In state. She was auto admitted in September but didn’t hear about her majors until mid-December.
Could someone be so kind and explain what PACE vs CAP’ed vs Direct Admit means? Also, does anyone get an offer of their 2nd choice of major? Than you so much.
PACE is a partnership program with Austin Community College. It is only compatible with certain majors (mostly in liberal arts/comm). PACE students will take some classes at UT and some at ACC their freshman year, but are guaranteed to become a full time UT student after that if they have a certain GPA.
CAP is the Coordinated Admission Program. Essentially, students must enroll at another UT Campus (UT Dallas, Tyler, etc.) for a year, but are guaranteed admission to UT if they have a certain GPA. It is far more common than PACE.
Direct admission just means that a student was admitted straight to UT.
2nd choice majors are generally only given to auto-admitted students that did not receive their first choice major (there are exceptions, but these are rare). It’s complicated, though. If an auto-admit applied for two competitive majors but was not admitted to either, they would be given a major that was not 1st or 2nd choice. These are almost always liberal arts majors.
Same for my son
Does a 32 ACT for an OOS student make their application not competitive enough for UT?
Depends on major
International Relations+ Global Studies Major?
32 is fine for that
Super helpful. Thank you so much.
Is Statistics and Data Science an easier major to get in?
Thanks for your help.
No major is easy, but it is not an ultra-competitive one like business or anything to the best of my knowledge.
I’m not for sure and UT doesn’t release exact statistics on this, but from what I’ve seen in my HS, it’s pretty competitive.
As a current freshman in UT CS, I remember being in y’alls shoes a year ago. Just know that everything will work out regardless of if you get admitted or not!
My in-state student is still waiting for his major as well as a few of his class mates. All high achievers. They were auto-accepted in October/November. None of the kids in our high school ever received a decision prior to late January release. So, I assume a lot on auto-admits are still waiting.
I’m sure. It seems that the pre-Jan drops have been smaller than normal this year. I’d bet they’ve filled less than 10% of the class and each major. Still a lot more coming.
And CAP and PACE students are NOT guaranteed their major upon return to UT.
Decision day (for most) has arrived. Good luck all!
My son is a Freshman currently in the PACE program. Pace is only offered to students who are wanting to major in the College of Liberal Arts, Moody College of Communications, School of Social Work or College of Education. Through the PACE program, you take 4 classes at ACC (Rio Grande campus which is about 10 minutes from campus) and 1 class at UT a semester. One of your UT classes has to be the UGS. You are also required to take a weekly, non credit PACE seminar. At the end of Freshman year you need a 3.2 ACC GPA and 2.0 UT GPA to transition to full time UT student majoring in one of those 4 colleges listed above. For those wanting to major in Moody, it’s a slightly higher 3.5/3.0 GPA requirement. Tuition wise is such a savings! You pay ACC $1080 for the 4 classes (you get in district rates) and the one UT class is about $2200 for the semester. So for the whole year tuition, both campuses we paid appx $6500’ish give or take.
As a PACE student you are 100% a Longhorn. You can live in the dorms (my son is in Prather Hall), participate in any and all clubs etc, same amenities like the gym, Big Ticket Sports Pass etc, same UT ID…no one even knows you’re in PACE unless you choose to tell them.
During orientation last summer, they told us they only send out about 200 PACE offers, the program enrollment limit is about 100, so it’s highly coveted and highly selective. The students who are offered PACE are usually just a hair shy of auto admit (my son’s class rank was 6.4%!!!), want to major in one the approved colleges (my son’s first and choice majors were Econ/Govt, both in COLA). They STRESS that at the end of the PACE year, do not try to “game the system”’and try to request a transfer to McCombs or something else outside the approved majors.
PACE has been a win-win situation for us. It’s a great program, excellent support and guidance for these kids transitioning from high school and all of my son’s ACC classes are taught by professors.
PACE students are guaranteed their major. My son is in PACE right now. There are 4 approved Colleges (Moody, COLA, Social Work, Education)…as long as you meet the PACE and UT gpa program requirements, you will transition to your major of choice within one of those 4 colleges. When we were at Orientation last year, the advisors and program coordinators told us that PACE is really only offers to applicants who wanted to major in one of those 4 colleges anyway but were just shy of auto admit or were holistically reviewed and their major of choice was full.
