Adding: I’m impressed that your D can enjoy college overall despite the roommate issues. It shows maturity and an ability to compartmentalize the problem and not let it spill into every aspect of her college life. You should be proud of the strong daughter you have raised.
Oh my goodness—this brought tears to my eyes! Thank you for your kind words.
In our family the “haha” item is a Christmas ornament my my mom gave to S25…she got it at one of those little mall shops that personalizes ornaments, and she had in mind that it would be “#1 Grandson “ because he is the oldest boy…. But somehow the order got messed up and it says “#1 Grandma” with S25’s name in the personalization space.
. She gave it to him anyway and we laugh a lot about it every year.
I’m so glad you could order a second copy! I was going to suggest a correction with permanent marker, but this is a better idea. In about 1995 I received a gift from a friend that he ordered from Hershey’s. It was a birthday greeting carved into milk chocolate. But I lived in southern California and it came as chocolate soup. I called them and said, “could I please have a hard copy of the message” meaning in my nerdy way, the message written out on paper…they said sure and sent a new [unmelted] hard copy. Sometimes the companies fix things even if it’s not their fault!
The melting reminded me of another time, when my DS25 was a toddler and had many allergies and had to get most medicines as compounded suppositories into cocoa butter instead of with the other “inactive” ingredients (don’t get me started on the insurance bozos who said that an “inactive” ingredient wouldn’t have an allergenic effect)…but it was always very expensive. Once a whole set of meds melted on the way home in the summer (now in Massachusetts) and were totally unusable and I just called the pharmacy in tears and they said come in and we’ll redo it [for free]!! So you never know.
I also have kept and use frequently, a duffel with our name spelled wrong in a huge monogram. It’s from LLBean and I typed in the name correctly and they said they’d replace it, but that seemed wasteful and I like a little anonymity while travelling. The weird thing is that it was a misspelling that I’ve never seen in real life. Think Jonez instead of Jones.
And really, who can actually predict the “Class of” future anyway? My kid who graduated high school in 2017 graduated college after a leave of absence and severe health issues in 2023, and my kid who graduated high school in 2023 is on track to graduate college in 2026.
Putting a future year on a photo is a roll of the dice. And @OctoberKate, maybe your kid will take it as a sign that they should major in architecture (which is very often a five-year program)!![]()
I think this is worth an email to customer service, too.
Oops - I see it all worked out! Yay! I hadn’t see the follow up on this
skimmed ahead too fast!
Although there are some schools where you are always associated with your starting class, regardless of when you graduate. Some of the Ivys do this. I am pretty sure both Princeton and Dartmouth, maybe Yale too? Not sure it extends beyond this small group though..
Your point still stands, of course, but some bizarre nuance and traditions out there!
And my 25 is at a coop school, so they are class of 2025 (since some graduate in 29 and some 30) to muddy waters more:)
Well my husband DID say that we should keep both… you know, just in case…
So S25 missed his class registration window this morning. Remember his advisor was requiring a four year gantt chart of his academic plan be emailed to her prior to meeting with her. He did that, and sent it to her, but apparently not until early this week. What he didn’t realize, is that until you meet with the advisor, you cannot get the code you need to log on to the registration website.
I told him that and on Tuesday he told me his plan to email her, point out that their meeting wasn’t scheduled until Friday, but his registration window was for 8:00AM on Thursday. He asked if, since she had the plan and he agreed to meet with her on Friday could she send him the log in information early so he could register on time and… she said no.
Unclear if he’ll be able to register tomorrow since his window will have closed, or if he’ll have to wait until it reopens for everyone. As it is, two of the classes he wanted to take - that were available this morning - are no longer available.
Ugh. Honestly it seems like it’s more complicated / involved than it needs to be. (And not just at that school.)
Oh! I will have to ask my oldest if that’s true. He graduated early from P (‘19) and was so relieved b/c he got the whole P-rade and the rest of it, but the actual ‘20 kids had much of it (or all of it?) cancelled due to the pandemic.
Oh boy that is frustrating.
Not much consolation, but my S25 slept through registration for spring classes last week so didn’t get his top choices …
It all worked out OK in the end. He has a few unusual classes that probably wouldn’t have been on his radar before, but now that he’s read the syllabi, he is actually finding some positives and is looking forward to them. My only concern is that neither of them help him fulfill core requirements. Hopefully your son will either find a way to get into the classes he wanted or find some new options that might surprise him.
Thank you for the commiseration! The good (?) news in all of this is that S25 is 100% taking ownership of this screw up. It’s his fault, he had weeks to schedule the meeting with the advisor and he didn’t do it. Then i don’t know if he didn’t realize that it had to happen BEFORE registration to get the login code, but some simple research would’ve revealed that. Anyway, in texting with me yesterday he noted that this was his error, and that he’d do better next time. So hopefully, if nothing else, this is a learning experience.
