University of Utah Early Action Fall 2024

My D was admitted as a pre-health major and to the HC. 4.0uw, approx 4.5w. No test scores, 10 AP/dual enrollment/honors classes. Not in a WUE state so waiting for Feb. 1st with :crossed_fingers:t3:

Has anyone not in the WUE heard anything yet? It’s now Feb 1

My daughter just heard- 10k a year. Her stats listed above.

Thanks! She/we are very excited and appreciative.

I assume if my daughter was granted the $10k academic scholarship that means she did not get the more valuable flagship or president’s scholarships?

Yes that’s correct. Note that all these scholarships are designed to encourage you to get residency after the first year. The scholarship falls from $10K to $5K, but paying instate tuition saves you over $20K. Just be prepared to spend the summer after freshman year in Utah (you can take classes at instate rates and have housing on campus or run orientation classes or just get a job). D spent every summer in SLC, even during COVID and really enjoyed herself.

Her notice says $10k renewable for 4 years for a total of $40k. (Either way it probably isn’t enough and she will be turning it down.)

Yes, if you remain OOS then it stays as $10K off tuition of $30K-$35K. But if you get residency then it converts to the instate version and you get $5K off tuition of ~$10K. So COA is about $40K year 1 and around $20K for subsequent years. That’s cheaper than the WUE rate over 4 years.

Traditionally most OOS students got residency, but now the WUE differential is small because the first year OOS premium is higher, so it’s not so common. But for non-WUE states staying for residency is the only sensible thing to do.

Sorry I misunderstood your post, thanks for that info!

Anyone’s kid decide on Utah (or anyplace else) yet? We submitted the enrollment deposit to the U and my D24 is thrilled.

So knucklehead S24 decided to apply to Utah after the 12/1 WUE and Merit deadline, and was just accepted. Besides slim to none, any chance the school still offers some leftover merit/scholarship money? I’m not hopeful, but told him to go ahead and apply just in case…

Just having a hard time paying full out of state tuition if he would’ve qualified otherwise by appling earlier. Utah is in his last 7, but naturally $'s will play a major impact on the final decision. Snowboarding and golf will have to be minor factors, thus being better for his GPA…

OOS (WA), 1460 SAT, 3.84 UW GPA (out of 4.0), 9 AP’s with scores of 5’s and 4’s, varsity baseball and golf. Intends to be CS/Neuroscience.

Thanks!!!

WUE for four years is nearly equivalent to OOS tuition + 3 x instate tuition. Residency does require you to live in Utah the first summer, but other than that they make it pretty straight forward.

Thanks but he missed the WUE deadline, so that’s out. I’m pretty sure there is no merit as he missed that as well. We’re out of state and not looking to get in-state UT residency. Just confirming there is no additional scholarship potential.

What kind of test scores and grades typically get merit at UU?

You misunderstand how residency for tuition purposes works in Utah. The student earns it on their own, by physical presence (all but 30 days in a 365 day period). The parents don’t do anything other than not listing the student as a dependent on their tax return at the end of 2024. The parents don’t have to move.

Any chance you are a military veteran? If so, children automatically get instate tuition.

WUE needs about 3.7UW and a few APs (at least that was enough for S23). Anything more needs close to 4.0UW and 7-8+ APs or full IB. It doesn’t appear SAT/ACT scores are considered in deciding how much merit to offer.

can you advise what the deposit is? I can’t seem to find that info anywhere.

It’s the Enrollment deposit which confirms your plan to attend the U. D24 just did that last night in order to fill out the LLC housing application. It’s possible she won’t choose the U in the end, but it’s a required step from what we have heard to fill out the LLC Application.

Did anyone else receive a mailed invite to the Engineering Scholars Program? The letter is dated 3/1, but postmarked 3/25 and received in the last day or so, which is a pet peeve of mine…

Sounds interesting, but my knucklehead OOS DS24, who’s interested in CS, applied AFTER the 12/1 WUE/Merit deadline, so without any other leftover merit/scholarship $'s, will likely be attending elsewhere.

If anyone has any firsthand info to share, I’d love to pass along to my son, in case he changes his mind about Utah. Thank you!!!
