UT Austin Class of 2028 Official Thread

I don’t know how UT Admissions, or any other school can be more transparent short of handing over a specific student their file and telling them the exact reason they were rejected. Also, I don’t feel this is school specific at all, the same convo is playing out on the TAMU boards.

In 2021, my eldest was waiting on his decision from TAMU. He submitted his app first week of August. This was the first class to apply post Covid…the class that had zero chance of securing good SAT/ACT scores because the pandemic hit their junior year. My son had 8 canceled tests between the ACT & SAT. No one in Texas had any real experience with Test Optional admissions at that point. My son was in the first quarter, 14% class rank at a huge 6A high school. 6 AP’s, 4 Dual Credits, 3.6’ish unweighted GPA, 4.2 weighted…Section Leader or Marching Band, our city’s Youth Action Leader, plus a consistent part time job since 10th grade. He even did a Supply Chain internship with my husband one summer with my husband’s company in Hong Kong while my husband was there for work. He didn’t get a decision from TAMU until right before Spring Break in March…PSA…which was totally a soft reject because there isn’t a PSA pathway for business majors. We were expecting Blinn Team. But nope. He was crushed. We knew kids in his class with lower rank, GPA, no relevant EC’s or leadership and no test scores that got admitted via Gateway & Blinn Team. It made no sense.

So I get it. I really do. But what transparency can these schools give us? There just isn’t enough space at the flagship schools for everyone that want to attend.

My eldest ended up at Texas Tech. He got good merit scholarships, is graduating a semester early and doesn’t even remember that he was ever rejected from TAMU.

some of the low stats admits may end up struggling once they get to UT. the ones who are intelligent but just came from a non competitive area can prob bounce back by changing their study habits but I bet that will not be the case for all of them

our student’s honors portal said submitted, then pending, then accepted. It changed to accepted sometime after midnight on the morning of 2/2.

Wendy is great and very informative.

it is not binding, but you may not get all the deposit back. check.

but if you really want to be on campus, chance is better the sooner you do it.

To live in campus housing, you do NOT need to submit your enrollment deposit of $200. You need to submit the $50 housing fee asap. You can submit the housing fee prior to committing to UT with the enrollment deposit.

For those looking for more information on CAP, I found this to be a very useful resource:

https://www.reddit.com/r/UTAdmissions/wiki/cap/

It is worthwhile to read it fully and understand the rules why only around 1000ish of the 22000 students capped participated in it in 2021.

There is but we do not know what yet. My student has a message saying forthcoming.

Good luck!

Almost 48 hours later I have to say the CAP/rejection still stings. :disappointed:

Friday was rough for DD at school with everyone talking about who did/didn’t get in. She was non-auto CNS and knew it’d be a bloodbath but was hoping her grades/1530 SAT, ECs, Essays, Letters, etc. would carry her through. Her best friend, non-auto with a 1230 SAT and much lower stats got in for liberal arts. Also reading about all the amazing kids top 1% not getting into their major makes it difficult to reconcile. It’s a tough bitter pill to swallow for sure.

My older DS is a ‘26 student there and I’m an alumni so we’ve loved UT since day 1 and were dreaming DD could join her older brother. It’s hard to balance my joy for my DS who is there and loves it and my disappointment that they didn’t take my DD. There was a strong emotional attachment for sure. :disappointed:

The grief comes and goes in cycles but such is life, and onward to the next option. Thankfully she knew this was a strong possibility and applied broadly and has other great options. Best of luck to everyone who’s outcome wasn’t what they’d hoped for—something better is waiting out there.

Congrats to all students and parents who were accepted.:heart::heart:

Same w/ my daughter who was also public health capped. She said so many kids with great stats / competitive majors got capped. Yet, others with lower grades etc. admitted into majors not as competitive. So yes… still stings.

Yes, congrats to all who were accepted and parents!

I really empathize, it’s difficult to move past. :disappointed:

My DD is pragmatic and evaluating other options doing alright overall. The disappointment comes and goes. Just would’ve been nice to have an “easy” conclusion to this whole stressful process and get the UT acceptance and call it a day and enjoy the rest of Senior year. We’re already super familiar with the school and all the housing and academic processes. Now wherever she goes feels like starting from scratch in terms of figuring out what deposits or lists she needs to get on for housing, etc. She had only put the $50 housing deposit for UT right after she submitted her application. :upside_down_face:

Hugs to you all and good luck with next steps. :mending_heart:
