My son is a CS freshman who received a letter last year (when he was applying to college) for Engineering Scholars. From what I recall there was no financial benefit. The more frustrating thing is the way the letter was written, it sounded like applying was just a formality and that he essentially already secured the spot. He did apply but he did not wind up getting “accepted” into the program! He had already committed to the U - this had no bearing on his decision - but keep that in mind as you navigate this step. As an aside, my son absolutely loves the CS program and is thriving beyond all measure.
Thank you everyone for all the information!!! My OOS DS is dropping Utah for CS. Good luck to your students!!!
My son will be starting at the U this fall and we are trying to figure out housing. He didn’t get into any of the LLCs, so he is in the regular rush. Not sure how to find housing groups or if it’s fine to just pick a room and hope for the best. Any advice would be appreciated.
Just find a room during his reservation window and don’t worry about any of the rest of it. My son did not do a housing group - he just found a room when it was his time. Everything is fine.
My assumption is that pretty much the only groups will be instate kids who went to HS together. Random should be fine. I’d focus on which building and room type you prefer.
We still have not received our financial aid offer from Utah. Of 10 schools it is the only one we have heard nothing about it. Anyone else?
Are you out of state? The aid is merit-based, if you didn’t receive any details then you didn’t receive any. You can still take federal loans if you submitted FAFSA and get residency after the first year
oos
Every other school has given us a FAFSA “offer”. Usually a combo of loans, work study, and rarely, grants. Utah is the only school that STILL has not. Even though they’ve had our fafsa info for months. It was our son’s second choice school. But I guess it’s not in the contending anymore seeing as they seem to have forgotten him.
There’s no offer to give, since other than merit they don’t provide any financial aid (or work study) for OOS students. Merit was announced back in Feb. Like any other OOS student you could get residency after the first year through physical presence.
But you needed to do housing applications in March/April, which required SIRing and paying a deposit. If you didn’t do any of that then Utah assumes you aren’t attending. Why are you asking about all of this now in June, haven’t you registered somewhere else already?
Yes. He’s registered somewhere else. However, when we email or call Utah they say they are STILL working on the financial offer.
Obviously merit is already given out. This would be loans, work study, or possibly grants from FAFSA, even though it was turned in in January and Utah has had it returned for MONTHS. Just taking their SWEET time. Every other school has given their offers by now.
