My daughter’s status on her SDSU portal changed yesterday to Accepted. So check those portals! OOS student, Journalism major.
Same here!! OOS and journalism
Any IN-STATE business majors heard anything yet. Happy for these OOS students, but feeling very frustrated with how unvalued CA In-State students appear to be.
DS(In state) said no portal changes. He is business major.
His friend from same high school admitted for computer science back in december.
Not specifically targeting you with my post but this discussion comes up every year regarding In-state students not being admitted or favored over Non-residents not only for the Cal states but also the UC’s. Just putting out some statistical data for all CC’ers.
There are only a few CSU campuses where the majority of Non-residents even apply which happen to be the most popular and impacted campuses like SDSU, Cal Poly SLO, CSU Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, CSU Fullerton and San Jose State.
SDSU and Cal Poly SLO had the most Non-resident applications for 2024. SDSU had 8662 applicants and Cal Poly SLO had 7447, followed by CSU Long Beach at 4164 and then it drops down to 2877 for Cal Poly Pomona, 2606 for San Jose and 2508 for Fullerton etc… It seems to reason that there would be a higher Admit/Enrollment rate for Non-residents at these 2 campuses.
For the CSU system in 2024, 29,192 Non-residents applied to the Cal States and 55.8% of those applicants applied to SDSU and Cal Poly SLO.
Specifically for SDSU in 2024, they received 81,847 CA resident applications and for Non-residents it was almost 1/10th amount at 8662. Enrolled First Time Freshman numbers show 77.7% are California Residents and 22% OOS and 0.3% International.
For the CSU University wide system, Non-residents only make up about 6% of enrolled First Time Freshman while 94% are California Residents and most Non-residents are concentrated on a few CSU campuses. I think the CSU system is meeting their goals for California residents. You cannot fault SDSU for being a popular school with applicants.
A lot of interesting data on this link: Data Dashboards | CSU
Oh I get that. My issue is with how they handle decisions. I wish they’d let In state students know before out of state students if they are going to stagger-like many of the out of state public’s my son has applied to. But, they can do what they want and then we can decide how to feel about the school many kids in state and out of state will choose it. Good for them.
This is a total long-shot, but I thought it was worth asking to see if anyone has any insight. My son is interested in a career in the sports industry. He’s gotten into several sports management/sports communication programs. Unfortunately, SDSU does not have a specific sports management major, so he applied and was accepted into the marketing major. I noticed that they have a sports management MBA degree. Does anyone know if the undergrads have any opportunities to take advantages of classes in the MBA program or maybe a chance for an accelerated MBA. Trying to make the decision between SDSU which he really loves for many reasons and other schools that have a specific major he’s interested in. (please refrain from telling me how useless a sports management degree is )
I would inquire about your question here: smbainfo@sdsu.edu
I’m not an expert but I will say that if he loves SDSU there should be lots of opportunities to work for/with the athletic department there, as well as access to Padres, etc. in order to get work experience in the field. For example, my nieces go to SDSU and both have had paid jobs for athletics (one in communications and one in physical therapy). Most colleges have robust volunteer roles for sports teams as well. I know my son has been able to see sports “management” first hand as a journalism major at his current college. He writes about sports for the school paper and has had access to coaches for interviews, etc. All of this is to say that you don’t need a specific sports management program to gain the knowledge and skills needed for that career.
Thank you for that reply, really appreciate the perspective. I think his heart is at SDSU, I’ve just been concerned that it doesn’t have the “right” major, but I appreciate your input that it might not completely matter.
How do you know if honors courses are UC approved if the student is OOS? Thank you!
OOS Honors classes are not UC/CSU approved, only AP/IB and UC/CSU Transferable DE/CC classes will be weighted. There is no UC approval system for OOS Honors designated courses only for in-state HS’s.
Hello! Does SDSU send you all newsletters, e-blasts, updates? We haven’t heard a word since DD submitted her app!
SDSU posts frequently on Instagram if your student follows SDSU admissions.
Is SDSU admissions purely a stats thing? M S25 was accepted in Dec during the first wave but he told me that a couple of his friends that have better stats (slightly higher weighted GPA and course rigor) are still waiting? I thought it might be EC or essays but I think he told me they didn’t require an essay? We were hoping that early acceptances to some of his schools (SDSU, SCU, UCSC, CSULB) would indicate an overall stronger application for the remainder his decisions…
SDSU admission is based on many factors. Weighted CSU GPA is the largest factor, but they also consider amount of A-G courses above and beyond the minimum, preparation towards intended major (courses and GPA), Intended major, HS course rigor, First generation and local admission area status. There are no Essays and EC’s are not considered.
Yes, it is mainly Stats based but the other admission factors also contribute to the overall application review and different majors will have different thresholds for admission. You cannot compare different applicants unless they specifically take the same classes, have the same grades and are applying to the exact same majors.
All colleges will admit based on their specific application review criteria and all review applicants independently of each other so you cannot make any assumptions based on where an applicant is admitted or not admitted and how they will fare with other schools.
thanks! trying to read into this (for the UC’s and his other schools) but I guess the only thing that the only conclusions that can be drawn is that he was good enough for those schools.
Is it actually confirmed that early admits (UCSC, CSULB, SDSU) represents the stronger applicants or is more on the random side?
Usually the early admits are the “stronger” applicants but that really depends upon what each school considers as a “strong/competitive” applicant. CSU’s have much different review criteria than UC’s and Private universities. Local admission area status is very important for Cal state admissions which is not a consideration for the UC’s and Privates.
Son just got admit to nursing via email link to a cool “personalized” video
Congrats!! SDSU has the best acceptance videos! My oldest received hers for Fall 2022 and now waiting for my current HS senior on SDSU and Cal Poly SLO. The nursing program at SDSU is top notch! Congrats!!
