sulking because an informal scrimmage against another team was canceled today. This is despite the fact that he had a varsity game yesterday, has a playoff game on Friday, and practice the next couple of days!

No AP classes or final exams at his school, so there isn’t much happening on the academic front anymore even though we still have a good month until graduation.

Your post made me laugh out loud … in part because when I asked S24 this morning if he needed a calculator for the Econ exam, he said “no” in a way that made it seem like I was silly even for asking that question. And now I know … the answer is yes, he needed one, and also he does not own the type of calculator he could have used anyway. So on the positive side … he was not stressed about not having the right calculator!

Out of curiousity … does he need a calculator for the macro exam? I’m assuming he does need one for Calc next week, but that the scientific one is ok?

Hopefully the school had extras so he didn’t get stressed upon arrival! Turns out my daughter’s school did but she was glad to have the one belonging to Albertsons (my favorite grocery store from now on). She also thinks that they let kids by even with scientific calculators. I don’t know about Macro. D24 had to drop that class due to her concussion.

The scientific one is the right one for Calculus APs.

These Facebook parent groups are insane. Full of SO MANY complaints. Just let your kids navigate problems themselves!! After all, they are adults now.
