Jumping right in- OOS D24 already applied EA and for HC. Anyone else?
Exact same here! D24 OOS… Looks like decisions aren’t until January?
Yep. Jan 15th
How important is it to include the common app personal statement? Do they read it if it isn’t required? My daughter’s application is strong but her essay isn’t the greatest. She is applying pre-business and did write the business-specific short essay.
I don’t have any insider information, but I think Utah is like most big state flagships in regard to admissions. They’re mostly interested in grades, rigor, and test scores, and the essays are pretty far down the list. IIRC 3 years ago they didn’t even look at the common app essay and we were able to use it for the honors program.
Unless her essay is absolute garbage, I’d include it.
Is anyone applying to the Honors College? Those essays are no joke! My kid is dragging her feet.
Yes. D24 is going to try and finish them today to include with the application. Otherwise she will get the application in now (as required for WUE) and send in the honors application later in the month.
Yes- mine did. Agreed, those prompts were more demanding than others we’ve seen (and had really expected). Being in the HC is pretty key for mine to attend the U.
I heard that last year it was a few days earlier than stated, but still- a long wait. Hopefully with the holidays it goes fast.
We know kids who got in last year and are attending that didn’t submit an essay. If her grades are in line or stronger than the average, I wouldn’t worry about submitting it.
Yes, my S23 didn’t submit a personal statement (used Common App) and got admitted with the WUE merit (3.7UW/3.9W/5 APs). It is critical to meet the Dec 1 deadline though.
He wasn’t interested in the Honors College as he was focused on physics and astronomy (didn’t attend as he got off the waitlist instate at UCSC for astrophysics).
D18 did attend Utah and loved it. She was in the Honors College, in the end it didn’t make a lot of difference as with her double degree (BFA+BS) she didn’t have the time for things like Praxis Labs and the extra Honors course requirements were more of an inconvenience than anything. But she was lucky enough to live in MHC for three of the four years.
Any insight on the housing application process? For a kid who prioritizes room type (single) over a particular building, what is the best strategy for that?
Housing changed last year so you didn’t have to apply quite so early for regular housing. But you still need to apply by the priority date and LLCs are really early on March 20 (and those are all the best rooms) or you won’t be guaranteed a room.
There aren’t many singles, MHC has some within the apartments, but that’s no longer available for freshmen. Not sure how many in Kahlert. Lassonde has pods which might be an option, but not many freshmen in there.
Can you apply to multiple LLCs in an effort to get a single?
My recollection is that you can list more than one, but you’ll only be assigned to one, and that happens before you pick the room.
For housing, make sure to meet the deadline and then it’s really just deal with what you get. You can prioritize what building/LLC you want but you may not get it. Then you get a window of time to try to find a spot - openings will appear. If he wants a single and a single is available he is welcome to take it. When my son had his window of time there was hardly anything left in the dorms other than upper campus triples. There were some doubles in Sage Point, but he decided he wanted a triple in Chapel Glen bc it was closer to the shuttles to get back and forth. It’s a strange and crazy system!
Got it. It does sound weird, but helpful to realize early on that there is no way to guarantee a particular room type. There are pros and cons to all of it! Thanks for the insight!
Hi All - Just jumping in to say hello. UU has been my son’s top choice for a year (OOS 2024 grad). We were there last February and he’s been obsessed - pushed to get all his stuff in by mid September. It’s just too bad it’s not rolling lol. He’s int the other 3 schools he applied to also, but his heart and soul is in SLC. Crossing my fingers for Jan 15!!!
Glad to be a part of the group. His my second and last going to college, so I’m not new to the rodeo. But new to the UU system!
OOS from whereabouts? We are in VT.
We’re “neighbors” - we’re in NH over near the Seacoast area.
