UT Austin Class of 2025 — Regular Decision

@GigiMayf, do you know how many McCombs admits your school had in previous years? Does your school have Naviance (I’ve only read about this from other posts; no firsthand experience)? I guess a slight guess could come from previous admit rates at your school?

Yes, I think we do have Naviance. I hope my son knows how to navigate it. I didn’t realize that kind of data was available on that platform. If nothing else, his counselor should be able to tell. Thank you!

@Rosietwi I think you were asking me whether my daughter (accepted OOS Biology) applied EA or regular? She applied just prior to the Nov. 1 priority deadline. I believe on the website it said students applying before Nov. 1 would hear back earlier. I was very surprised she heard back this early though.

I don’t think my daughter even knows approximately how many kids in the class of 2020 from the huge public school she attends got accepted into UT. The hand full of kids she knows , got acceptances and enrolled in schools like Rice, USC, UChicago, etc. They do not use Naviance or any other system like that. That said, the school is brand new and her graduating class will be the first to attend all four years of the high school. So, there is no history there. I think they make the process opaque on purpose and somehow they are not answerable to anyone.

Two years ago my older ds school had at least 5 McCombs admits and at least 5 BHP admits from a graduating class of 94 kids. So I don’t think there’s a cap on how many they’d take from one school.

With those kinds of numbers, that must be a VERY good private school. UT takes a much larger percentage from those schools and the exclusive public schools. With our school just being a large suburban high school, I’m not sure what to expect. We’re lucky to get one kid in CHBP each year.

Do we think there is a chance we hear this week before the break or are there not gonna be any more releases before 2021?

@abcjlm def not this week or next, since it’s Christmas break and new year
January 8th and 15th are my bet if we compare to last year

Also I don’t get the general dissatisfaction from parents on the UT releases. Yes it’s stressful, but the most we can do is hope that we’re in the next “wave”. UT even gave us a deadline for priority applicants, feb 1. As a non-auto admit who’s been waiting for 2 months, yeah it’s stressful. But I also don’t see the reason why parents are disappointed with the process. If you have an issue, take it up wit UT itself, start a movement for a more transparent process, and help make it more accountable instead of posting about it on a forum thread.

Not talking about all posters by the way, some are just expressing the fact that they’re frustrated with waiting, and I’ve made a couple of those myself. I’m talking about the people that have expressed outright disappointment that their son/daughter didn’t get a decision while someone they know/“less qualified people” have. Really apparent after last week end of Friday.

I think you can’t just compare “greater qualified” with “lesser qualified” students either bc UT weighs heavily on essays and demonstrating fit to major. Those are very gray areas. We attended a Dale Price webinar this summer and he emphasized the weight of all the essays and proving fit to major over and over. In fact, the emphases on fit to major was so great----ie, beginning by 9th grade with the classes and extracurriculars totally driving toward the major that I thought “How in the world does a 9th grader know what they want to do in life? This isn’t fair!” Perhaps that was a bit of a marketing scheme to get people to sign up for his services for their middle schoolers? I don’t know but it does make sense if they want some wriggle room for their holistic review. No one on this forum should think they are a shoe in for UT just because they have 1550 + SAT/National Merit/#1 class rank/etc. Just take a look at the past years’ forums and all the amazing stats kids who were rejected. It happens every year to brilliant kids with amazing resumes. There has to be something in those essays and fit to major that weeds them out. UT shapes their classes uniquely to fit UT and perhaps that is how they read between the lines to determine who they admit.
Edited to add: I forgot to mention Dale Price also emphasized applying within the first 30 days of the application opening too. He repeated that several times; I guess it shows interest and eagerness?

If they wanted a school full of kids with perfect stats, they could easily make that happen. But they want a diverse student body from different backgrounds, and they want kids who they think will fit in and succeed at their school. This is something I’m trying to remind myself of as I wait lol, but there is no such thing as a “I should get in there with my first choice major”. I think as students we are told too much that our grades and scores matter too much, but just remember, we are all MORE than just numbers. So keep that in mind while we wait until next year. Hope this helps anyone:)

Love the way @ChillyCow and @laurenc48 put it. Exactly that.

Bravo. I couldn’t agree more. And I applaud Texas and any other school that looks at each candidate holistically as opposed to just being a stat. No one can say who is or isn’t more deserving of acceptance anywhere.

Exactly!!! I saw on last year’s thread that people were telling oos students who were accepted that they didn’t deserve it over in state kids with higher stats!! That’s crazy, if you get in then bottomline you deserve it. Regardless of what your numbers are, where you live, where you come from, what your story is… Everyone who has gotten in already clearly deserves it, and those who additionally will also do!!

Yes, it’s a very rigorous private school. About 40ish kids get in at UT each year across all the different programs and majors. Usually about 10-12 of them enroll. I agree it would be much harder to predict in a larger school.

Here’s a big school example – My son’s school is one of the top public schools in TX - usually in the top 2. This year 259 students applied to UT from a class of close to 700. My older son’s class in 2017 had 302 applicants and 145 acceptances - 52 enrolled for a class of about 700, as well. Generally, about 250 applicants each year and about half get in.

My S17 is a senior in the MPA program. He’ll get his master’s in 2022. He started out as undecided and was not auto-admitted. Transferred to McCombs his sophomore year.

Those stats are crazy — both the number of kids applying AND being accepted. A few years ago I saw stats for Texas high schools (I just can’t remember where I got them), and our school had 20-30 kids admitted out of a class that was probably around 500. There wasn’t a breakdown by major.

I also suspect that the number of acceptances COULD be higher because Naviance only knows if someone was accepted to a school if they put it in the system (or if they matriculate, of course).

I don’t know if this means anything but I just checked my UT Austin portal and under the tab for “Recommended” it was always 4 things listed, but now it changed to only 3. I still have 12 things listed under “Done.” Does this mean my decision is coming out soon? Did anyone else have this happen to them?

The same thing happened for me! I’m not sure what this means.
