UT Austin Class of 2028 Official Thread

When you simply look at a number side by side with your child, I can see how it may feel disheartening, but we don’t know the full set of circumstances. What if the kid got a 1330 while battling cancer or English isn’t their first language and they work two jobs to help support their family. We can’t know why one person was chosen and not the other, but have to consider that there was something compelling in the other person’s application. I’m grateful for the opportunities I have and am excited for the journey ahead.

I have to defend myself here. it was not a dig against a score…but read the above comments and those on Reddit and on the Facebook group and parent after parent, kid after kid, is wondering how they were not even admitted. I could list the 9 pages of things my kid has done, as well as his being abandoned by his father, yet thriving. He is supported only by me…and we live in the country and travel hours a day to keep him in his activities and his community college where he was one of two people in the entire district named to the All Texas Academic Team, which puts him in the running for All USA. That’s a microscopic part of it…a nationally competitive fencer, certified fencing ref, 4.67W, 35 ACT…Leader in many really interesting groups where he also volunteers. The two of us never stop. I know that describes a lot of people who have input to this subject since yesterday, so I don’t say that he stands out…though he is a massively amazing creative writer (with submissions and publications), too…so his essays are spot on as well. He will be on the Longhorn Fencing Team. He has already told them he is pursuing a minor in his engineering interest and the Master’s there, too. He can’t DO MORE. So, when I’m merely echoing the wonder of many parents and kids here of how their 1570s and 35+ ACTs were passed up not just for a scholarship, but mere ADMISSION to an Honors program… it is a valid question. I offer my apologies to anyone here who thinks I was insulting a 1330 and the person who made it. Not at all. It is simply a comparison along with the others here who have also been disheartened by a high stats kid being outright rejected from an Honors program. And…my kid also has 2 classes short of an Associates, with Calc 3 and Honors Engineering Physics 1 and 2 under his belt and an average of 2 sciences a year from 8th grade forward, including AP. I didn’t expect him to win a scholarship…that was a hope. But (again echoing many others since yesterday, including my conversations with Tex Admissions) I did expect him to be admitted to the Honors program. I’m seeing that the program is not what many of us thought it was, and that makes sense because UT is not transparent about many things. True Honors programs typically have a set of criteria. Given many of us and our students have busted hiney to meet all criteria we can think of (including my kid having an impossible to find Electrical Engineering internship as well…most companies told him he had to wait until he was a junior in college—which he is, actually, given his DE credits) it is confusing. Again…if I could delete my usage of the number 1330, I would. It is a terrific score. Of course it is! It does not diminish the kid I was discussing. But in a world of numbers, and knowing 1330s are not often published along with acceptances to UT engineering, it seems relevant in this confusion.

At what point an admitted student gets access to his UT email and wider student portal? My student got this type of access at other schools he got admitted to, but I can’t see how to access that at UT. Do only enrolled students get this? I heard from students from prior years they were able to download their financial aid offers from the portal, but I do not see where that is at? Anybody knows?

I believe you need to ugprade your EID to get things like the UT email and more. A link to that is on MyStatus.

I may be wrong though, but this is the only thing I’m seeing on there to upgrade your EID, and get access to more things.

Does anyone know when financial aid offers usually come out? Is it in mid-March? I wonder if this is going to be delayed this year due to FAFSA delays, like Texas A&M already announced. I do not see any announcements about this on UT website.

From the UT Austin Fin. Aid OneStop, full offers will come out after the FAFSA is processed, in the summer. UT Austin is switching to a new website “Check Aid Status Here” (CASH), and they say CASH will be updated through the Summer up until “fall 2024.” They don’t say an exact timeline, but at least, I believe you’ll see any merit aid from admittance into any Honors Programs listed in MyStatus.

So, do I understand correctly that we will not be able to compare all the fin aid offers before we have to make a decision which college to attend prior to May 1 deadline?

I’ve just called UT fin aid office. They said they are prioritizing fin aid packages for incoming freshmen, and they will come out in April. For all current students, they will not come out until summer. The notifications will be sent out by email.

My son got in Turing On 2/1. Rejected by the Engineering honors. Still no word for the Dean’s. The Turing website says a goto_Turing event is held in late February every year, but anyone knows the exact date? We are OOS and need to book flights, hotel, etc.

Congratulation on getting into Turing! This is a great accomplishment. Regarding the event date you were asking, I would call UT directly to make sure you get the most accurate information.

Thank you for sharing.

Any updates today for anyone applying for Deans yet?

My son got Dean’s the same day (1 hour after) receiving the decision on 2/1. I saw several reported around the same time on this board.

Feb 26 is virtual, the March 26 one is in person. No need to attend in person.

Thanks for the info. Did you receive an email about it? We couldn’t find the date anywhere

PM you.

anyone else still waiting on liberal arts honors? I’ve seen a few acceptances so Im worried theyre just making me wait for a rejection. I did apply on the last day so that could be part of it
