UT Austin Class of 2028 Official Thread

I assume the Admissions uses modeling to estimate how many STEM kids might take COLA offers (mostly none of them will enroll - they will most likely enroll at another college which offered them STEM major). With that in mind, Admissions proceeds to send acceptances to a number of students who wanted COLA majors (calculated by the model) that would make up the class size they need. Sometimes, they overestimate, sometimes under, so they use appeal process to draw kids from if they underestimate. This is my understanding of the process, and I might be wrong.

It will be hardly opening up spots because UT grant admissions based on previous years yields.
So if they need to admit 100 students to a major, and the major last five years yield was 60% on average, they offer 166 admissions. Under very rare situations when only 95 confirm admission by end of April then a few spots will open, but that’s rare for hot majors.

Hello my son was admitted and we are OOS. We know housing contract opens on 3/1 and we are looking for input as to which housing is best and which is not so good? Also, he didn’t see any information regarding admitted students day. Does UT Austin do those? Or should we just to a campus visit on our own? Finally is there a parents page on Facebook? Thanks so much.

It should say in your decision if you’ve been accepted or deferred from Take the World by the Horns program along with what degree program you got into for UT.

Last year it seemed there was movement in CNS Honors right after Ivy day, particularly in Deans Scholars. A lot of the students already accepted to CNS Honors are waiting on Ivy day to make final decisions. I was one of them last year. (Polymath for me). Many Dean’s Scholars will get accepted to Ivy, they will decline UT and a few of the deferred students will get in to cns honors.

DS 24 OOS denied McCombs but email sent with option to join waitlist for ā€œTake the World by the Hornsā€ā€¦ if accepted he’ll be offered a spot in Liberal Arts… reviewing majors like Global Studies…

Offered LAH; just checked portal today haha

That makes a lot of sense. On my mystatus page they are promising a decision by March 1. I assumed this meant a definite acceptance/denial at first but who knows.

Big, big question. Do you lose the confetti page when you accept admission? We waited for it for SOOOOOOO long that we don’t want to lose it yet!!! Ha!

Nope  I paid my enrollment deposit and still have it

My brother was a candidate a few years ago. They don’t tell you the numbers in the earlier rounds, but they do if you get selected to become a finalist to interview with the foundation scholarship committee. UT just collects the information and is the liaison for the foundation.

Same here!

Can anyone help with on-campus dorm selection process? We did not put down a deposit until the night of the big admissions announcement last Thursday.

Realistically, will dorms like Duren or San Jacinto be available by selection time? 24 is looking into rooming with friends with earlier slots and off-campus separately. We think we have a good understanding of the off-campus options already. 24 may go that route but we are trying to understand the on-campus selection process better.

Thanks!

My son put down the housing deposit in February last year as soon as he committed (got accepted Jan 30th) and was still in the first round that got housing contracts. His dorm selection time was on the second day and there were still rooms/options in San Jacinto.

There was some discussion about housing higher up the chain. A lot of OOS students live in West Campus. What are your student’s interests? West Campus has a high number of Greek life students, but also plenty who are not affiliated with fraternities or sororities. Below are two Facebook groups. One for the parents of Class of 2028 and one for OOS parents at UT. Congratulations!

Edit: The Class of 2028 above is for the new students. Look for the parent group on Facebook or otherwise ask to join the class of 2027 or 2026 until a group for your year has been created.

How many applied for McCombs in the top 6% vs engineering, CS, pre-med, etc.?

I don’t have that information. Only the number of kids who were admitted to McCombs. A few brilliant kids were not given their first choice of CS and landed with COLA

Has anyone gotten an email for an interview for CBHP after being admitted to McCombs last week?

When kids don’t get their major at UT where do they tend to go? All over I presume. I knew capped peeps who went to Wash U and UNC. Also A&M when didn’t get BioMed ENGR at Cockrell.
