While We Were Sleeping - Upgrade

About flagging threads you’ve posted in- on the Latest Posts list, I get a grey box telling me how many new replies. Good, I can run down the list and see there is new activity. But for most of those threads, all I did was look- it doesn’t mean I have a whit of continuing interest. Small complaint, just saying.

More annoying is the automatic “Save Draft.” No matter if I am planning to post something or change my mind and walk away, it captures what I typed. I have to go to drafts and delete, one by one. And, as we know, type one word and it stays in the Replies box forever.

^^^this. Just because I look at a thread once doesn’t mean I want to continue to follow it and see the new posts in the hundreds!! The old way where you could note new posts on threads where you COMMENTED was helpful.

It was a yellow circle and a red star, one for new comments and the other for posted- something like that.

Some color like the yellow circle or red star would really nicely stand out and be a welcome addition to all the white-grey-blue.

The same functionality is there now, except that you must bookmark a thread you’ve replied to manually, you are no longer automatically subscribed. The star is yellow if you’ve bookmarked the thread, and you’ll see the little gray “new” box if there are new replies. If you click on the date under the “Most recent” column it takes you to the post after the last one you’ve read.

Bookmarking = subscribing in the old forum.

And IIRC, in the old forum the only way to subscribe was to reply. Now you can bookmark a thread without having to reply.

Except I’m not going to bookmark every thread I read. To a degree, I’m not going to take extra steps to make those conveniences. During the work week, I’m popping in and out - those seconds add up .

You could subscribe to a thread on the old version, without replying, by clicking the subscribe button at the top of the page near the search box. You could then bring up a list of your subscribed threads using your control panel. Also, there was a symbol (I can’t remember what it was — maybe a checkmark in a box?) at the end of each thread title to indicate you were subscribed to that thread. This symbol made subscribed threads obvious when viewing the list of threads within a subforum.

But that was then and this is now.

You could subscribe to old forum threads without replying, notrichenough. I did it all the time. Just as SNL mom describes.

I never subscribed/bookmarked and if something automatic was done, I wasn’t aware of it. I’d run down “my posts” or whatever it was called or I’d run down the New Posts list.
Nre, thanks for all the support.

Would like to again state how I really dislike how just because I click on a thread ONCE that I am forever reminded of how many new posts there on on that thread? It’s one thing if I’m POSTING on that thread, but all I did was peek at some of these threads! For instance, because I peeked once at the “Cop Kills MovieGoer Over Texting” thread, I am now reminded that since that “peek” there have been 1.1K responses - is anyone else annoyed by that?

^ yes. Sometimes it bothers me so much I just click on them to get rid of the ridiculously high number of “new.”

Or I find myself more “cautious” to click on a thread that may or may not interest me cause I don’t want to have to be forever reminded that I looked at that thread once!

I find that I am clicking on “my bookmarks” much more often and only looking at all the threads in Cafe/PF maybe once a day, if that. I also find I’m not looking at anything but page 1 of both those forums.

I agree. I’m much less likely to click on a thread just out of curiosity because I don’t want to keep being reminded that there are X number of new posts since I was on. I read much fewer threads than I did before the change.

They tell me the new even if never clicked.

I’ve basically stopped participating in the long threads because seeing “100 new” makes me not want to click.

Sorry if this has been addressed, but I only log in when I plan to post. When I log in, I get bumped to the home page and have to find my way back to the thread I was reading here. Sometimes, the site then indicates that I’m not logged in and I have to try again. Is this something TPTB intend to correct?

Yes, I saw some “new” flags for some I can’t imagine having looked at.
Sorry if this was covered bit I did test bookmark and wound up with the lists of emails (and notifications) that someone had posted- was there a trick or do I just unbookmark? Ugh.

@silpat I have the same issue. I log in and then hit the college discussions tab and it goes there but I am no longer logged in and have to log in again. Ugh!

“Sorry if this was covered bit I did test bookmark and wound up with the lists of emails (and notifications) that someone had posted- was there a trick or do I just unbookmark? Ugh.”

Lookingforward, you need to go to account options (wheel at top right of page,) click on preferences and uncheck the notifications you don’t want to receive.

Thanks, EBee, just tried it.
