My daughter was accepted last year EA and received TE. USC waited until the very last minute to make awards even though she was accepted in January. I was told by prior parents that if you got in, you usually get TE. Ultimately my daughter chose a school that gave her a full ride. USC is set rate and it was still quite cost prohibitive.
Thanks for the information. Can I ask, what was the set rate?
I think it is 43K right now.
I thought USC gave 80%. Was it the 43,000 instead?
Thanks for the update and your help (and the info in your other post)! I’ve read some of your previous year posts and of course analyzed (probably way over-analyzed) the spreadsheet data. The more data the better to make an informed decision! Unfortunately most of the smaller schools (Aviation schools) we were pursuing aren’t on there.
Not only is the TE data that is there now incomplete/incorrect - it is also critical to note that compounding the confusion is that it doesn’t specify import or export data. This will particularly mislead someone who is new to all of this. Surely it is export data (I think we can infer that), but, it needs to say “TE EZ-Application Export Information”, for example.
Now if only they will show IMPORT data - that’s like the ‘holy grail’ of information that seems to be not so forthcoming. While export data is a little useful - previous year’s import data would be 10X more useful and what most people are after. Especially since schools no longer need to balance imports/exports. That would have helped us tremendously. We ended up pursuing 3 or 4 schools on our son’s “TE list” this year that were last reported in the 10-40% range, only to find out that this year (and last year) they awarded less than 10% and in one case - 2%!? This would be critical to know as many people can save their time, effort, and resources - and pursue other schools where there is at least a ‘decent’ chance. I basically found the previously-posted % offered ranges to be off (and outdated) for most of the schools we were looking at. It seemed to be, in a couple cases, what they were awarding 4 or 5 years ago and it changed dramatically. We asked for previous year import data from each TE liaison and only were able to get it for a few of them.
Dogfish -
I have so many spreadsheets on college stuff - hence the name! The more data, IMO, the better. On TE data (# of apps, number accepted, number enrolled) some schools are truly excellent, and provide good granular TE data (even on stats of approved students). Most provide nothing at all. It’s so odd to me, given how big the scholarship is, that there’s so little data. This is why I made that original spreadsheet in 2023, as a way to at least allow parents to pool all their data in one place, along with their kid’s stats, so future parents/students could at least have some idea of what the chances of getting TE would be, at any given institution. I see at this point the spreadsheet has three years of data, which is really great. Still imperfect, but better than nothing/guessing.
The TE rep I spoke to said the new TE-EZ data tables on the websites for individual schools is import data. Which is great, since that’s what parents need to see. Unfortunately it’s not complete, so they’re going to take it down. As I noted earlier, in March 26 they’ll put up the compete import data for each school (for the 25/26 year), and it will be complete. That will be a big help for future students/parents.
I hear you on the guessing game. D23 applied to one place that was “below 10%” and it turned out they received 200+ apps and approved 1. Which is more like 0.5%, and makes applying to that institution irrational if the student doesn’t have perfect stats in everything. Another school we applied to was also “below 10%” and they approved no one. At the same time, “11 - 40%” is too big a range. 12% is very different from 40%. But anyway - they’re going to release that data in March, so people will now know to the percentage point for each school what the chances were in that previous year.
It seems to me that TE is honestly trying to do better. I’d guess they have very limited resources!
Since TE isn’t based on import/export balance anymore, is there a concern that fewer TE spots are available at universities that are currently experiencing financial hardships? With so much uncertainty about federal funding and the enrollment cliff, I am hearing about more and more hiring freezes and benefit cuts.
I am (im)patiently waiting to hear back from USC for my D28 who currently attends there. (She was accepted late in May after all of the TEs were awarded last year). They were very generous with my D20 and as you’ve read here, they seem to be generous to those who are admitted, so we took the risk in hopes she would be awarded this year.
For those of you waiting to hear from USC, we heard back last year on April 16th- here’s to hangin in there for 2+ more weeks!
