Common App says “downloaded by college” this morning!
Curious about this…which essay would need to address what the student will do with the UT degree? This year UT is just asking for the generic Common App essay, the why major essay, and the “which activity are you most proud of” essay…which btw, feels very repetitive of the resume and activities sections to me.
Same…finally!
My son’s stat:
SAT 1460, weighted gpa 4.3/5.0, unweighted 3.68, top quartile of a very competitive high school (class size around 800), 32 college credit hours, many AP and honor classes of computer science.
EC is pretty standard, including marching band, lots of volunteering hrs, NHS
He is interested in UT data science which is a pretty new major (not much info can be found for this UT major so far), does he have higher chance if he applies by early action deadline?
Another question is, I am curious if UT will consider his second major choice, if he is non auto, since UT is highly selective.
For your 2nd question from Frequently Asked Questions - University of Texas Admissions
so for UT, for non-auto, it’s like either you got admitted to your first major or nothing??
My son is top 1% SAT 1450 uw4.0 w5.44 multisport athlete nhs mualphatheta nshs and a variety of other clubs independent research summer ap courses looking to major in neuro pursuing a prehealth cert and polymathic honors. Anyone know the stats for successful application to honors programs the past few years?
Correct. Nonautos get a 1st choice or a 2nd choice (from the non-impacted major list…mostly cola/education/communications) or they get capped.
anyone knows average stats for Data Science major?
They don’t provide stats by major and Data Sci is new but it will be similar to Computer Science…it is the second choice major of many (most?) CS majors. So HIGHLY competitive. It’s still a small cohort. I would expect avg SAT over 1500 and rank very high.
Then it’s a big reach for my son…
Can UT application be submitted without Counselor rec letter/ School report as my D’s school says their school report won’t be available until September 2nd week to add on Common app? Can she submit the application first?
Has anyone received their EID yet?
Nope- we applied 8/1 via Common App
Nope - applied 8/1. Actually applied to 9 schools on 8/1. Only 1 of 9 has given portal access so far.
I’ve looked into this - as DS in same boat - val, 1500 SAT, uw 4.0, multisport etc etc. I’ve heard shoot for SAT above 1520 - I’ve also heard it isn’t quite that important given if EC in the science area especially as applied to that major are superior. Anyway, it is worth applying but the science honors are very very tough - Kevin Martin talks about it on his blog and he thinks science honors are the same kids who could have gotten into ivies, i.e., that competitive.
yes it can. Transcript, SAT, school letter etc, can all come later. You can also upload a resume later. You really just need to have your essays done.
Essay question. We see this list (below) of essays on the UT website. But when he is in the common App under his UT tab, he just sees where he can write the short answers and the optional short answer. For the long essay, does he submit another essay in addition to his all school common app long essay (and if so where does he put it) or is that just assuming his common app essay is his long essay (so the summer/fall 2025 Essay below equals whatever you write for your common app essay)?
Summer/Fall 2025 Essay: Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. Please keep your essay between 500–650 words (typically two to three paragraphs).
Summer/Fall 2025 Prompts
- Why are you interested in the major you indicated as your first-choice major?
- Think of all the activities — both in and outside of school — that you have been involved with during high school. Which one are you most proud of and why? (Guidance for students: This can include an extracurricular activity, a club/organization, volunteer activity, work or a family responsibility.)
Optional Short Answer: Please share background on events or special circumstances that you feel may have impacted your high school academic performance.
I’m not sure I understand your question. The Summer/Fall 2025 essay is the Common App essay. It goes in the main Common App writing tab.
Ok, that was what we were trying to figure out. We thought he had to submit 1) common app essay 2) UT Essay on any top of your choice (500-650 words) 3) the two short answers. But it sounds like it is just the 1) common app essay 2) the two short answers. Is that correct?
