Accepting offer and housing question-- My daughter still is waiting on a few European schools to release decisions so she has not accepted her offer yet. momofboiler1 and others…do you know when the Housing portal opens and how this works? She was accepted into the Honors College so perhaps this is just a matter of “accepting” the offer? It’s tough to accept for her since she wants to know the results of her full cycle of applications. THANKS SO MUCH! I really truly pray she decides to Boiler Up! Thanks
There is no benefit to doing housing early at Purdue and with an honors college acceptance, she should be in the honors residence anyway. Just make sure she doesn’t miss the deadline which I believe is May 5th.
I am going to miss the Purdue’s For me (march timing won’t work), but going to do a normal campus visit in April. Will I miss out a lot ?
I’m going to attend one this Friday. Will share my feedback.
Thanks so much!!! Yesss I recall it was like March or April for my son (he is a senior so that was LOOONG AGO, lol!). Thanks so much! He was also Honors, and as I recall it was guaranteed housing. He had things signed in March (?)…but it is such a busy time for these High School seniors and I don’t want her to miss anything imporant! THANK YOU!
I would encourage you to not wait until the very last minute to initiate the acceptance. Allow a few days of cushion… in case the systems, procedures have any delays to upload the housing application.
A few years ago- some folks waited, got caught up in delays… and ended up missing the “guaranteed housing” window. It was not a good experience for them.
Just make sure your ducks are in a row for you to hit the submit button for housing by the deadline. You can check the requirements… but you can withdraw your housing app if you changed your mind. The deposit loss may be minimal.
Do I have a chance at Purdue Engineering (AAE) or should I not get my hopes up?
Unweighted: Freshman 3.1, Sophomore 3.6, Junior 3.85 (expected) and same for SR
I increased course rigor heavily from sophomore to junior and will from junior to senior while also increasing grades, so will that upward growth negate my horrible start?
SAT: expected ~1450-1500 with superscore and similar level for ACT
Very strong ECs and demonstrated interest:
Air Camp
Shadow day at an AFB
8-week paid summer Internship at AFRL
Many personal AAE projects (Scratch built planes, afterburning EDF, DIY wind tunnel)
Leadership position in engineering club
Leadership position in science olympiad
Founded a fun social club
Leadership position in marching band+3rd chair trumpet in concert band
Founded AAE Club
My counselors told me that my poor performance earlier in my high school career might be covered by my very strong ECs and upward growth, but it’s really up in the air and that I should ask an online forum what their thoughts are. Any comments you have would be greatly appreciated no matter what they are because I’m just trying to learn as much as I can about this whole process. Thanks!
This year’s application numbers are like no other’s. Mine is deferred from EA to ED and has 3.89 uw, 1490. We are international though. Having said, her school usually quite a handful of admits a year. It’s a tough year.
I think it will be tough but not impossible. Make sure you have good essay. Make sure you take AP calc. Also consider different major maybe polytechnic if you really want Purdue.
Purdue cares very much about rigor. If you can continue the upward trajectory with your grades while handling increase rigor, I think you have a chance, especially if you are in state. As noted, be sure to take AP calc and I’d also recommend AP physics C if it’s offered at your school.
Keep on doing your best and prepare well for the SAT/ACT.
I’d recommend doing an official “chance me/match me” once you have test scores and people can give you other recommendations for other good schools for your intended major.
I applied to Purdue AeroE with a 3.45 and was deferred and accepted last year. I think what helped the most was 1 my sat (1520) and the upwards trend in grades and classes. If you continue doing well or even going up in your difficult classes and you get a good test score I think it’s definitely possible
You should start a separate thread so that you can get more eyes on your post.
Anyone think decisions might come out today? I have noticed any portal changes yet.
maybe. I know lots of deferred kids (California) got admitted mid march last year
I think there was a post earlier that someone said they read a post on Reddit that the LOCI form goes away if the decision is coming. The LOCI is still there on the portal for us so not sure if it will come today.
Same here
We attended the Purdue’s For Me today, and loved it. Normal campus visit should also be fine, but at least for my DD—it was a game changer. It was very nicely organized; after the general fairs and sessions, academic sessions took over and lots of student ambassadors gave presentations, answered questions, along with college staff. The overall vibe was very positive, and made us feel like we’re already committed… lol…
For comparison—we toured UIUC and UW Madison earlier this week… yeah, pan-mid-west sojourn for this PNW family… lol.
DD really liked UIUC, and loved Madison… but Purdue just felt like home, the perfect fit… I feel what made a big difference is how she got to interact with a ton of students and they were all super friendly and helpful; it felt competitive but not cut-throat… I feel this kind of experience may be missing in a regular tour, but I’m not sure…
Thank you for reply! Glad your daughter enjoyed it. Now I want to try to make one of the for me days lol.
Purdue is not an easy ride but the kids are pretty great. Glad your family had a good visit!
Nice we felt the same when we visited a few years ago. Keep also in mind that some schools are better at putting these events and the right comparison would be badger day and IlliniFest. That is not to claim you will feel the same attending these competing events. We might attend one of them and will let you know. But you might have already made the decision ny then.