USC in a hiring freeze and experiencing financial hardship
It’s a good question, and I’m not sure but it seems to me that even though the import-export balance requirement is not required anymore, it’s just not in the interests of any school to import much more than they export (since imports are costs), even if they are financially sound. The need to keep them aligned will be more the case at a school that is financially strapped, though.
I don’t know why they removed the balance requirement but I wonder if it was removed because some schools (many?) in TE were exporting more than they were importing, simply because the school itself wasn’t seen as that prestigious. So, for less prestigious schools, it was harder for them to stay in balance. So getting rid of the requirement took pressure off those institutions. But I’m just speculating.
I don’t think people realize how little most professors make. I am teaching one class this semester at a local university. I figure
I make 16 an hour when I account for planning, grading, emails, and class. I let the university know that I would not be returning after this semester. I wish you luck on your next step on your professional journey.
This is just one reason why we thought a non-TE school may be the way to go for my D25. My spouse (who is a professor and why we qualify for TE) does not make a substantial amount by any means. If my spouse decides to leave the job, (which is likely in the next 4 years) we’d lose the TE benefit and be stuck!
D25 committed to a non-TE school (Michigan State University) today! The school is much larger than she originally preferred, but she is starting to like the bigger size. It is a great school and not too far from home. She received nice scholarship and aid money, making it WAY more affordable for us. She will be declining her few TE offers tomorrow. Good luck everyone with the upcoming TE decisions and college choices!
Congratulations! Glad it’s affordable for you! I bet you both are glad the whole TE and college decision process is now behind you.
Is everyone sick and tired of waiting?! The two schools we are waiting TE responses from are my son’s top 2 choices (of course!) We submitted our TE application back in October and the waiting period has been crazy long. We are hoping we receive news from DePaul on Tuesday and soon from St Joes. Fingers crossed it’s good news!
Yes! We are waiting to hear from our last 2 (including DePaul) on Tuesday as well. I am ready to be done. And then who knows what happens with those waitlisted schools! My first son did come off of the waitlist (at the school he ended up at) last year, but that happened prior to the May 1 decision day.
So tired of waiting. Temple is the one left on my kid’s list. Good luck!
They have updated and it includes only number approved and number enrolled. It’s infuriating that some schools ‘do not have waitlists’ even when less than half enrolled out of offered TE. It still does not give us the number applied… If one school has a waitlist why is there a difference in offered and enrolled (I am referencing Syracuse). My D24 would have likely accepted her admission at 'Cuse last year if she was moved off the waitlist. According to their data 5 people who were offered TE didn’t enroll. What is the purpose of the waitlist?
EdProf - the TE rep I contacted said all those numbers will be taken down pretty soon, because they are not accurate. She said in March 26’ they will post them again, with full stats for the 25-26 application year. I wouldn’t put much credibility in anything up there right now (on those TE_EZ stats).
On Syracuse - in the FA 2023 class, they said they took 40 imports (that year, they said this in correspondence with some parents who were on the CC FA23 thread). So I’m skeptical that they approved 73 applicants. It also says the U of Florida approved 9, and 0 enrolled. I…don’t think so.
My advice - just ignore those numbers. Agree that full and accurate info would be greatly beneficial, but it looks like that’s not coming until March 26.
Exactly! We wouldn’t even remotely consider pursuing a 0.5% or even <5.0% school as the return for your time and resources is likely just not worth it - it simply wastes everybody’s time (save for if you have an “elite” - not just great, student).
I don’t know if that new data is import or export since it’s admittedly (by the TE) incorrect, but it certainly makes more sense to me if it were export data. It’s almost an order of magnitude off to be import data in some cases. Maybe I’m just skeptical (and cynical after this process) but I have doubts “they” will willingly provide import data next year (or ever) as they seem to really not want to show that data. Who is “they” anyway? The TE is not an LLC or other any type of corporation - is there a board of directors? If so, how do you get in contact with the board? I wonder why March 26th next year? That would likely be too late for most people for the 2026-2027 school year. It would help people from that point forward at least.
Yeah I would resist the temptation to pay any attention to those numbers as they can’t be correct for import data (for many schools that we’re familiar with… way off). I could almost believe for many of them that it’s export data.
