I recall Rizzo. But I was a kid then did I get the name right?
You absolutely did! Quite a character
@surfcity Quite a character is an understatement!
I saw previews on Bethās Twitter (not a spoiler) that tonight we will see the history of Beth and Randallās relationship including their wedding (the pics I saw - wow are they a good looking couple!!) and where the rhythm went off. Looking forward to it.
WOW
Tonight was good.
Iām definitely Team Randall tonight. Yes, Randall is a lot to handle, but if Beth gave up her dreams to take on Randallās then she did that. If she really wanted to dance before this, she would have done it. She was all wrapped up and preoccupied with her own past baggage around dancing. Donāt blame Randall. Theyāre both a lot to handle. During previews looks like Rebecca gets into a MVA. Sheās probably the one in the hospital they are all going to see. Sounds like the season cliff hanger, though I bet sheāll be fine by next season.
One of the ways this show has been innovative is that it doesnāt matter whether Rebeccaās fine or not by next season. Sheāll still be there at 25, at 30, at 45 . . . . (I do notice, however, that Milo Ventimiglia has been much less present in the show this spring, except for the Vietnam sequences.)
I enjoyed the Randall-Beth episode far more than I expected. Largely because the dispute in the present, which is really ugly, only got about five minutes of air time. I am pretty furious at the writers for not dealing realistically with any of what the characters are going through in the showās present. I am sympathetic with the positions of both characters, but neither is being remotely constructive about dealing with their needs and their childrenās needs. And for a problem that is largely driven by the childrenās needs, the children have been left out of the frame almost entirely.
Just my opinion but Beth and Randall is truly a love story, but they also seem a little co-dependent as well. Randall especially made Beth his everything. Iāve been married for 29 years, but donāt feel I need to be married to be happy.
I thought Rebecca was driving the old station wagon in the preview of the accident? Maybe thatās why she starts dating Miguel (she needs his help after the accident).
Again, I didnāt get to see the previews!
I agree with @preppedparent in #1708. Randall and Beth are very co-dependent on each other.
I feel like Beth wants it all. Maybe Randall does too. She wants her independence, wants her freedom, wants her career, wants to get married on her terms, wants the diaper changed a certain way. And in many of those instances, Randall tries to meet her or fulfill her. He aināt perfect. But he gives her a lot of room for her whims too.
I think Beth feels like lots of women feel. The pressure to do it all. She wants the night alone so makes up the one night conference story. She lies about it. Randall finds her. They talk. They argue! Randall seems to forgive the lie but he is suppose to take all the blame/suffering because of the boys at home. (but she lied!!) He tells her to go and tries to act interested in how she will enjoy her evening at the hotel. She then feels obligated to just go home.
She does acknowledge that Randall can talk his way around everything and convince her of anything. Is that his fault? Is that a flaw that he tries to patch things up or meets halfway?
I sort of get her thoughts and feelings but I think besides the whole city councilman thingā¦Iām on his side.
I like the show and the ensemble acting. In the last episode I saw a couple of disconnects. Didnāt Randall attend Howard University? So why are he and Beth about the only AA at the college depicted on the last flash-back episode? The other disconnect. Serious dance schools hire trained dancers who have gone through rigorous dance programs in college and have danced professionally. It seems like Beth last danced when she was in middle or high school. Not realistic that she would be hired as a dance teacher. This marital struggle is not ringing true for me.
While Randall had hoped to go to Howard, after Jack died, he decided to stay close to home. I believe it is thought that he attended Carnegie Mellon.
Beth was wearing a Carnegie Mellon sweatshirt in the college scenes.
Yes, they live in Pittsburgh. After Jack died, Randall decided not to go away to college. There was a previous scene at freshman registration in the Island Girl episode in which Beth first writes Bethany on her nametag and then throws it away and makes a new one with just Beth. The registration table had a Carnegie Mellon logo on it.
Team Randall all the way, especially after this episode. Beth is coming off, both prior to their marriage and after, as self-absorbed and whiny.
This is a bit OT but is still a little bit about this last episode.
But why is there a narrative in movies, tv and even reality tv? That women should play hard to get and that men will keep coming back and begging you for another chance? Or that men who are great and wonderful are chasing even while being struck down? Ugh! Ugh! Ugh!
I get that itās all romantic and everything but itās very different that what Iāve experienced or what my kids have experienced. Why canāt Beth and Randall have a normal grown up relationship where they get along, Randall proposes and Beth says yes! Why does he have to keep proposing? Does it make him look romantic? Or an annoying creep? Or a loser who canāt move on?
I get that Beth thinks that sheās given herself up for Randallās career, but I suspect she doesnāt mind living in the big house with the fancy cars. Personally, donāt marry a venture capitalist if you want to have a 50/50 marriage. If you want a career, hire a nanny or aupair like most very successful 2 career families I know.
I also think that in marriage, both parties feel like they are the ones who have to compromise more.
I still like the show and Iām not complaining about the show per se because I know Randall chasing Beth is part of the story. I just wish writers, not just on this show, would portray a romance that was more than this.
And no way do I see Kevin with Zoe. I think heās in a bad place and both of his siblings are with partners now so he wants to be in a committed relationship. I donāt think these actors have great chemistry together and I think Zoe is not into propping Kevin up. Or even into Kevin that much. Maybe sheās too damaged.
@MaryBarbara58 she was definitely in the old car so that accident has to be a flashback.
I think Beth has struggled for a long time with who she is or wants to be. Randall is sort of an easy blame for this.
The wedding proposal thing was interesting. Not this time, not this time, but THIS time. (how cute that he happens to carry the ring around with him because the door on their apt doesnāt lock- very Randall like to do the āright thingā because thatās the circumstance").
I really hate that she brings up his mother in their argument. More than once through the relationship but also in the most recent scene after the dinner in their bedroom. Why do people do this?! (my H has done this with me and my mom and it annoys me to no end - my mother need not be in this arguement!)
@MaryBarbara58 - Rebecca reconnects with Miguel after Tess is born & Beth teaches her about Facebook. We saw this last season, I believe.
I keep going back and forth on whether Iām on Team Beth or Team Randall. I can see both of their perspectives.
