UC Berkeley Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeal Discussion

What post is everyone talking about in which a counselor said Cal won’t be taking any more waitlist admits? Is there a link to it?

This year is wild, I went through the painful months with my nephew together, he got off ucla waitlist. I didn’t know the waitlist is cruel punishment, my nephew opted in three waitlists which are triple punishment.

UCB is not the school for premed according to my older one and his friends. Some kids who planed on premed, but failed their first year, very difficult to maintain the high gpa at Cal.

Lurker here. This is terrible news if true.
I knew my chances off the waitlist were bad, but I feel more disheartened that they prioritized OOS/International students (again, if that’s true blah blah). I couldn’t afford any of my out of state options, and was hoping for a miracle with Berkeley. I guess I still am.

Maybe just for money, cal gave all wait listing spots to international &OOS…,

Yeah I know someone personally who got in for EECS. She was an international student and about 5 other students from her school got in. I feel like it makes sense since Berkeley needs the out of state funding.

Thank you! When she reads it, she says “any,” but the actual letter says “many.” So my understanding after watching that video is that there will STILL be some admits through the waitlist, just perhaps not as many as last year. For anyone on the waitlist, there STILL is hope, and so don’t despair. I feel that there WILL be some “melt” that will happen. For anyone who’s pre-med (my D24 is not pre-med), the general consensus from reading these posts is that Cal may be more competitive for pre-med than other UCs like UCSB. Therefore, some students may opt out of Cal for that reason. Also, I would imagine that reality sometimes sets in after submitting the SIR to Cal, and a student who is committed to Cal may take a spot somewhere else for a less competitive setting and for quality-of-life/balance purposes. My sister’s friend’s daughter just declined the offer from Cal and accepted a spot at USC. Cal is an amazing school, but the crime, homelessness, location, and competitive nature may be enough to sway many students away. The appeal of a school like UCSB, UCI, or UCSD may be quite alluring in which to spend 4 years (or more) of one’s life.

Well they prioritize in-state in regular with 2-3x the acceptance rate for OOS/International.

This is one example when choose college for premed :

So true meaning of life. My son got offers from Ivy schools and he had narrowed down to UCSB over Cal. But, still…

So depressing. 4.27 GPA and leadership ECs tossed down the drain. Feels like a waste of time just to start all over again at CC.

Fact. Prob more than 2-3 times

Check the distribution with Naviant, this time UCs have not just been test blind but also GPA blind.

UCB is GPA blind . A kid I met here got into UCB with 3.65 uwgpa, I think he’s likely D1 athelete.

CS is extremely competitive at UCB, my nephew got into CS with 4.65, his gpa might be on the lower end as my older son had much higher wgpa. So your 4.58 might not meet the cutoff line. CMU is more reputable than Berkeley, you can pay off the loan within 3 or 4 years.

You are right about CS being competitive. I just realized that UCB admitted just about 200 CS freshmen this year per this - UC Berkeley Fall 2024 Freshman Admit Rates | Ask Ms. Sun
If this is accurate then it sounds strange. I was also accepted at Georgia Tech and their first year CS class is 1200 this year!
Has UCB reduced the CS seats???

paging @tamagotchi to help explain

Yes, UCB has a very limited number of seats available for CS-intended students. The L&S high demand major policy started with Fall 2023 admits, but in practice, seats for CS-intended students were actually restricted in the two years before that, because the department had exceeded capacity and needed to reduce the number of students in the major. Here is a slide from John DeNero’s videos about this topic (that have since been made private).

At the time of this presentation, the plan was to admit about 100 first-year students to the CS major per year. So if they are admitting about 200 students in CS, they are actually admitting MORE students to this major than the original plan…
