Upcoming changes to the way we log in

@nicole20 The point is not that it costs money. The point is that it’s a needless change that was badly executed and only served to aggravate the forum’s users. What business wants to do that? And it’s not the first time it happened either.

I got the reset email, and all I still get is the “undefined index” message.

This is ridiculous. You need to provide step by step instructions on the banner or at least indicate ‘click here fir an explanation if you are a current user with problems logging in” and then provide instructions for what to do including if you no longer have access to an old email. And “ upcoming changes” when the change has already occurred is especially unhelpful.

This is terrible. My old email finally works, but my old password doesn’t work and it’s not allowing me to reset it. It keeps saying that I am not meeting the requirements.

I had to create a new account with a new name. I use to be twogirls.

I finally got in by:

  1. Using a different browser than my normal one (I had to use Chrome)
  2. "Having trouble logging in" link to reset password
  3. Changing password and logging in

…none of which I could do with my daily browser (Firefox). And I only had any clue what to do because i made a new account and came in here and read this thread.

On the bright side, I’m a web developer and today feel really good about my work, how I handle my clients and the level to which I test everything before deploying live. So there’s that.

I had to get a link to set new password sent. If old one doesn’t meet new standard of letter, number, symbol etc it doesn’t work. Finally working but heads up would have been nice. Like maybe an email to the address CC has on file?

Serious question: Does CC just want to be a content provider and not deal with the boards anymore? This is the second major disruption in the last year with minimal if any benefits. If that is the case, instead of slowly killing them just give us a 30 day notice and let someone post a link to a new version on boardhost. It would only take a couple hours to set up a still free and much more userfriendly version of this on boardhost. The issue is just getting everyone to migrate. I was on an industry specific board years ago where the host didn’t want to deal with it anymore so we just recreated it somewhere else.

Can you please send me a screenshot at sorini@collegeconfidential.com? Thanks!

I logged in on Safari, but I can’t access the forums or login page using Firefox at all. I get the following error:

Sounds like there may be a compatibility issue with Firefox, since I saw a couple other posts mentioning it.

I pretty much always use Firefox, because some other sites that are more important to me work best that way, so I won’t be here much if that doesn’t get fixed.

I hope it’s all up and running again soon!

Try quitting the browser and then going back in…paste in the link for the password reset. Also try a different browser…Chrome is working for me, but not Firefox.

I cant get to the trouble logging in option. This is crazy. I have tried everything i know how to do. I guess if this device logs me out, I’m SOL.

Everything going on here is such a bummer…and so unnecessary…its hard to imagine what is going on in the minds of the owners here.

In any case, I’m back in (I was part of the large group that used my facebook account as my 3rd party authentication login and that has evidently gone away) but I was very motivated (a student who I wanted to help) and most folks likely won’t try as hard as I did.

The whole thing is such a shame.

I use Firefox and did not have a problem logging in. I clicked on “sign-in” and then “trouble logging in” and a password reset email was sent to my email address. I was then able to reset my password to meet the new requirements that we were not told about.

Now I am able to sign in.

Though I agree that the timing of this change was not well-thought out. This is a critical time for those waiting for ED decisions to come out. Not sure what was so critical that this change could not have been implemented at a more suitable time.

@CCadmin_Sorin We know this is not your fault. Thank you for your help. I am sure you were just as out of the loop as the rest of us.

@CottonTales can you go directly to the lost password link? https://auth.collegeconfidential.com/module.php/hobsonsregister/lostPassword.php

@PurplePlum Earlier today CC was not recognizing our email addresses so no one could reset their password.

@TomSrOfBoston : Oh, yes I saw that. I just wanted to let you guys know that the new log in scenario will work on Firefox. I suspect it worked for me because I did not attempt to log-in/change my password earlier today. Something must have been fixed on CC’s end that enabled it to work on Firefox. I have no doubt that had I attempted to log in earlier, I would have experienced the same issues.

I think OHMomof2’s suggestion of using a different browser to reset password, etc. is a good one.

My problem was I couldn’t access the forum at all. It might be helpful to put instructions on clearing the cache/history and resetting the password instructions on the main CC page. That I could access. I got an error message every time I tried to access this forum.

The only way I got Sorin’s email was I was able to read posts via FB link.

Below is a list of what we have identified as possible steps to solve the issue:

  1. Clear the cache
  2. Reset the password (click on the "Trouble signing in?" link on the sign up page)
  3. Your new password must be 8-16 characters and contain at least 1 letter, 1 number and symbol

If you performed these actions and are still not being able to log in, please let me know so we can look into the case.

Hope this helps!

Well that was super frustrating. I was unable to login this morning. l had no idea this change was being made but luckily thought to check this forum and saw this thread. I emailed admin@collegeconfidential.com.

I didn’t yet have a reply but when I tried again this afternoon I was at least able to get the email with a link to reset my password after clicking the “Trouble logging in” link. However when I then attempted to reset my password I repeatedly got another error “Something went wrong while resetting a new password please try again.” And my new password did meet the new rules.

But I randomly just decided to try to login anyway and lo and behold the new password that it told me hadn’t been accepted was actually working.

I work in application development so I know how I would feel if I deployed a release like this. While I sympathize with the developers who are (I would hope) running around like chickens with their heads cut off trying to fix this, this is also a pretty egregious fail, both in terms of the change management aspect of deploying a change like this as well as the technical aspect of getting it to work.
