That is so interesting since their 22-23 Common Data Set shows that “Level of applicant’s interest” is “considered”. I wonder how they would assess the interest level if visits are not being tracked?
Interesting! I’m not sure how else you show interest. I felt bad for that family because obviously they made the trip out and everyone wants to do whatever they can to increase their chances of admission. But the person at the desk just wouldn’t check them in.
Lots of ways to show interest. Going to the school fairs or online. Signing the forms they have or writing a question /thank you note after. Emailing or meeting with a professor /department member. Using that in your essay. Applying EA. Yes it states it doesn’t increase your chances but nothing says I want to go there like applying EA. Going online and checking out the site with a log in. Theories of them tracking. Emailing the AO a question early in the process to find out something not on their website. Having admissions /AO set up to talk /email with a student of interest on campus. I could go on.
Many schools that consider demonstrated interest don’t track campus visits.
Not every kid has the means to make the trip and they don’t want to disadvantage kids because of their economic circumstances.
Is general assumption they will release EA decisions last Friday of January? Seems to be pattern. ( and yes I know a lot will be postponed, especially OOS).
Opening emails from the school and using those links to go to the website, attending virtual sessions, meeting the college rep if they come to the high school, meeting a college rep and following up from a college fair, meeting someone from the school to review portfolio at National Portfolio day (if applicable) are some ways to show interest.
Yes. Many will be postponed but maybe accepted in April. After EA and not accepted or denied then everyone and I mean everyone , is now RD. Lots of theories about it but that is the reality regardless when someone applies. Make sure your kids are loving their acceptances and have them look into them after the holidays. Many, many families seem to wait too long to start to look more deeply into schools. For Ross and some others you have to be accepted into your home school first (ie lsa) then you get put into the Ross pile to get accepted Jan - April once a month.
Enjoy the holidays

What a great thread. We do love Michigan, know some happy grads. A little big for my daughter, but. Anyways… thanks for the info. Visiting mid Jan for audition and to see if she can handle that Michigan winter
Wondering about whether to submit ACT score of 31 for LSA OOS. Student has a 4.0 UW with 12 AP classes, scores of 4s and 5s. The AP classes include Calc, APUSH, government, world history, both English classes, Spanish, Econ, etc.
The breakdown of scores is 33 English, 32 Reading, 32 Science and 27 math. She applied EA without submitting scores but considering submitting if she is postponed.
She did submit AP scores but not ACT or SAT.
Major is undecided but definitely not STEM or math.
Is this a good idea/bad idea?
The scores at her high school are lower than this (average SAT is 1050). She initially applied TO because it is not in range for Michigan but now reconsidering.
So an Sat of 1050 =20 Act. Your daughter got a 31. When the AO looks at this it will stand out but more importantly, she is compared to others in her school. So… What do students from your school get into Michigan with? Also does your school accept a good amount of students from your school? The 27 is an issue. Michigan’s LSA is an unweighted 3.9 with Act 31-34 for the class of 2022. What Math is she in now? Michigan likes kids starting in Calc 1 but some don’t.
This gets asked a lot so the process of selecting students for admission.
She took AP Calc AB in 11th and AP Stats in 12th.
Awesome… Michigan likes to look at the highest math /science rigor wise. Sounds like she took her math progression? AP Stats doesn’t show rigor even though it’s an AP class. But lots of kids like taking it. I would of submitted the scores initially in my opinion. Every kids situation is different. I wish your daughter the best.
Thanks. Yes I am now thinking she should’ve submitted but it’s too late unless she gets postponed.
By the way, how many EA apps get rejected instead of postponed? Is there data on this?
Not that I know of but it’s not a lot I would assume. If someone is just taking a chance and totally out of reach. On the common data set it’s easy to see what’s out of range and just taking a huge chance.
When applying to dual programs, I’ve heard people sometimes get into one and then deferred from one until later. D24 in range/higher end for ACT/GPA per CDS but audition not until January 25th. So I imagine they would probably defer for EA and then they decide if they like her audition? Appreciate your thoughts
SMTD at Michigan does NOT follow the EA schedule from what I know. They follow the RD schedule. It is different from others like Lsa etc.
Degree student to a U-M school or college that has Early Action, will that apply to my SMTD application?
No. While you will be considered for Early Action at the other school or college, your SMTD application will follow the Regular Decision timeline.
How important is math for the non stem kids? I’ve got a poli sci kid who hasn’t taken any calc, she is in AP stats this year. I know Wisconsin also prefers higher math so we are nervous
Michigan is a math centric school. They usually like kids starting at Calc 1 but not everyone does. I wouldn’t worry about it. Just see how it goes. BTW - their math is hard. Michigan is a very hard school for the best students… But ya don’t want it to be easy anyway…
