We just arrived in Harrisonburg. Hoping my son likes it. It was very tough to get him off of UTK in 24 hours so that he was properly focused on making an assessment of JMU. Good luck to you too.
I got into UIUC!!! Definitely cheered me up after the waitlist yesterday. Good luck to anyone still waiting on decisions
My DS was an applicant last yr and the drop in acceptance rate was shocking then tooâŠ
JMU - just missed UVA - is a great school. Beautiful campus, really nice and smart kids -and a tough admit this year. A lot of broken hearts this year for rejected VA students.
Great choice to have. In fall itâs crazy beautiful.
its a fun areaâhave a good time. Weâre hoping to make it there tomorrow too
Sending your boy positive vibes and you too mama - heâs got you - thatâs what he needs, not UTK
waitlisted. accepted offer for waitlist and showed interest in study abroad option.
There is a list of competitive scholarships on the web site, I believe those are for students admitted to honors but Iâd have to look back to confirm.
Thatâs what I chose too, are you considering Verto?
OOS daughter will not be pursuing the pathways program. In our opinion it makes no sense to offer someone from OOS a community college transfer option that provides no housing, etcâŠThis is something our daughter could do in state for practically nothing and get directly into colleges more highly ranked than UTK. Good luck to all those who were accepted if this is the place for you! Certainly the revenue generated from so many applicants will get put to good use. After being part of the SRAR issue, getting deferred, having the crazy portal changes and getting this offer, weâre actually relieved to close this door. Weâre committed to a college that loved our daughter from the start. Go Dukes!
I did not think what you said about the SRAR glitch was offensive. But I do find it demeaning to those students that this is their #1 choice (and fit the stats that have been posted in previous years), when others repeatedly announce that UTK was their âsafety schoolâ and they cannot fathom why they were deferred and/or waitlisted. That this is their last school they are awaiting a decision on, after getting accepted at their many other âbetterâ schools, and probably wouldnât attend here anyway. To the students who have been denied at those other schools and only accepted at 1 or 2 so far, and UTK is their top choice, it can be a kick in the gut to hear about âsafety schoolâ applicants scratching their heads about the results.
UTK is a great school and no admissions process is perfect. Instead of constantly reminding us that this is your sonâs safety school why not just move on and comment on the schools your son is excited to attend?
Itâs a problem because posters regularly takes backhanded digs at the school and other users without showing a hint of responsibility or compassion⊠Itâs made worse by over-estimating their studentâs statistics in calling UTK a safety when it never was. They bring down others to make themselves feel better.
Exactly. And this isnât unique to the UTK board. I understand parents venting about the admissions process because itâs unpredictable and frustrating for all of us. But make your point and move on. No need to make snarky comments about every school that rejects your child.
Reminder that CC is supposed to be a friendly and welcoming community, and not a debate society. If there is a problem with a post, flag it for moderation. Do not continue the back and forth. Thank you for understanding.
I mean yeahâŠitâs just a lot more expensive and my merit scholarship would disappear if I was to get admitted, so I would consider it but fall is ideal.

4.38 W, 3.87 UW

3 year Varsity Tennis, Captain, 4A (highest class) dual team state champion in '23, West Regional champion '22
Worked in retail last 2 summers, plenty of community service hours teaching tennis to children w/ disabilities
Deferred ED at South Carolina, Clemson, UGA, accepted ED at UTK, Auburn, Denied at UNC as a 5+ generation legacy and LARGE family donor to school over a period of decades (no longer, lmao). Ultimately accepted RD at USC but her 2nd choice major, WL at Clemson, WL at VT (applied RD only), waiting to hear from UGA although not under consideration - sheâs not a fan of the campus, which blows my mind considering I have a very soft spot in my heart for Athens, which I am certain lovetractor understands.
Daughter made her campus visit last weekend to UTK and absolutely loved it. Thank God we are done with this caca, it is ridiculous the undue stress and pain the Common App has caused these kids. Seemed like a good idea in theory, but alasâŠ
Good luck all & GO VOLS!
LOL. Thanks for understanding the reference. So Fun to be Happy on this Outerspace Ship. Athens is awesome. So sorry to hear about UNC. We have a family friend with a similar story. I heard they were absolutely brutal this year with OOS kids.
TNâs shift in admissions this year was massive and very interesting given the national changes and dynamics in play this year. They suddenly decided to admit a very high percentage of in state students (as they should) with lower qualifications and defer/deny/waitlist oos high qualifying students who have traditionally been accepted (I have plenty of examples from last year). This seems to be what other southern schools have done as well.
Btw, I am in favor of state schools prioritizing in state students and restricting oos admissions to a small percentage of high qualifying applicants. However not all state schools have a deep in state talent pool.
As a whole, it seems UTK struggles with the admissions process and leaves a lot to be desired in that regard compared to most other schools. And yes, we were accepted oos.
Are you concerned that lower stats in-state students will impact rigor/rating of UTK?
I agree that students should be able to attend their in-state schools. However, before accepting OOS application fees, state schools need to be transparent on their OOS % and ideally their differing reqâts. Their opacity adds application $ to the schoolâs pocket but causes a lot of grief and wasted energy for OOS applicants.
