While We Were Sleeping - Upgrade

I just want to say a BIG THANK YOU to you all. We totally understand that this was a lot of change for y’all and we did our best to minimize the shock and awe of the changes. You guys have done great so far and deserve a big virtual round of applause. =D>

We strongly felt that this upgrade was necessary for the longevity and evolution of the greatest college information website on the internet. We have so many awesome and fun things planned for the future of CC and I personally can’t wait to get to work on them.

Would you be able to share in more detail the thinking behind this? I genuinely fail to see how much of this was necessary for this site to remain successful. I personally have been visiting the site for almost 9 years and it certainly seems to have only been growing in that time - and with absolutely no one posing a realistic competitive threat.

Thanks for at least listening to our opinions.

Doug - you seem like a nice guy - enthusiastic and technically proficient. But I hate the changes. I’ve really cut back on CC and will continue to do so. It’s just not fun anymore with these changes.

I agree. And no amount of upbeat attitude from the staff is going to make me feel any differently.

I’m adjusting fine and looking forward to additional fixes. The Remember Me feature will be helpful. Thanks Doug.

I agree with RVM and Ema. I’ve spent less time on CC since the update. On the old site, if there was a thread that looked interesting, I’d open it, read it, maybe go back to it on another visit. Now, I’ve only opened some of the threads I’d already read or posted on before the change. This thread is the only new one I’ve checked out. CC is less enjoyable now.

What happened to the thread in the Parents Forum that was about this…the one started by xiggi? I can’t seem to find it. Was it merged with some other thread?

Here is the thread started by xiggi. I hope the link works.
<a href=“In case you missed the announcement ... - Parents Forum - College Confidential Forums”>In case you missed the announcement ... - Parents Forum - College Confidential Forums;

Thank you…but why isn’t it coming up on my list of threads in the Parents Forum?

I found it on the second page of the Parents Forum.

I found it…the letters were a VERY light grey (presumably because I already read it), and almost invisible.

Please add that to the list of this to adjust. I’m using an iPad and my browser, mane seriously, threads I’ve already read come up in an unbold font, and a very light color.

I think I put my finger on why this whole thing has bugged me. For one, I don’t like being lied to. It is very obvious that the reaction to this has not been “fantastic” like claimed. I’ve poked around other forums on here and the sentiment is pretty similar to that expressed in the Cafe, Parents Forum, and Community Issues sections.
Second, it’s fairly obvious that this was rolled out long before even the glaring kinks were worked out (the mobile site is a disaster to say the least).
Third, you’d figure with a site this big they’d at least beta test it first… either that wasn’t done or they are the worst beta testers ever.
Really, it just feels like you snubbed the community that’s here and decided to do your own thing. Which is fine, your site, your money, you can do whatever you want.
That’s all.

The Common Application 4 was beta tested.

The problem was that the developers did not truly understand how students complete applications.

Perhaps a similar dynamic, here.

I agree, Romani. I think it is pretty obvious the reception has not been fantastic and the transition has not been smooth. Being told it was and that we are the best ever as we are increasingly disgusted doesn’t make me forget that this layout is borderline unusable, and the mobile site is unusable. The only thing that is NOT obvious to me is why this was necessary or why ANYONE would think this layout is even acceptable much less an improvement on the old one. Maybe something on the backedend of the site has been drastically improved, and it did need it considering how much downtime the site has had lately, but the layout is a joke. I honestly thought something was broken when I first logged in, it must not be loading right. And all the log in problems, and the fact that the solution is to use “remember me.” It’s a joke.

“Remember me” functions allow sites to capture even more personal information.

Not only are you logged in, but they have your email address, too. I guess I am interested in the privacy policy for this site, as it now runs. Are names being sold? Targeted ads?

We have all had loads of specialized banners since, well, forever.

The fact that only a few threads are seen on one page is a definite minus. It takes longer to view multiple pages, but I guess that is the main point.

It still bugs me that there’s so much white AND so few posts on my screen. It seems that All I’m doing is scrolling.

I think the new changes are fine. I really don’t mind the white screen. I would like the post numbers back and the location under our name instead of the senior member twice. There are some bugs but all in all I think they have done a good job. The thing we need to remember is that we don’t pay anything to use this site. ~O)

@doughill – I am another one who has been getting eye strain/headaches from all of the bright white negative space and have been on CC much less as a result.

Agree with romani’s post above. Sure wish I could reference the post number. It is NOT going “fantastic” and there has NOT been “enthusiastic” response to this. Do the mods really thing we’ll believe it if they say it often enough?

doughill, I see you popped in again today. Thank you. I still have not seen ANY moderator address the font size issue. And I have not seen ANY moderator address the post number issue.

There does not seem to be any systematic way for us to talk to moderators. I’ve seen mods popping into various threads for short periods of time, but by the time I get there, they’re gone. CC, this is no way to run an upgrade. I feel like my concerns are being totally ignored.
