To establish domicile is shorter, but it is complicated. This link is on the UT website “Residency Questionaire Instructions” you can access with your UT EID: https://reportcenter.highered.texas.gov/agency-publication/blank-forms-templates/cfat-residency-core-questions/
Nursing daughter got it too. Does everyone get this invite/email?
S24 got that email too. The program is more toward reading and discussion… more about discussion of philosophy and idea from several great books.
from the school site…
“The Jefferson Scholars Program is a challenging, six-course integrated sequence in the great books and ideas of the ancient, medieval, and modern worlds”
It sounds like a great program that my kid would love… but then on top of Electrical Engineering it sounds like EEEEEEKKKKKKK!
Hey y’all, did any of you guys who got accepted get a text message from a current UT student? One of my friends who was accepted into UT for government got a text from someone saying they were a current UT student in Government and asked if she had any questions about life at UT. I haven’t gotten anything like that at all since my acceptance, albeit for a different major.
It seemed kinda harmless, but she thought it was weird that she had never heard of UT doing this before. (She also reads these college forums so she’ll see your responses)
I agree, this sounds great and he would love to do it, but not sure if workload will be doable for my MechE student. He also got an email and will probably going to pass.
My son did not get any texts like this.
Received the same and a bio major.
My kid will likely pass on it, too. I’m thinking ECE plus possible honors curriculum (to be announced by March 1) will be plenty. : )
I hope he gets in to ECE Honors.
Any CAP students get the “intro” email from their selected school yet?
Awww…thank you! It would be really cool. Is there a MechE equivalent? And where will your kid be staying, in dorm or off campus? We are hoping for Jester West.
Unfortunately, there is no MechE equivalent. One of my son’s friends is also waiting on ECE honors decision. My son wants to roommate with 2 of his friends and they already decided on a dorm away from engineering part of campus. They want to mingle with students from other majors. I do not recall the name of the dorm. Now, they just hope to be able to pick their first choice dorm in June.
Does anyone have any info/know anything about UT Nursing?? It’s a small major, so I assume that’s why it isn’t discussed much, but ANYTHING?? Anyone?? OOS daughter trying to make a choice.
I did some scouring, here’s some things I could find on it:
While it may not be the best source, reddit has some discussions on UT nursing: Reddit - Dive into anything
Looking through the course catalog, here are some of the requirements to get a BSN: Degrees and Programs < The University of Texas at Austin, along with courses: N - Nursing < The University of Texas at Austin
There are approximately 450 undergraduates within the 4-year BSN track with what seems to be about 120 students per incoming class, coupled with 99 nursing-only faculty. The department also boasts several accolades in research and fellowships.
With certification, UT Austin has a 85%+ pass rate for Licensure exams (Student Achievement | Institutional Reporting, Research, and Information Systems (IRRIS)) which I would say is quite high.
I will note that UT Austin is one of the best in the nation for any medical-related field. With UT Austin housing its nursing school, and Dell Medical School, the university is well equipped and ranks highly among both MD and BSN schools. Here are some of their rankings:
https://nursing.utexas.edu/about/facts-rankings
In other news, the summer of 2023 brought news that UT would be building a new cancer center adjacent to the current MD school, to be completed hopefully in a few years. Currently, demolition of the old Frank Erwin center is set to be done by October of this year. University of Texas System Regents Announce Plans to Build UT Medical… | Dell Medical School
For any postgrad nursing degree, they can pursue that at UT also, as UT’s Nursing School offers several master’s degrees in nursing, that can help further your child’s education. In addition, both Central Texas and Texas as a whole house have many good hospital systems. Both the Seton Ascension system and St. Davids system are near UT Austin, combined to have over 5 large regional hospitals, alongside several smaller ones and clinics. Your child, after graduation, could pursue a job at any of those hospitals.
In addition, just three hours east is Houston’s Texas Medical Center, which is the best medical plaza in the world, and another post-undergrad opportunity. North of UT, in the DFW area, is the UT Southwestern Medical Center as well, alongside several other hospitals.
UT’s Nursing Department also offers career counseling, which will help your student through getting a job in the nursing field, or help them enter graduate school. Career Services | School of Nursing
There are also many student organizations within the Nursing department that your child could join and find support with throughout the 4 year BSN track. Students Organizations | School of Nursing
The only thing I’d note in your deliberations is cost. UT Austin isn’t cheap for out-of-state and will run you a sticker price of over $60,000. If you do get financial aid, it may help lessen the blow, but it is much more expensive unless you can establish residency (refer to previous conversations on that).
I do hope this is what you’re looking for, if you’ve got other questions I can keep poking around.
I asked my son and his first choice is also Jester West. He is saying this is one of the most popular dorms. Our kids may cross paths
On yesterday’s engineering Q&A virtual event they said they limited engineering honors to only 40 students this year. I wonder if they changed this year or it has always been like this? I had an impression that in previous years everyone with SAT 1550+ got in automatically. I hope @FriscoDad can chime in with his thoughts.
It has been like this, but not really set a fix number though. Around 40-50 per year. But at the end graduating with honor (by GPA) is more important.
I got CAp’ed for computer science, and I want to appeal.
Anyone know how successful appeals usually are?
From your experience, is there still a chance of getting a merit offer from UT if a student was not selected for engineering honors?
