UCLA Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeals Discussion

My guess is the first wave will be May 18th. They like to release on Saturdays and it seems like they wait for that May 15th deadline. Who knows though, it all seems so random.

If UCLA follows the same pattern for the last several years , only admits will be posted on a rolling basis. Once all spots are filled, then denials will be released and the waitlist will be closed.

Some other UC’s have within the last 2 years have started denying some waitlisted students early in the process and then short listing others for a possible acceptance later.

At this point, we’re so close to the deadline that they should be able to accurately predict their yield, especially since almost all packages have been sent out… don’t understand why they are prolonging it.

GrubyMom I have a question for you. I totally understand, if you are unable to answer. Do u think it’s possible that ucla could admit as many people from the waitlist as last year? Or in your opinion do you think last year could have been an outlier?

I really have no idea about how many waitlisted students will be admitted and not willing to make any predictions.

I think the problem with FAFSA this year is that all yield models based on prior years are useless. I don’t blame universities for being cautious (not that I like it).

Good point. With all the chaos/uncertainty this cycle, I would expect schools to maybe not pull from their WL’s until after their respective SIR dates. For all of us waiting for UC WL’s, that would be after 3/15.

I really wonder if this year will be better for waitlisted students, not just at UCLA but across all colleges, due to the FAFSA problems.

The different decision days should be a factor. I would think that schools that are popular #2 or #3 choices might have lower yield and pull more off the waitlist.

I just read that UGA is already done. One round of waitlist offers two days after decision day.

How does this compare to UGA’s “typical” waitlist round(s) in years past? If UGA typically does multiple waitlist rounds, then this years UGA waitlist is not a good sign overall for other students hoping to get off waitlists. Very generic comment, but…

The FAFSA disaster might be pushing people to more affordable state schools.

Ya, that’s what may happen with all the UC’s - namely, kids passing on more expensive oos options and staying in state at UC’s. That could make the WL movement less than normal at UC’s this year. We’ll see…

Good question. It turns out that it’s pretty typical for UGA.

I just looked at the UGA 2027 thread and someone posted a letter from UGA admissions. They needed to take about 230 students off their waitlist of 1,904. That tells me they rarely use the waitlist or need to go very deep.

I checked their CDS and the last three years the waitlists were 1904, 1543, and 1025. They offered to 739, 34, 277. They needed to offer 739 students to net 230, which is a pretty good yield.

I’m far from certain, but I think the strong majority of private schools that students would choose over UCLA use the CSS in addition to Fafsa. So many, like the Ivies, kept their deadline to accept offers of admission to May 1 as they were already able to send out their financial aid offers without the need for Fafsa.

I know some like Amherst and Williams still have a May 15 deadline, but they might already have their necessary financial aid offers out. My S24’s friend choose Amherst over UCLA in part because it would be cheaper than UCLA after the aid was offered. Same with another friend who will attend SC because it would be significantly cheaper than UCLA even though LA was her dream school when the process began.

Quick question. My school is making students order transcripts for waitlist colleges by May 10th. The grades will not be sent off until after they are finalized, around May 25th. Does this mean that UCLA will be able to view my final transcript, including my final senior year grades while I am still on the waitlist?

If you are not an enrolled student when the transcripts are sent then UCLA will not consider them. They stated no additional documentation other than the waitlist statement and updated grades are considered.

I recently got published in an article, after the deadline to submit the waitlist form. Do you think I could send this to my local admissions officer in order to increase my chances?

They will not accept any additional information other than the waitlist statement and grade update due April 15 so NO do not send.

I think it depends how good the packages were from the UCs. Some private schools have much more aid to offer, plus I think a majority of them had it sent out by May 1 since that was their deadline.
