UCLA Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeals Discussion

Last year, a few students got off waitlist on April 28th. UC started to review WL applications way earier than SIR. If more admitted students declined offers than expected, they could admit the waitlisted right after April 15th, but reviewing the 13K to 16K waitlist applications takes time, my estimate is two weeks based RD admissions timeline.

I hope all of you get off waitlist soon.

would this be like two weeks from now possibly? Or two weeks after the May 15th comittment deadline for them to start releasing waves from the waitlist?

Couple weeks from now, a small group of waitlisted may get off WL, the first wave may be around mid May, my estimated timeline.

Good luck!

thanks! Is is possible that the waitlist acceptance rate could be even higher than last year? Like theoretically could more than 1400 kids get off like last year. Is that at all likely?

From what I’m hearing, a lot of students especially OOS are receiving little to no aid from UCLA. This could mean they will take more off the waitlist than in previous years as more people decline due to lack of aid.

OOS students have always received little to no financial aid from any of the UC’s and they do take that into account in the yield projections so it is expected that many OOS admits will not enroll.

Enrollment yield for OOS student was 33% last year compared to 59% for CA residents.

Is is true that overall enrollment is going to decrease because of the fasfa issues?

  • also, does this mean that they accept a much higher amount of OOS students, since many cannot entroll?

Regarding the FASFA issue and overall enrollment, that is something that is in flux so no way to know how this will impact admissions this year.

Other than UCLA and UCB, the OOS and International admit rates are higher for the rest of the UC”s than in-state admit rates due to many factors but this includes little to no financial aid for these group of students.

Here is the link which shows the 2023 admit rates for all the UC’s based on Residency and their yield numbers:

does this mean they might take few few oos students off of the waitlist?

Even admissions committee does not know…

If you´re OOS, your wgpa is above 25% of admitted students, and you submitted world class LOCI with straight As senior grades updates, your chance is decent.

My nephew is waitlisted at ucla and admitted to ucb, he decided to SIR a private school with higher rank. CA state funds are not available to OOS.

is he planning on staying on the ucla waitlist? thank you for responding to all of these questions btw, im new to all of this college stuff, so its very helpful to talk to someone who understands the process  I have a 4.96 gpa and pretty solid extracurriculars, so im really holding out hope.

The only thing that matters is yield compared with what UCLA predicted. If their yield for OOS was 33% last year, they probably accepted around 3x the amount of OOS students they want to enroll, give or take some depending on their predictions about how yield will change. UCLA has more info than we do about how the FAFSA issue might affect enrollment. Or they might have been super-conservative and intentionally put a lot of people in the waitlist knowing they would go to it. But it’s really impossible to know or to predict how well UCLA predicted its yield. We can say “a lot of OOS students won’t attend,” but as long as UCLA predicted that and already accepted more OOS to accommodate that, it won’t help the waitlist move.

I visited UCLA recently when I went to Celebrate UCI, so I prayed to the Bruin statue to get in.

Maybe that’ll boost my chances

You´re waitlited with 4.96 UC wgpa? Are you kidding me?.. You should be regents scholar…

My nephew didn´t decline the waitlist yet, he opted in with senior year grades, he will stay on waitlist until May 15th, just in case of some odds.

Oh, I am not sure if 4.96 is my UC weighted gpa. Its my weighted GPA at my highschool. I have straight As and take all AP and honors except for my art class (before I took AP Art senior year). I am not sure how to calculate/view my UC GPA.

You may get full ride at T30 private school with 4.96 wgpa. Are you admitted to any better schools than ucla?

UC GPA calculator: GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub

10-11th course grades from the a-g requirements. 1 Honors point for each semester of AP/IB or UC Transferable DE classes taken 10-11th grades. OOS HS Honors courses are not weighted.

The calculator will give you the Unweighted UC GPA, Weighted and Capped weighted.

UCLA focuses on Unweighted and Weighted.

I go to a huge highschool in a city with a class of roughly 670 students. Many apply to ucla every year and for the pasy many years, 2-3 kids have committed with im sure, many more acceptances. This is also a common theme for the 8-10 highschools in the area. However, this year there has been a massive drop with approximatley one accepted per school and most of them are going to IVS. Of the 10 people admitted, I believe only three are committing (two of which are engineering majors). I wonder if this is a reflection of them possibly accepting a lower amount to prevent overenrollment.

The UC’s are also capped at the number of enrolled OOS and International students to 18%.
