One problem is the common app makes it very easy to apply to many schools and the schools like it too because they get fees from it and also get to lower their acceptance rate, especially higher ranked schools (lower ranked schools don’t really get a lower acceptance rate, they might actually suffer from a lower yield rate). I know my daughter applied to a few that aren’t realistic. Currently waiting on scholarship offers, including UTK, before deciding.

Don’t want to spread false information, but my sister was admitted into UTK, and I told her to do the admitted tours thing. In the email, it said the same thing for me that it said for her when I did the admitted tours hack. So hopefully that means I’m getting it. I guess we’ll see!

To all the families who are interacting in this group. Firstly, I am so privileged to be part of a group of parents and kids who care so much about their future and admissions. I sincerely hope that all of this discussion and heartache does not go to waste and all of us get admissions for our kids to UTK. I would also recommend that once the decisions are out and folks do consider going to UTK, it would be awesome if the group can come together attending the admitted students tour at UTK. It would be amazing to meet all of your families in person. GOOD LUCK to all!

When i applied at UTK for Graduate studies and i was an international student from India. I studied Robotics. AT that time the West cost colleges and Pennsylvania , NY , NJ colleges were up there and UTK was lower. I still chose UTK even after getting a full ride from UTK, Clemson, UK and UPENN because i got a lot of feedback that the rankings did not matter. At the end of the day what school makes you happy and enjoy your college days both academically and emotionally matters. I loved the Southern Hospitality and would not trade UTK for any higher ranked college.

I feel like this would be the perfect group/situation to do a release date type pool. I’m going with notification today of when release date is at 2pm and release date of Monday at 7pm.
Now the portal shows campus tours. This was blank yesterday. Anyone else?

I agree…but rankings do matter–even if they are a perception. Employers are influenced and people generally think of you differently–i dont like it–but that is our society in sports, athletics, etc.

Campus tours has appeared on ours also. Btw I checked and last year’s forum shows that the Admissions Office sent social media posts on Feb. 17 announcing the decision release at February 21 , 7pm… so 4-day heads up.

I grew up in a go-to-an-Ivy-family, and went to work in an industry where prestigious degrees are looked for. While applying this child to private kindergarten in Manhattan (then 45k/yr) I read Daniel Golden’s “The Price of Admission” and I started to change my mind. When I went off to college all the private schools were about the same price, @20k/yr, and most publics about half that. Student loans were a rarity. You went to the best school you got into, and employers knew that. Now that pricing differs wildly, the smartest kids are often going to lesser rep schools b/c they get a free ride. It’s the smart play.
All that to say…how does anyone value a degree anymore? My industry has off-shored much of the workforce, and big $ jobs are held by well qualified folks raised abroad - factors that didn’t exist at all in my dad’s time, and was uncommon when I graduated. With a handful of exceptions, the prestigious college name - I think - buys you far less than that college wants you to think.
And that’s your morning distraction from the UTK portal astrology, back door hacks, spreadsheets, and betting pools! Good luck to everyone (put me down for Tuesday at 7pm).

Great points–it is a tough call–in my field–healthcare research–degree and training and reputation of college and post-grad work is important–but i know in some fields where off-shoring is big, it may differ. In the end, i think you can get a great education in a lot of places–its what is the best overall fit for the price.
