This is what I found on the TE website:
What is the dollar value of Tuition Exchange scholarships?
Scholarships cover full tuition, one-half tuition for a non-resident at a public institution, or a rate set by The Tuition Exchange. They do not include special fees, course overloads, or room and board charges. For 2023-2024, institutions that charge more than $41,000 are permitted to award less than their full tuition but not less than the set $41,000.
- Colleges can cover other expenses, such as housing, in their awards. Check the Search Member Schools page for details on which schools offer scholarships that include more than basic tuition.
- Some member schools reduce their scholarships by the amount of federal and state grants awarded, whether or not these awards are based on financial need.
- The Application/Certification Form that notifies you of your award should provide specific details. If youâre unsure, ask the school to clarify before you accept the scholarship.
Not sure if it really answers your question though.
I donât know but Iâd imagine itâs up to the individual school. In our familyâs case, we donât qualify for pell grants, but several schools stacked need-based aid on top of the TE offers. That got us to our FAFSA expected contribution for those schools.

We are CIC but for next year and I have had a really hard time finding anything on it. Iâd appreciate you sharing your experience.

I definitely will! I have looked at the TE site to try to glean info, but I have no idea if the percentages there correlate to CIC offers, since CIC HAS to do 3 per year, etc. I have searched all the past threads already and see very little on it, but lots on TE.
Just realized we can look up the application status for each school we applied to in the TE website under Application Status. Since my husband processed all the paperwork, it was comforting to see the expected schools listed and also see each schoolâs status with TE. Waiting is hard!!

D24 has her first app in (finally), and the strategy is 4 TE, 4 no-loan LAC, and hopefully there is one in the eight that both accepts and offers enough aid. Good luck everyone.

this is very useful info. Thanks.
Oh, I feel you thereâwe have twins going through the process this year, and while one has all his apps in, the other still has a few RDs outstanding (in fairness to him, all are pretty long applications with supplemental essays). I will be so glad when he presses the âsubmitâ button for the last time!

My kid applied to so many to increase the odds of TE. We thought it would be impossible to gain acceptance. Did anyone else go overboard with the applications in fear of not gaining acceptance to both the school and TE?

What do you consider overboard?
We ended up applying to 9 (8 EAâs and one RD). My D24 was going to do 10 but decided against the last one.
Yes, we applied to SO many schools. So many. But it can be such a crapshoot and the benefits longterm to not having loans or as many loans far outweighs the effort in adding more schools. Kiddo applied to 16 TE schools, plus a bunch of large state schools and then a little sprinkling of localish schools (3)

My kid is not high stats, so only applied to 4. However, I am also staff (so not a high wage employee) so our EFC/SAI is already pretty low. The worst case scenario is starting at our residential community college, which is also free for her graduation year (and bc of CIC weâve always planned on paying R&B, anyway.)
She looked at some schools that came off the list ânot even for free?/ Not even for freeâ that she felt sheâd prefer the CC over them.

Too many to count, I think around 20. Not all TE. We needed to chase merit and I have little knowledge of this process so we went in heavy so we could choose the best offer and hopefully score a TE offer. My niece is graduating next year so Iâm hopeful to use my knowledge gained for her since her parents are both not working and disabled.
My student has been granted 6 TE awards. Not from schools mentioned by anyone. I will state them all and when they were given after theyâve accepted one for future purposes. Iâm so nervous of TE staff monitoring this since itâs such a huge scholarship and I donât want to jeopardize it in any way for my student. Theyâre going to email all but 1 and say theyâre thankful and pass on the others next week to not hold up anyone else receiving them who is next in line. Theyâre still waiting on a decent amount.
We did target schools with higher acceptance rates thinking it would be impossible to score a TE offer after reading previous threads.

I donât think TE is monitoring this thread but I understand wanting to keep quiet for a bit. I think it is amazing you already have 6 TEâs in hand
That must feel like a little bit of relief anyway.
I think my daughter would kill me if she applied to 20. She was tired enough just doing the 9

She wanted to kill me! We had a deal of a pink drink from Starbucks with each TE award so thatâs her only consolation prize for the many apps hahaha.
That actually is not a bad payment. I think I would owe a whole lot more than that
I think it is wise to cast a wide net because TE can be unpredictable. S21 went through this and had several great TE offers, but some came from schools we thought were reach while other âsafety schoolsâ did not award it to him. We were glad that he applied to as many as he did.
This year, Twin A applied to many TE schools and has a wide range of reach, probable, and safety options (both for acceptance and for odds of getting TE); Twin B applied to fewer but has lower stats and also first choice is an in-state school that is equal to what we would spend on for a TE set rate college.

The Google sheet for the previous class has been super helpful. I thought we might be able to copy the tab from last year and make a tab for the class of 2028 in the same file. The running history of acceptances/denials and schools kids are applying to would be helpful for future parents/kids applying to college.

I am feeling a little jealous of those that are getting their ED decisions and saying peace out to CC. We are going to be around for a whole lot longer. Well, I am anyway
