It sounds like he got acceptance with a merit scholarship and then TE was awarded later at one college. This is how we’ve seen it done. Pitt and Saint Josephs both admitted with merit scholarships, and later TE displaced the merit (TE is full tuition at both)
We haven’t gotten any TE WITH acceptances but I think CWRU does it that way.
The second (which school?) may not have processed their TE applications yet. DD has admissions with merit at Duquesne, Suffolk, Marquette, but no decision on TE yet. Looking through past files/notes, I expect a Duquesne TE very soon, Suffolk “after Jan31”, Marquette in April.
Ok, good to know. I’ll keep my eye out for TE awards. I totally forgot that there is a third college that didn’t mention TE. I guess that’s the one she’s probably not going to attend. LOL. She’s still waiting on RD decisions, with a couple of TE schools in there. But honestly she has one really great option right now. I just wish she were as excited as I am!
Yeah, I know. I plan with a 30% success rate (I don’t know where I got this number - probably based on what others reported on CC). If you apply to 6-10 TE schools, 30% success rate would give you 2-3 options for your student. I don’t think Duquesne announced their TE decisions yet, so
Denied at Pitt as well. I was told they don’t keep a waitlist so not sure a letter would be helpful. Merit is not enough, so we are moving on to other options.
S23 applied as a music major so the academic then performance admissions were separate. No huge surprises with admissions for him. However, the TE being awarded at what ended up being the top choice on his list (that he refused to even truly consider due to cost), THAT was the acceptance that made me cry!
D25 has really fallen in love with a non TE school. I took her there just to see if the size was right for her because she had only visited schools with a much smaller or much larger acreage. In touring she wasn’t overwhelmed with student numbers but found out that the true walkability of the campus mattered to her most (she has short little legs). She really liked the under 200 acre campuses and felt her brother’s campus at Cuse at over 700 acres was too big. Ends up the 475 acres was just right for her. She may visit a campus or two where she got TE awards but I think it will be hard to sway her heart away. Lucky for us the non TE school is already coming in at 23k/yr total COA with fingers crossed she gets the scholarship she applied for which would end up at 19k/yr.
My kid received a TE from John Carroll. Last month he received an offer from CWRU. I guess Cleveland is good to us! His TE was rejected from American U.
With total cost over $70K the set rate of $43k still leaves a big bill - no stacking with $31k merit award. We might be in wait and see mode with other TE schools.
Just FYI, in case this info helps. Last year our D24 had not heard back from University of Tampa as of 3/10/24, and she had several offers so was getting to the point of making a decision. So she emailed the TE contact there. On 3/14/24, she received a response stating “We have already notified the few recipients of the Tuition Exchange Award, and I’m sorry to inform you that you did not receive the Tuition Exchange Award from The University of Tampa.
As a reminder, this is a highly competitive award at The University of Tampa. We received a high volume of applications, nearly 300, and had a very strong candidate pool for this award. The committee holistically reviews unweighted gpa, test scores if applicable, and number of AP/IB courses among other elements.”
How is everyone on here that is waiting for TE decisions answer the portal questions for the schools that ask if “you ACCEPT the admission, and intend to enroll”? Almost every one asks us that immediately upon admission decision (way before TE decision). They also want you to fill out housing applications and sometimes state that it’s first come first serve - yet some TE decisions won’t be until mid April. Also, some schools want you to select “yes I accept the merit scholarship/award xyz”. There is no other language about it being binding or really anything - they just ask for a yes/no - and if you don’t choose, sometimes you can’t get to an option to deposit. And some schools use deposit date as a first come first serve thing (for certain limited space majors - like our student). Looking for insight here - do you have to accept these things until you get all the TE decisions, then back out for anywhere that is not your final decision?
