This Is Us. Anyone watching?

I was so bothered by the whole “can’t spend ONE night without Rebecca in the house” thing. Good grief. I have never bought the Jack-is-golden mentality, and now they have to make Rebecca some kind of saint, too? Blech.

Also, I might be alone in saying that the Deja speech was so unrealistic that it bugged me.

I find Randall and Beth pitch perfect. Neither of them was going to end their marriage over this. They are too committed. But it doesn’t mean that they aren’t going to spar. I think moving to Philly was the best solution, though, yeah, the kids may suffer some. Could be just what Tess needs though.

Clearly, something has happened with Kate. I assumed that they divorced, and it never occurred to me that she was dead. Yikes.

Poor Miguel. Donde esta, micompadre? Maybe it’s because I’m also Hispanic, but I have such a soft spot for him. He’s tried with this family so often and just can’t win.

I agree that Deja’s speech was unrealistic but I loved it just the same. Hey, it’s a TV show!

Ahem, Don’t mind me. I’m just reaching behind myself for a pat on the back since I posted this on March 7: “I’m wondering if the solution to Randall and Beth’s competing dreams will be for the family to move to the district he represents (so absurd that he would live 90 minutes away). Without the three hour commute, they could work out a mutually agreeable schedule that would allow Beth to teach dance. Imagine all the story lines that could ensue as each family member adjusts to the move!”

It would sort of make sense for Kate to be killed off. I think it would be unrealistic to expect that a morbidly obese woman like Kate would still be just as big 15 years later. Since Chrissy Metz can’t slim down for future Kate scenes, maybe writers decided to have her die instead. I hope not, though – I really like Kate!!

As for Miguel, I believe he and Jack were more or less the same age and that Jack was a few years older than Rebecca. Isn’t it possible he could be dead at this point in the story?

I don’t think Kate has died - I think either they separated or maybe she just was traveling separate from Toby. I was just glad to see Toby looking normal and functional.

This is what I found myself doing last night since I am so invested in these characters - counting who was present and accounted for in that future scene - because that means that they are still alive years down the road!!!

I would like to assume that Kevin’s personal and work life is in a good place since that is apparently his house and it’s a nice one so he has remained successful in some way…or his partner is. Hopefully it means he beats his alcohol problem. BUT, we haven’t actually seen a physical Kevin in the future, right? Who knows.

So missing from the future in terms of main characters (those we haven’t seen in the flesh) - Annie, Kevin, Miguel - is that correct?

Also two more things:
Do we think the accident had anything to do with Rebecca’s later neurological issues??? Or was that just a side story.

Did anyone else notice that the nurse that young Kevin was lightly flirting with DID look so much like Sophie??

@abasket Yes, that nurse from the flashback scene looked so much like Sophie that I wondered for a minute if it was actually the same actress. I got the same sense of deja vu with Kevin’s son (shown walking through the house behind Randall) who mimicked the mannerisms of the actor who plays young Kevin. Casting on this show is amazing.

I’m figuring the closing was about 15 years in the future. Tess is supposed to be about 12 now, I think, and her grownup version looked to me to be late 20s. So if Rebecca is in her mid to late 60s in Season 3 (Jack would have been about 75 now, but he was supposed to be older than Rebecca), then she’d be 80-ish in the scene in the hospital bed, and dementia would make sense, as would Miguel having died already. Weren’t there references to a birthday party? Perhaps it’s Rebecca’s 80th?

Randall was so gray! Maybe Kevin was conveniently “out getting take out” because it would have been hard to realistically age him? Or his not being there leaves the mystery of who he wound up with. Sophie? Seems unlikely due to his son’s age but maybe they adopted? Or that boy is the youngest of the kids they have? His house was quite expansive so looks like Kevin ends up being successful.

Guessing that Kate and Toby have split up (hence Randall thanking him for coming), but amicably, as he was invited to Rebecca’s birthday.

No Annie in the future scene, but also no Deja. Don’t know where Kevin’s house is supposed to be (California?) so perhaps they were unable to travel to the party due to work, kids, etc.

^^ All good thoughts and possibilities. I had forgotten that Kevin was “out getting take out”.

I wonder if we don’t see Kate because of weight loss reasons (whether it’s to keep that a surprise, or because the actress legitimately needs to lose weight, I don’t know). They’re definitely teasing the possibility that she and Toby are not together, but that could just be to mess with us. Although it is suspicious that Toby had never been to Kevin’s house before. Also, they weren’t taking it for granted that Toby would come - if he was married to Kate, of course they’d come together, but if it was just his ex-MIL then that conversation makes more sense.

Also, someone spotted at least one Oscar on Kevin’s bookshelf! His, or his partner’s? Hmmmm

^^ An Oscar?! Interesting…good eye!

I think I’ll have to watch this episode again.

Yes, I’m sure there are lots of clues we’re missing!

I’m glad Beth is starting her own studio. I didn’t like the owner’s snarky comment about housewives.

I read a future sort of spoiler. But not really about any one character. Down below.

This scenario, with them all at Kevin’s house is the end of the series after 3 more seasons. The story won’t go beyond this point. It was a Q&A and I can’t find the interview to post now.

I knew that the show creator knew how the series would end right from the start.

OMG, I’m trying to figure all this out, even the comments at this end of the thread. I don’t feel certain I know what you guys are feeling…was this the series finale?

It felt so much like a wrap-up, with enough of the fuzzies for overall warmth, a peek into the completion of some storylines, with requisite corners left unturned, and destinies unrevealed. All of which is like waking up on a Tuesday in real life.

Was this the end?

It was the SEASON finale, not series. I think the series is set up to run 5 (or 6?) years. Like that was determined from the start.

I think that Milo and Mandy know how the series will end as well.

Series is set to run for 6 years total, so 3 more.

I am wondering why Kate wasn’t even mentioned in that last scene. If she and Toby were divorced, then she should still be coming. It is her birth family after all. It would be weird for Toby to come and not Kate. And if she were sick or just couldn’t make it then that should have been mentioned in the same way Kevin getting take out was mentioned.

I think there is something more than a divorce going on there. Either death or a weight loss issue like mentioned up thread.

It could be any number of things. And that’s exactly the point - to keep us guessing.

I watched it “On Demand” so I’m not going back just to watch the last scene (you can’t fast forward!), but I thought Toby said he had just gotten off the phone with his son, and that “they” would be there soon. Guess I just assumed that meant Jack and Kate…

^^I assumed it meant Jack and whomever Jack’s mate was.
