I see people talking about essays for waitlist to UCSB … but UCSB specifically puts out a request to NOT send these in. Am I wrong on this? Thanks for your input
UCSB like many of the other UC’s have discontinued the waitlist essay and individuals still feel that if they send an LOCI or any other documentation, they will get admitted off the waitlist.
If you email admissions, they will specifically state do not send any other information.
From the UCSB website:
No, we do not use Letters of Continued Interest to select students from the waitlist. To express interest in the waitlist, you must simply opt in to the waitlist by the deadline (April 15 for freshmen and May 15 for transfers).

Mine was WL at 7! Good luck to your kid.
What’s your major? If not impacted, still lots of hopes.
@Gumbymom We heard the rumor, OOS applicants have advantage over In-State. When the UC will post the data for their waitlisted this year?
The waitlist data does not breakout the admits by residency. The data is published on the common dataset usually in February of the following year. The UC Counselor conference in September sometimes has preliminary waitlist numbers.
Regarding OOS admits off the waitlist. The UC’s are capped at 18% enrollment for both OOS and International students. If UCLA does not hit that enrollment target, then they can pull these groups off waitlist. The same can be said for in-state students if the enrollment target is lower than projected they will admit in-state students.
They will prioritize the waitlist admits based on their institutional priorities like all colleges that utilize their waitlists.
Well, Gumbymom says they don’t look at your major but it’s Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics.
If the major is in the College of L&S, major is not considered. Other Colleges will admit by major and major choice can make a difference.
Thank you
Hi. Does anyone know when UCLA waitlist decisions will start rolling in? When did it start last year?
Only admissions will know when they will start admitting off the waitlist.
In 2023, UCLA started admitting off the waitlist April 21 and 2022 they started on April 30. It will vary each year depending upon if they are meeting their enrollment target.
I was thinking today but now I think it might either be next Friday or after May 1st because there is a lot of uncertainty regarding enrollment this year. Since the FAFSA only just started to send to colleges, I would say give it a week but definitely after May 15th. That’s just my prediction though, nothing solid.
Oh ok. Thank you
Will rejections also be coming out? Or do they just send out waves of acceptances and if you never get an email then you are rejected. I just want to know where I’m going ![]()
UCLA will send out denials once they close the waitlist which was in July last year.
in your opinion, do u think that ucla waitlisted more kids than last year? Additionally, based on current trends, do u think ucla will adjust their admission to decrease their need for waitlisted students, or will they continue to rely on the waitlist like last year?
also, sorry one more question. Does admissions get annoyed with “unnecessary” email questions (like will it decrease chances of admission). I would like to email admissions and ask how many students were waitlisted this year, but I don’t want it to hurt my chances.
Emailing admissions about waitlist questions is fine but I am not sure they will reveal how many students they waitlisted. The # waitlisted is not as important is the # of students that opt into the waitlist. I really do not see what purpose the #’s would serve since no one knows their chances based on these numbers. Looking at past waitlist numbers, you can assume anywhere from 15-19K were waitlisted.
Regarding trends, it is to the school’s benefit for have a large pool of waitlisted applicants from which to pull as needed. I do not seen this trend changing anytime soon.
Do u think they will continue their trend from last year of admitting approximately 12,500 students? I know in years past it has been more like 13k or 14k.
