This Is Us. Anyone watching?

Show has always been about head fakes. Beginning of this week’s episode knowing Beth and Randall have been having a lot of problems, you see them getting coffee in different houses. Beth talks about finding the door at the escape room just when all heck was breaking loose with the girls. You are thinking she will say I know we can find a door here. But she says she doesn’t see a door. All making you think they are splitting. But then in a matter of minutes on the show, they find a door and figure it out (and the flash forward seems to confirm it worked).

I recall reading an interview with a director/writer when the big mystery was how Jack died. He basically admitted to head fakes but said there was nothing false that they where showing. So there wasn’t a head fake that they would give which they would need to totally contradict with what actually happened in the big reveal.

That is the shows MO. Its fun to speculate about what all of the missing pieces could be but likely anything we think today will prove not to be the actual outcome (or maybe it will). That’s the thing about head fakes. They can only work if at least sometimes they are real.

Isn’t that most shows MO? Most fiction? If I’m reading a book and can easily predict the ending (this happens plenty of times) I feel the writer hasn’t done their job keeping me interested and involved.

Using head fakes strikes me as the easiest and cheapest way to keep interest and involvement. Better and more effective ways to do that (and its not necessary to keep interest/involvement). But that wasn’t my point. Some people here appear to be upset/concerned Kate is dead, Kate/Toby divorced, Miquel is dead, etc. None of that has happened on the show at this point. And we have no info other than speculation that it will. Along the way the show will no doubt reveal more info making certain of those things appear more likely. But even then its not certain.

I wondered If Kate and Toby had had a falling out with Rebecca and this was a special visit.
If Rebecca was experiencing dementia she could have made a judgement error and put the baby at risk or worse.

Kevin house confused me. I should go back and look again but it was not well lit.
Then Randall was in a hallway that looked more like a lobby of a hotel. Maybe a very upscale care facility?

They referred to the place as “Kevin’s”. As Randall walked down the hall, he was having flashbacks of his mother in the hospital, years earlier, but I have noticed that some new homes look more like commercial buildings. I’m looking forward to the “future” scenes. We could see interesting things.

@oregon101 - I was thinking the same thing. I also wondered about Rebecca’s notebook at the hospital - maybe her memory was starting to go and that was a way to keep up appearances and remind herself of things she might forget. If Rebecca was hiding symptoms and put Jack at risk, that could drive a wedge between them.

I just read the Entertainment Q&A with Mandy Moore andvshe refers to her old age makeup as being 83 years old. She was born in 1950, so the future date we were seeing is 2033. The kids were born in 1980, so they are now 53.

Don’t know why I neeed to figure that out.

And if Kevin’s son is 10-12 years old, Sophie could possibly be his mother.

When Beth said they had a lot of equity in their house that they could use if they sold it I was glad she finally heard what I’ve been yelling at the tv for weeks. Very glad Kevin and Zoe finally split and I hope it lasts. Is the actress going on to other things? I really like her but just don’t think her character and Kevin the character are right for each other. I’ve seen lots of speculation about Zoe the mother or Sophie the mother of the kid running through Kevin’s house but I’m wondering if Kevin meets a kid somewhere who reminds him of himself as a child and needs a home and he adopts him as a single Dad. To live in that ginormous house. I think he also takes in Nicky and that’s why he’s there with Rebecca. I’m not sure if Miguel is dead of if he is the “they” who is coming with Jack, the son of Kate and Toby (I didn’t hear the name Jack for the kid running through the house). Kate and Toby are split and Miguel went to pick up Kate and Jack?

The interview in the Aftershow, and now I can’t remember if it was with the writer, director or who, but he said how carefully they arrange every element of the mysterious flash forward scenes in a way that is designed for people to be confused and discuss them endlessly and come up with every theory imaginable. So we are being played, but we love it.

I had the impression that Zoe, and the actress playing her, was leaving the show. I suppose she could come back but it sounded like “leaves the cast”.

Nicky watching over her was comforting. There was a scene this season forshadowing this when she told Nicky, it was time for them to have a talk. Glad to see him at her bedside. Glad he’s still in the picture. Rebecca having Alzheimer’s is fitting for this generation where so many are developing dementia if they live this long.

Yesterday I posted about young Randall in a music video. Here it is. He’s still adorable and still loves his mom.

^^^ Well, that video got me teary eyed this morning!

Does it only bother me that Beth and Randall seem to have only 3 bedrooms in that very large house?? (The girls shared a room when William. Then Randall slept on the couch when he and Beth were fighting.)

I thought he was sleeping in his councilman’s office.

Why no love for Zoe here by some?

Water tends to find its own level and both of the characters/actors are really good looking. Both characters are aware of the baggage they carry and growing ever more self-aware. (A great place to be , and a great parner to have!)

I love looking at - her mirth and joy, though we know it be rifled through with pain - and hearing the slight musical tone in her voice.

I think they make a certain kind of sense, even if there are some family tie bonds which have always made me think the story of Zoe and Kevin’s ‘Us’ might be reason for a little ‘Huh? Now let me get this straight’ head-scratching trying to understand the familial connections the first time.

I guess I find Zoe just a bit boring and their story boring. She is pretty though. But like everything, it’s just subjective to each of us.

^^I think that’s quite funny, conmama. Maybe her character has healed too much to pose an enigma? Interesting.

I think I can see how she comes ‘healed’ and on the other side of big drama, but I find this comment most interesting because her story of trauma and abuse I find to almost be an obligatory one for Black female characters in visual media.

Interesting. I can see her evincing a quiet principle of ‘no drama’ which may leave her feeling without nuance, or facets.

Will think about this more.

I liked Zoe more at the end . She seemed very aware, gracious at the end. I just didn’t see much chemistry at the beginning and their story just didn’t seem that well developed. Having kids or not is such a major decision. I liked that they discussed it but was surprised Kevin would give up that option so readily . Just didn’t seem enough connection there with them.

Is anyone watching Chrissy Metz on the award show tonight? She’s better than I anticipated. But I think she’s an actress who sings, not a singer.
