Upcoming changes to the way we log in

Well it finally worked. That was hours of my life I’ll never get back.

@CottonTales I’m sorry, but that made me LOL

I have yet to try. I’m so worried that when I reset my password it will fail, while also kicking me off my Mac and then I will have no way to get back in on any device! I think I may wait another day or two and hope the kinks are worked out b/f I try to reset my password and access via my iPad.

it is obvious today in the Parents Forum and Parent Cafe that people couldn’t log in. there was little activity on both forums today.

I just signed up a new account

Android chrome gives me this message, even after the clear cache / restart Chrome step: Notice: Undefined index: token in /var/www/cc_auth/src/Hobsons/MSSSO/Bundle/SimpleSamlBundle/Security/Firewall/SspListener.php on line 37

I can log in just fine in an Incognito tab, so I’m pretty sure it’s me, but I can’t figure out how to fix it.

Old expired auth tokens that may be causing errors could be stored in browser cookies. Try clearing cookies associated with the site. Using a different browser that you have never logged into here has the same effect. So does using a browser’s private or incognito mode.

14 1/2 - year member atomom here. Couldn’t log in. Don’t know what (likely defunct) email address was attached to my account. I always logged in with user name. I tried various email addresses and one of them worked to reset my password. However, I must’ve had a second account with a different user name. I don’t recognize the name “sdfn01,” but that’s how I was greeted in the “change your password” email. So when I logged in, my screen name and history is not “me.” How can I get my old name/account/identity/history back??
I feel like I just died.

I had a horrible time trying to get back in. I finally cleared the cache of my entire computer and was able to reset the password. I am now having to log back in to every site I visit. Somehow I missed the notification this was going to happen. Terrible timing with lots of ED results coming out this week!

I know a handful of members who can’t get in even though I passed on the instructions posted above. I passed on the contact email for Sorin - be prepared to be getting some emails!

Looks like this was a huge unforced error.

It appears that the login stuff was changed for password quality enforcement and reducing software problems due to allowing arbitrary characters in user names.

But it obvious was not tested tested for users with invalid passwords. Here are some apparent software quality problems:

  • When auth token expires, a login attempt results in being redirected to auth.collegeconfidential.com whose script just crashes with an error message. The user must then clear cookies (not cache) in the browser, or use a different browser, or use a browser in private or incognito mode.
  • Once able to get to the screen where it asks for a username (email address now) and password, the user will not be able to login.
  • If the user then tries to use the password reset mechanism, it failed with a message to send email to admin@collegeconfidential.com . This appears to have been fixed now.
  • The password quality rules limit passwords to 16 characters and exclude some characters, so better (longer) passwords are not allowed.

Really, the new software should have been coded better so that when the user logs in, s/he gets forced to the password change page to set a new valid password. Also, the announcements beforehand should have been put up in banners for weeks (and/or private messages sent to all users), with notice of the password quality requirements and encouraging users to change their passwords before the change (the password change page could have been set up to enforce the password quality requirements prior to the change in the login that required the conforming passwords).

So you have to delete the history for cc on your phone. I just went back one week. This will force you to the sign in page then either enter your new password you created on your computer or create a new password with the 8 things.

Pro hint: use your old password and add a! At the end.

I happily back logged in on my android phone. Just clearing the cache is not enough.

I am unable log in to cc on my laptop or iphone. I used my email address and my usual password and got an error message. If I try to reset the password after clicking the “trouble logging in” button, I also get an error message. I tried using an incognito window and had the same result.

Somehow I was able to get to “logged in status” by going to my browser history and clicking on a cc page that I had visited while logged in sometime previously.

Now that I am logged in, I went to try to change my password to fit the new requirements, but when I clicked the option to change password, I was returned to the log in page where every attempt to log in results in an error message.

A vicious circle.

Clear the cache And the history for CC on your computer. Then reenter your log in. Report back if it works. It worked on my phone and should on your computer.

I have two browsers on my laptop, Safari and Chrome. I just cleared the history and cookies on Safari and tried to log in and got the same error message. I then hit “trouble logging in” and after submitting my email address, I again got an error message instead of the link to reset the password.

On my iphone, I cleared the cache and history in Safari and got the same error messages as described above when trying to log in.

Back on my laptop, I am reluctant to clear the history for CC on Chrome. If I do that and try logging in and it doesn’t work, I will not be able to use my trick of logging in by clicking on an old page in the browser history.

I just cleared a week’s worth of cc history and no problems at all. Maybe go back a day or two before all this fun began and do that.

I have completely cleared the cc history on Safari to no avail. Had you already changed your password to fit the new requirements “before all the began” ? I had not changed it and wonder if that is the difference between your experience and mine.

No I did not. I did everything yesterday.

@CCadmin_Sorin , I was finally able to get in on my Windows laptop using Chrome after I deleted all CC cookies. However, last night when I tried to get on my Macbook using Chrome, I got that error page again. So I deleted my CC cookies there and tried logging on with my email and PW. This time it told me that I couldn’t log on because I wasn’t 13 years old! WTH?

This morning I tried logging on with my iPhone into the old CC app. It wouldn’t let me log in so I clicked the Trouble Logging In button and received the PW reset email. I reset it to my same PW, tried to log in again, and got the under 13 years old message again. I thought maybe I should have actually CHANGED the PW, so I requested another PW reset email and tried again with a new PW. Still got the under 13 years old error.

I don’t know how to correct my DOB in my profile so I guess the developers are going to have to fix that problem.

This is ridiculous.

I just tried to log in on my phone (iPhone using Safari) The message I got is “No account exists for that email address.”

This was minutes after I logged in with no trouble on my IPad using that same email address! And even though I always have the ‘remember me’ checked and also never log out, I was logged out anyway on my IPad. I’m also using Safari on my IPad, so these issues cannot be caused by which browsers one uses, imo.

It’s not important that I be able to get on CC on my phone. I just tried it to see what would happen. I didn’t even have any CC cookies on my phone to delete.

Apparently, whatever Program CC used to enact this change couldn’t possibly have been even tested.

I have been on several forums where password change was required and none caused any problems.

I am still only able to post here because I had been logged in on my desktop (which is going to restart with an update so I will lose this too). First of all, my current password meets all the requirements (a letter, a number and 8 or more characters) so if possible I would prefer not to have to change my password. BUT I can’t even get that far. Unlike others, I cannot even get to the system sending me a link to reset my password. When I choose that option I get ANOTHER error message. I have cleared my cache on my ipad and my phone. No luck. The app is completely unresponsive (I get a somewhat gobbledygook error message) but safari is no better.

Sorin- you said you sent me a link to reset the password but I did not get it. Its not in my email or spam folder. And every time I try to get to that page (to ask it to send me a an email), unlike others here, I get another “oops, an error occurred” and cannot get it to send me a link. That said, others are saying even if they do get the link, they get a message saying they are too young to sign on.

What do we do? I am sure my computer will soon restart with the updates and I will not be able to log in here at all. Please help.

No this is NOT fixed for me!
