San Diego State Class of 2029 Freshman Discussion Thread

Maintaining the GPA is flexible. They do not like to see a GPA drop of more than 1 point or a bunch of C’s. Definitely no D’s or F’s.

Son accepted! Email yesterday.

CSU Capped Weighted GPA (found on CSU application with Maximum of 4.4): 4.28
Number of a-g courses taken 9-12th (Years/Semesters): 25 10th-11th for CSU GPA
Number of UC approved Honors/AP/IB or DE classes: 10
Intended Major: Environmental Science
Local/Non-local CA resident/OOS/International: Non-local, +CA resident
Honors College Invite: Not yet

He enjoyed touring campus last spring, and he is excited about SDSU.

Hi, my daughter was in the Honors college. She enjoyed it Freshman year. They are guaranteed to live in Zura ( one of the newer dorms) with the other Honors kids. They do have to minor interdisciplinary studies. By sophomore year she changed her major and minored in something else so ended up dropping Honors. Honors kids also required to study abroad.

Daughter admitted 5pm PST Tuesday December 17th.

Bio - Molecular/Cellular
4.33 CSU Gpa

Declined to state race or anything else.

Bittersweet because my first daughter was rejected from SDSU and I never understood why.

Hi! Question about the early January admissions. Is that also very high GPA, local and OOS?

Yes, just a continuation of early admits from December.

Do you know what the threshold is for “high” GPA? It seems like for December admits it was mostly 4.3+. Just curious if my daughter has a chance with 4.27 capped.

Sorry, SDSU does not disclose what their GPA criteria is for the Early admits but in general a CSU Capped weighted GPA of 4.0+. Over the many years that I have followed SDSU discussions, I have seen several High GPA applicants that were not admitted early but during the regular March decisions.

Since many of the Early admits will be invited to apply to the Honors college, the Honors states the following:

Typically, the average high school weighted GPA is approximately 4.29.

Don’t count on any from SDSU for out of state.

The holidays are over - time to start stewing over college applications again! I am wondering if SDSU will do early admissions this week like they did in 2024?

My son’s girlfriend got acceptance already for cognitive science (I think). She has a 4.6, has taken about 15 community college classes, and has no intention on going to SDSU (it was her safety). My son is still waiting for his decision letter..

Congrats! Keep us posted on your son!

Just an FYI, the maximum CSU GPA is 4.4 due to the Honors cap so just wanted to clarify this point for future and current applicants if they are reading your post.

and has no intention on going to SDSU (it was her safety)

I’m sorry, but these kind of statements really bother me. There are plenty of other kids who would have loved the spot. If she had no intention of even considering it, why take the spot from someone else for another notch on her belt? Safeties are supposed to schools that they’d be happy to go to, but can get in pretty easily and is affordable. It doesn’t sound like she ever would have been happy there, which is not a safety. It just a throwaway.

Fair point. But historical yield data includes such applicants and in reality there are not taking a spot from others.

Note that the capped calculation is skewed to produce higher GPAs for students who take fewer classes - so a more rigorous schedule with more classes can actually produce a lower capped GPA. I would hope (and think) that UC and CSUs (SDSU) take this into account. My kid has straight As, high rigor but takes 7-8 classes per semester, so it automatically means the highest capped he can have is ~4.27.

Same thing for my son. It’s super annoying and I hope the school looks at the rigor if they don’t include them in the GPA. Makes we worried they don’t as I don’t see the point in not including them in the GPA.

Correct and the # of A-G courses taken above the minimum requirements is considered in the decision process along with academic preparation for the Intended major.

Information from the SDSU website:

While we look at all of the college-prep coursework you have taken during high school, we also consider your performance and the number of units taken in courses most relevant to predict success in your intended academic discipline.

We consider the breadth and depth of your academic record, and encourage you to challenge yourself by taking a rigorous curriculum including Advanced Placement (AP), honors, and/or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes.

I totally agree w/you! I have no clue why she applied but she applied to over 25 schools and worked w/a college counselor! I told her she should send them “no” now to open a spot for someone else.
