Purdue University Early Action for Fall 2025 Admission

FYE is only for engineering majors.

Be aware that it’s very difficult for engineers to graduate more than a semester early because of all the course sequencing requirements, regardless of how many credits a students starts with.

Have your daughter look into subletting her last semester so you don’t need to get stuck paying 1/2 years rent. 1/3 of Purdue engineering students co op so kids are coming always coming and going (a percentage of other majors do too).

When are lottery decisions made these days? When my D was a student, they knew by late October which was plenty of time to find off campus housing.

when i look at the FYE requirement, she only miss that one engineering course. she already have up to cal 3 , physics /bio/chem/english/US hist and world. so there is really not much in the FYE left

FYE (for transition to major purposes) will include the first year engineering design course, and then the grades for whatever math and science course she starts with. I believe I read last year that some students were allowed to transition to major in January but I don’t know for sure. Hopefully another Purdue parent will jump in and answer that part.

My daughter also came in with many of those credits too. That isn’t unusual for Purdue engineering. If I’m recalling correctly she was one class shy of having “junior status” when she started, but the chem e sequence was such that the most she could have shaved off was 1 semester. She ended up not doing that so she could finish up her research and take some grad level classes for her concentration.

Some majors are easier to graduate early because of either fewer requirements or they are big enough that courses are offered every semester. Some of the smaller engineering majors (like chem E) have some required courses only offered either fall or spring, but not both.

My advice to parents for budgeting purposes, is to plan on taking all 8 semesters to graduate. If it’s 6 or 7, then it’s a bonus ; )

this is the part i do not understand. i am going to assume lots kids already have all couses other than the engineering class there is no AP associate. counting the history, econ and english and language/ cs… that is easily 1 year worth . so with the FYE, what you gonna do with 1st year? i supposed you can start taking classes from intended major? but whayt happen if you do not get in that major? isn’t that a yr entirely wasted

I am always confused about the ‘transfer credits’ thing - say if my son takes AP calc BC in high school, gets a 5, so he can skip the calculus class at Purdue? It doesn’t sound right as the AP Calc BC won’t be nearly as hard as the one taught at Purdue or any other top-tier engineering program. And even if it’s allowed, would the lack of the deep understanding of calculus post a potential risk for later courses that are highly depending on calculus? Or credits that can be transferred into college are those like foreign language for engineering but how many credits would be in that category?

Another question I have - is tuition (for undergraduate) calculated fixed, or based on the credits taken for a semester? If the former, one can take more courses without having to pay higher tuition, to either learn more stuff that could be useful later on in there career or graduate early?

It will be depends on kids, I insist my son retalke cal because it was not a smooth ride for him with ap cal bc, but I will allow my daughter skip. Ap cal was easy pizzy for her and she made comment after the exam that the test was so easy she will be shocked if she does not have 5. So I know she has solid understanding of the material On top of that she did cal 3 already in our local college,

I don’t know any undergraduate pay by credit. But they do usually have min to stay full time and max recommend credit, my son school uw Madison will let you petition if u want go over max. But I will suggest not to. College class is much heavy loaded, just imaging ap stat is full year high school but a semester in college. Ap cal ab or most ap course ( with exception of cal bc if u not already take ab , physics c and chem) all are year high school but a semester in colleges, so think what ur high school kid have to double their work load without fluffy class, that will be more or less college load

Tuition is fixed, not by credit, unless you are a part time student (less than 12 credits).

An engineering freshman with lots of AP credits just starts in the higher level class. Super common for freshman to be taking linear algebra or diff e q. It will just get them through their required math sequence earlier. My d opted to use the the Purdue Calc finals to figure out which math class to start in. If your student scores above an 80% they should feel comfortable moving ahead to the next sequence.

My daughter had friends who started in o chem but she opted to redo the chem sequence because her HS foundation wasn’t strong. Same with students starting in higher level physics. (Honors students skip mechanics altogether).

I will put in a plug to not skip the oral communication requirement. There are some great classes focused on project presentation and group dynamics.

For kids with lots of AP credits, there are courses for certifications, opportunities for minors and concentrations, and then graduate level courses that can be taken as an upperclassman.

IMO the risk of escalating too quickly is your boiler will need to meet the GPA to threshold to transition to their major with more difficult classes. It’s a balancing act.

The one thing to remember though is your student won’t be needing to make these decisions on their own as they will meet with their advisor (I believe still being done virtually) to discuss all of this and plan out their schedule. We found the advising at Purdue to be fantastic!

that is exactly what i am afraid of, if she take higher level class, she will ended with lower grade and not get into her intended major

Thanks! It’s good to know that they can use the Purdue’s calc final to determine if they need to take it or not. I’m always concerned that there might be something not covered in AP Calc but kinda important in further engineering courses. Is there a similar one for physics/AP Physics C/M?

What’s the GPA requirement for ETM, especially for ME? What if the student doesn’t meet the requirement then has to take a major that s/he doesn’t like? Sounds scary.

There is one, “3rd and West” University Residence Apt, opening for Fall 25 (3rd and West | Purdue University Residences)

from what i heard, {my nephew is a student there in aero, but he only has cal ab and chem, so he is fine). there is no “set” requirement. it is how many available. and it also effected by the year before you. so, in some years, if they over admitted and the quote for that major is more or less full, the year after might have a tougher time. so given the comments earlier that the last 2 year were over admitted, that makes me feel un easy

Were there any portal astrology signs last year that you won’t mind sharing?

My friend’s kid, who entered FYE last Aug as a junior based on credits, has just been accepted to Mechanical engineering for this spring semester. The kid can finish in 2-2.5 yrs based on ME curriculum but is planning to take another major that will together be done in 3.5 yrs total.

Is is solely based on GPA? I can’t imagine the frustration if one cannot get into their desired major, just because a bad grade from an unrelated class or taking one that’s advanced. Doesn’t make sense to me. At least the requirement should be transparent so students have a clue what to expect so can plan ahead.

I took a picture of my post from last year so i dont retype everything lol. Basically the loci (letter of continued interest) form appeared if the student is deferred, and a college of business form appeared for those accepted to business program.
As with any portal astrology, please take it with a grain of salt. Nothing is conclusive until a kid receives the actual admission result.

Thank you so much.
If I may ask, where did the LOCI and Business Form appear? Under Change Requests?
Also, you mentioned “before it disappeared; did it disappear after the decision was posted or before that?
