This Is Us. Anyone watching?

Yes, I think we may not be done with Sophie.

Please! I like Sophie! Don’t inflict Kevin on her again! She’s 38 or 39 at this point. She’s spent at least 25 years on Kevin, and it would be hard to argue that she got anything out of it besides being sadder but wiser.

It’s not that I hate Kevin or anything. He’s a big, great-looking, often-sweet baby. I just wouldn’t wish him on anyone I wanted to see happy. (And, yes, I am getting bored watching him. The writer-gods have written his character into a dead end.)

I’m definitely in Beth’s camp on this one. Randall is way too self absorbed even in light of all the credit given to him for help keeping all trains running on time.
Zoe and Kevin just aren’t interesting. I don’t see Kevin and Zoe ending up together.
Now Toby and Kate, that’s the love story. These 2 seem so genuine in their emotions. They each wear their heart on their sleeve. Who’s playing baby Jack Pearson? Is it a doll?
Love, love love Kate and Toby. Through it all, they persevere as a team. Love this couple.

I was crying when Toby took that baby in his arms.

Kevin you know you want kids!!! Zoe describes herself being very much what people complain Kevin to be - self-absorbed. I don’t see her lasting past this season.

It pains me to see Randall and Beth at odds. Two things wrong with this situation: 1. He/They should have never thought this 2 hour commute each way would be ok for life or sanity. 2. Beth knew all this, knew this would be the drill when Randall won, and yet isn’t willing it seems to be the bigger guy for the time being in terms of being the present one. It’s not like he is asking to ONLY work.

I’m worried Randall is going to have an anxiety crash again.

I am still in Beth’s corner. She did not want him to finish the race and went against herself when she agreed. She was also lost emotionally and looking for direction. Of course most of us would put our plans on hold for our kids/husband. But is that the healthiest thing to do? They need a third person mediator to sort this out. Even if they get through this now there will be residual resentments that ALWAYS pop up later.

Agree about Toby and Kate! And Zoe.

I’m actually in Randall’s camp. In the beginning, he asked Beth about running for City Council and she agreed. It was only after poll numbers went south that she asked him to drop out and I can understand why he wouldn’t want to quit at that point. So, really, I think she needs to support him since she initially agreed he should run. How long is his term? Two years? Maybe longer but, whatever it is, she should figure out how to teach dance in a limited fashion that works for the family’s schedule. When his term is over, they should be in agreement that her wishes come first. And, of course Randall shouldn’t have left that message. Still, spouses lose it sometimes. They say things they shouldn’t. How they went from pretty much perfect to where they are now seems tough to buy into…although there have been two job losses, a loss of a father and an adoption so…

Agree that Zoe and Kevin are uninteresting. Kate and Toby had the best scenes of the episode and their baby seemed so real to me. So tiny. I really, really hope the baby makes it and is healthy.

It’s not like Randall isn’t doing his part. He isn’t saying ā€œI’m a city councilman, I need you to take care of the rest of the family needsā€. As he said, ā€œburning the candle at both endsā€. I think that yes for those 2 years anyway, they both need to burn that candle at times. They are both overachievers - would it be in character for either of them to ā€œdrop outā€ of a personal effort? I say no.

I was thinking about the show in the shower this morning (of course, right?!) Sophie has so been a part of Kevin’s life - in and out perhaps - but always coming back ā€œinā€, that I think when Kevin realized that Sophie now may be out for good - in terms of a romantic relationship - he went back and told Zoe he chose her over kids - and my theory is that he did that because he doesn’t want to be alone. He really is at a low point (yes, he’s been lower) and as charming and famous as he is, that doesn’t buy personal confidence or happiness.

Does anyone have any more insight into the story line about Rebecca and Jack and the school dance? Jack was certainly ā€œoffā€ in these scenes - uncomfortable, not really present, etc. What should we be reading into this?? I feel like I should have learned something through these scenes - but I’m not sure what it is.

And for my weekly record, I still LOVE this show.

I still like the show, but I was pretty bored by this week’s episode. Just wasn’t feeling it.

There is a guy working on the sewer line outside my house who looks exactly like Toby. I want to ask if I can take his picture, but would that seem weird?

Edit…I got a picture of him. Now I have to figure out how to post it. He said no one has told him that and he has even watched the show. Wow! His mouth is closed in my picture, so no ā€œToby teethā€.

^yes. But why not .? He will probably love it ?ā€ā™€ļø

It was so funny to see Toby playing an assassin in ā€œThe Americans!ā€ And with a German accent.

Maybe one of the points of the dance was to show that Randall has a proclivity to be focused on the ā€œjobā€ and tends to not see others’ (his date’s, his wife’s) emotions or be empathetic to them.

I was wondering if Zoe was trying to push Kevin away by hitting him with the no kids thing now. Give herself an out. I agree she is boring. Kevin is too, to some extent. It’s much more fun when Kevin’s storylines are the uplifting part of the show.

Interestingly, the scene mentioned upthread with Randall and his daughter and ā€œare you ready to see her?ā€ I had the distinct impression that it was Beth they were speaking of, and that Randall and Beth were divorced at the time. Not sure where I got that, now, but ever since, I’ve been waiting for them to split! As for their issues, I can see both sides. Randall is definitely going off in an uncharacteristic way at times. And Beth is also going overboard with suddenly diving into this dream with both feet regardless of the schedule. But I saw her point about her cocktail hour. That situation (cocktail hour vs business dinner) just seemed like an impasse, to me. And she DID ask Randall not to run, at some point.

I also figured that Rebecca was dealing with her own issues about ā€œleavingā€ the room when Jack died. While it was ridiculous having them all there, waiting, it made for an interesting scene. I kind of like that the entire family came off as unlikeable in their treatment of Miguel and the friend. It makes them more interesting.

I believe it is a SAG rule that you can’t use babies younger than a certain age, and I think baby Jack is a doll. I just can’t imagine the logistics and safety of filming a real baby that tiny and fragile, and filming in a real NICU.

Oh, we need to see that photo @toledo!

Doesn’t this look a little like him? If I could have gotten him to smile, you’d see more of a resemblance.

It absolutely does resemble him, I bet even more so when he smiled, because you said that’s when you really see it.

@conmama - Totally looks like Toby!

I think Kevin quit worrying about actually choosing between Zoe or kids because Sophie told him ā€œKevin, just decide what you want. You always get what you want.ā€ So he’s decided he wants Zoe—and kids. Eventually, he’ll get the kids he wants with Zoe.

Yes, it resembles Toby! LOL that you took the photo! I love that you did that!

I’m an outlier I guess because I like Zoe. Maybe it’s because she’s so beautiful and I love her wardrobe :).

But she seems very sure of herself, loves to travel and see the world, and knows herself. I’m not sure if she is a good permanent match for Kevin but I like her as a character.

Now the Randall-as-a-councilman story is so totally unrealistic to anyone who lives near Philadelphia. They have yet to show Randall putting thirteen family members on his payroll, getting kickbacks from contractors, and selectively following up on licenses and inspections issues. That’s what makes it unrealistic

That’s true! If Randall were a real Philadelphia city councilperson, Beth would be on his payroll twice!
