Looks like a yield protection to me as well but she has other great choices.

We lived in Madison-Wisconsin for quite a while. Great school and great college town. Highly recommend to visit that campus in case you have not done already.

Big congrats on all the other choices as well!

I doubt Va Tech yield protects.

I think their process is not just stat based. Their essays mean a lot. A lot!!! Especially the UT Prosim according to the school.

But it doesn’t really matter why they say no.

Best of luck.

Agree -it’s Very hard to get out of the 2 year LLC/RC contracts (almost impossible) so think hard on those before committing.

FWIW, West Ambler Johnson, which houses the residential college, also has regular dorm rooms (my daughter spent her freshman year there and was not in the residential college and therefore not bound to the 2-year contract). However, you will still have to pay the residential college fee (I think it was $50/semester back in 2021). I saw it on my bill and called about it. By paying the fee, your student is allowed to attend the residential college social events (picnics, pizza parties, etc.) but not the other things that the RC offers. Just something to keep in mind when choosing a room.

This is something I looked at when I first started researching schools.

Our HS graduates 480 students each year. UVA admits about 120 students from our HS and V Tech about 150 students each year.

All the admits to UVA are with a GPA of 4.4 and above. All the admits to V Tech are with a GPA of below 4.4 and waitlists all the students above 4.4. There are exceptions of course, but less than 10 students break this pattern. Test scores don’t add much value at all probably because average SAT is about 1535.

The only explanation I can think of that makes sense is yield protection. It also ties perfectly with how students actually behave. They apply to both and invariably pick UVA if they get into it.

if only the University of California system acted so predictably with in-state students. instead, they zip code/school limit.

The year my S22 applied to VT the four kids in the uppermost right of the naviance scattergram - so highest GPA + highest test scores - got waitlisted. Many below them got in. I can’t believe that four of the strongest students at the school wrote bad essays. I absolutely believe it’s yield protection.

I appreciate your perspective and no one really knows.

Va Tech says this. I believe them but everyone is entitled to their perspective.

Va Tech addresses yield protection here.

Yield Protection

Virginia Tech does not participate in yield protection.

Which high school is this? I find it hard to believe 120 were admitted to UVA from a single HS.

Maybe TJSST?

I know they say that, but I’m not sure what to make of it. Dont have a strong opinion one way or other, just trying to see what might be the factor that I am missing. I feel it is more like Duke saying their two essays are completely optional. It might technically be true, but does not seem to be so in reality.

This is interesting - how do you find out information on how many students from your high school are accepted and their stats to each college? I’d be interested to research my own. Thank you for any guidance!

Naviance (or similar databases that your high school might use)

Naviance has the data if your school uses it.

This is interesting. I have heard that it’s very hard to predict if you’ll get into VT or not. My D25 got into both UVA and VT as did many of her friends…some high stat kids and some very good stat kids (she’s a very good stat kid, so UVA was a hard target/reach for her). I do know one very high stat kid who didn’t get in, but I don’t know if he would’ve been good fit for VT anyway, so maybe they really can read a lot into the essays. Many people have told us how important they are.

3rd time going through the application cycle. All 3 applied to VT.

Kid #1: High stats - GPA and SAT; A few EC’s & 1 sport. Applied Pamplin and was WL. Never got off the list.
Kid #2: Good/medium high stats; few EC’s; wrote heartfelt essays; Applied ED (the last year they offered it) College of Science. Deferred, then accepted.
Kid #3: Good stats (similar to Kid #2); Tons of EC’s and volunteering. Applied EA to College of Philosophy and was accepted.

My non-scientific view is that VT wants smart, good community oriented kids but the highest stats aren’t the biggest factor, unlike UVA and other schools. Hope this helps!

Any tips you can share about writing the Ut Prosim essays? What kind of community services did your last 2 kids do? ECs? My kid is interested in VT for next year.

What kind of community service did he do?