Looking at what’s available this morning, it appears there are no sections of the public speaking course that he’s supposed to take Spring of Freshman year available. I know it’s a small class, but there are 44 regular sections, three hybrid sections, and three honors only sections (there are 11 seats in an honors section, but non-honors students are not allowed to take those. I’m moderately annoyed, as all honors students have already registered, that these seats are going to waste - especially because honors students can take seats in regular classes, which they probably did because that’s an 8:00 course with 11 seats open, I’m sure they didn’t want the time.) I told him to ask the advisor if she can override and put him in the honors section, or if she can get him on a waitlist for anything else.
He also wanted an accounting class, and the only section still available is either at 7pm or fully asynchronous. Given how bad his ADHD is, both of those are really not good options for him. I suggested he register for the fully asynchronous and try to get on a waitlist for anything else. He’s already got one other class next semester that is only offered asynchronous, I really don’t want him doing two out of five classes online.
My S25 had everything ready for registration and then last minute decided to change things. And has since changed them multiple times lol. He’s realizing just how much his ap credits got him and trying to figure out if he wants to double major because he’ll be done with gen ed after spring semester and needs a direction to pick classes from. He’s also on track to graduate in 3 years otherwise! (If he doesn’t transfer which is highly possible) What a great problem to have!
He ended up with two asynchronous classes in spring for his science lab and an art class. Both to fill gen ed requirements. At first I was against any online classes but he’s done so well first semester (4.0 After being a 3.0 HS student!!) and is now so involved in campus with clubs, student govt, emerging leaders program, etc that he almost HAS to do it to fit it all in. I’m amazed and proud and just having fun watching it all unfold
Last time he was home (he has a car and is only 2 hours away so we’ve seen him once a month at least) he mentioned just how lazy he realizes he was in hs - lol.
I would suggest that that’s good news, no question mark.
The ability to recognize mistakes one makes and to work on improving from them is a weirdly uncommon skill.
I could be wrong about Princeton, but I thought that was how they did it? I am sure some of the ivy schools do! Like, no matter when you graduate, you are in when you start class, alumni notes, reunions, etc.
W/o too many details, I have a friend who went to an Ivy, dropped out for like 15-20 years, went back and finished, and is still listed as original class year on all materials - he just even won a big award.
Back to report on S25’s registration saga.
First, thank you @dfbdfb for the reminder that recognizing mistakes and learning from them is more than half the battle. I couldn’t agree more, so we’ll chalk this up as a good learning experience overall.
Good especially because it looks like things will work out well enough. He has to take five courses. He’s currently registered for four, and on a wait list for the fifth (the public speaking one). His advisor helped him craft the note asking to be let in to the closed course. She had him note that he needed the course now, because he has a summer internship in a management position (technically true, but I’m guessing he won’t do much management) and so this was a skill that he should have before hand.
He’s taking a literature course at 8 in the morning - which is probably not going to go particularly well for him, as that’s a time and subject that are both struggles for him. But he’s at least moderately interested in the subject matter, so we’ll call that a win.
He couldn’t get into the accounting class he wanted, but that’s ok, most people in his major don’t take it until sophomore year so he’s not “behind”. Instead, he’s required to take three electives within his major from a list of about 40 or so. There’s one that sounded interesting to him, that he’s allowed to take since he has sophomore status, and that had open spots. So boom, he’s doing that. Something that likely he wouldn’t have gotten to until much later.
There was an open section of calculus. At a not great late afternoon time, but, whatever, he’s in. And the last class is fully asynchronous, but for the subject of the class, I’m fine with that. And what is the subject you may wonder? It’s called “Management of Personal Computer Applications.” Friends, based on what I can easily see online, I’m nearly 100% sure this class is “how to do excel and powerpoint”. For the same number of credits as his next level of calculus. This is a required class and I cannot stop laughing at it. Watch, it will be sneakily hard, but at the moment, I’m entertained. (Why yes, I do use excel all day every day.)
So, let’s just hope he gets off that waitlist for the public speaking class, and maybe during the open period he can move calculus to a better time. But for now, mission accomplished.
This got me to check on whether my C25 registered on time. I am a bit relieved to say that the answer is yes.
The child is registered for Intro to Higher Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Phonetics, and a 6-credit honors seminar.
(I kind of adore the way mathematicians title their courses. Intro to Higher Mathematics? Yeah, that introduction has Calc 2 as a prerequisite.)
Phonetics fulfills a requirement for the linguistics major, but is the version C25 is taking is the one offered by the SLP program rather than the lx program. Honestly, give C25’s interests, I think it’s the right call, and will be more interesting for the kid.
And I was relieved to see that registration for the two math courses went without a hitch, because that means that Calc 2 ended up transferring in as Calc 2—initially Calc 2 and 3 had transferred in as math electives, because C25’s primary major is listed as linguistics, and they’re simply elective credit for a lx major, But apparently they got reclassified, so everything is fully on track now.
D25’s school has them sign up for both fall and spring semesters when they meet their advisors at orientation. Much lower stress.
Meanwhile, I have zero clue what classes S23 is taking now or will be taking in spring. That boy will be the death of me I swear.
I was referring to registration, not about class graduation date. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.
