Does anyone have any information on the College of Natural Sciences admitted student events? I looked online but can’t seem to find anything specific to CNS like Cockrell does. I’m also a CS major, so if there is anything for CS specifically I would appreciate it.
From what I’ve seen UT honors seems to be unlike other honors programs in that it’s only really associated with scholarship. No extra classes, no leadership/internships, no advantage in registering for classes, etc. So if it truly is just a means of delivering scholarships, it could make sense that they aren’t accepting many people, UT is known for how little merit scholarships it offers. That being said, if it’s anything other than that the number of rejections is absolutely insane. I got rejected and I’ll drop my stats because while I’m not a perfect applicant and believe it’s perfectly reasonable to not get accepted to every college or honors college, the sheer volume of great applicants denied honors is impressive.
OOS Kentucky (Geographically that should help if they’re trying to diversify their stats right?)
36 ACT (36 in math and science, 35 in Reading and English)
4.0UW/4.8W
12 APs (All 5s except one, 5s in Chem, Calc AB, Stats, Comp Sci Principles, and self-studied and got a 5 in Macroeconomics) +4 APs senior year
All A+s Junior year with 6 APs and self-studying Macro
4 years of involvement with Tech Theater, regional nominations & awards
4 years of involvement in Mock Trial, consistently placed top 5 in State
Consistent Involvement in St. Vincent De Paul charity volunteering
Strong Essays and mid-strong recs
Held part-time job as soccer Ref. 2 years and as Barista 2 years after
While sure I could have had extracurriculars and recs more related to my major (Aero Eng.), and yes I could have cured cancer or published papers or devoted my life to community service, I just don’t get who they’re looking for if I and everyone else with similar and better stats is getting denied. Thanks for attending my TED talk. I don’t get how their honors college is more selective than getting into GT or MIT
Figured this would also help future applicants who see this get the reality check that maybe I needed sooner lol
My friend’s kid was just direct admission to GT Aerospace ENGR but not honors. Didn’t apply to UT. Mountain region kid.
Just thinking that UT honors might favor the same things that MIT looks for.
My son was admitted to ECE on 2/2 and plan2 on 2/5. Denied engineering honors today. ECE honors still pending. Like many have posted he has very high stats too 2% in state (very large competitive high school) 36 ACT; 1590 SAT (800 math) NMSF, relevant ECs etc. I too was shocked to see the denial for engineering honors and still deferred ECE honors. We expected the opposite. Regardless we (especially my son) is thrilled to get plan2 on top of ECE.
Agreed
Same
I understand that some engineering honors decisions came out tdy, but do the majority of honors decisions (Deans, CSB, Turing, etc) typically come out friday 6-8pm like major decisions used to? Or is it a completely random date/time?
Kevin from Tex Admissions said to me that maybe 30 to 50 tippy tippy top kids get the scholarship. Fine…I wasn’t counting on that. But to see all these kids who are in the top 1% of the US in test scores alone not even admitted to the program? Seems like nonsense. Who got admitted withOUT a scholarship? Upward and onward.
I can only comment on what I’ve observed over the years. Honors is high stats plus “it” factor and most honors students actually do not get a scholarship, though there is some overlap. For example, my daughter was a 40 Acre finalist and all the McCombs 40 Acre finalists had gotten into business honors and received a scholarship. If you remember that the 40 Acres scholarship is completely independent of UT admissions, you’ll understand what I mean by “it” factor. Also, all the honors programs are special and not just a name only program. Plan II, business honors, and Turing, eg, are widely known and extremely well respected. That said, you’ll get an excellent education and have wonderful opportunities both on campus and off without being in any of the honors programs.
I’m reading an old post from a year ago on FBk. Seems like the same thing happened…where many high-stats kids were turned down. Here is a clip about the author’s son who did get in to Engineering Honors and got a scholarship…the mom said it was very generous and unexpected. “top 4% of his class 18/435. Football captain, NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, Phi Theta Kappa- earned his Associates in December. 1330 SAT - Petroleum engineering major” Maybe the scholarships are to people they need to draw in to fill seats? Also, some are commenting tonight that the available money could be limited or have dried up? At any rate, we all know who our kids are and we’ll soon shake it off and mooooooove on.
I know for a fact that last year one student from my son’s school got into engineering honors as a mechanical engineer and got a very large merit award. His stats and achievements were very similar to my son’s. I also met a current UT ECE student who said all his friends with 1550+ SAT got into engineering honors and got merit money anywhere from $8K up to free ride.
Isn’t it super frustrating? And the example I listed was someone with a 1330 and got a huge scholarship last year? In the same thread, people were listing their kids’ high stats and being turned down. I truly wonder if there is some kind of mistake…
Yes, this crossed my mind too. Oh well, I hope tomorrow is a better day. Good night.
I would argue any student that received their engineering major early must have had something the school was looking for (my son received his early December). But he is a lot more than his 1450 test score and top 2% rank.
the 1330 score might be very high relative to his high school and community peers and he has his associates while also being football captain and probably many other things.
What do I know? When I was in HS, UT tried to entice NM scholars with large scholarships.
Agree….doing really well in your school I would think would carry a bunch of weight for these things……it’s the WHAT and the HOW
I’m assuming that the for the honors programs, the essays are pretty important for deciding who gets in and who doesn’t just as much as test scores and grades.
Do you mind sharing a little more about the BHP scholarships? There isn’t much info online. How are they awarded, how many people typically receive a scholarship, and how much is it? Thank you!
No one knows. It’s a black box. The amount varies. My DD just received an email notifying her that she had been awarded a scholarship. The amount was enough to cover in-state tuition + fees + books for 4 years. Everyone who gets one is always surprised. It can’t be predicted and no one should get their hopes up about merit from UT.
