10/21 CyberAttack

I haven’t seen anyone mention it on this board, but it’s lighting up the eBay board, which is probably because PayPal has been hit. Has anyone else had problems?

Yep. I’m on the west coast and still can’t get on a bunch of websites- like twitter or CNN. Pinterest is also down for me. The local news website is only showing the front page but I get errors if I try to click on a story.

Third attack apparently underway.

People might not have been mentioning it on CC because it was difficult to get onto this website too. I was unable to access the boards for hours (kept getting the message, “can’t connect to server”)…

@prospect1 – now that is interesting as I did not encounter difficulty accessing CC at all but CNBC would not open periodically throughout the day.

I’m not having any problems. Just tried CNN and Netflix and they worked fine for me.

It all seems to be back up now.

@CT1417 - I have no idea how all of this works…but I had no problem accessing twitter or CNN … and yet Nordstrom.com was extremely slow and sometimes crashed. Other websites would not open for me at all. CC’s home page opened for me, but attempting to open the forums triggered the error message. I wonder if this type of thing affects different computers differently?

I think it may be going through its third wave, or at least that is how the CNBC link I posted above made it sound.

@prospect1 --I would just be revealing my ignorance to even attempt to guess! If my son were around, he could shed some light on how servers operate for different parts of the country.

I had trouble with random websites also and just attributed the glitches to this attack.

Cc itself might have been a victim of this.

It was a massive DOS attack (denial of service), and from what I read it wasn’t hitting sites (which is common), they were going after routing sites on the net, the one I read about was called DYN. These sites are basically the backbone of the DNS (domain name server) routing, that takes an internet URL like www.collegeconfidential.com and route it to the appropriate IP address for the servers running that service, they also can reroute traffic if a particular path is crowded. Hitting that is worse than hitting a website, because it will affect users trying to get to any number of websites. Depending on where you live and what backbone your ISP is on (I had no problems at work), you may route through a site like DYN and getted bogged down on some or all requests, while others may not have problems.

This is a trend, with these kind of attacks, they are moving from individual websites (like Amazon) to going after underlying infrastructure, which is pretty scary. Even though the internet is designed for adaptive routing and backup paths, the way it actually works you can choke traffic the way a car driving 20mph on a highway can cause a 10 mile backup.

This could be retaliation by Russia because of comments made by the government about stepping up efforts against Russian hacking, or may be China testing out cyber warfare technology (China a couple of years ago managed to redirect something like 25% of all internet traffic through servers located in China and supposedly are working on plans to be able to route all of it through there, which has serious implications for a lot of things, if it is possible (I am not sure).

Get used to it, I think this is getting to be the new normal, and I think the government and agencies like the NSA are as usual, way behind the times, they always seem about 5 steps slower than the rest of the world.

I’ve been getting CC errors “Non-existent domain”

CNN is talking about this tweet from WikiLeaks and if this message is related:
WikiLeaks ‏@wikileaks 1h1 hour ago
Mr. Assange is still alive and WikiLeaks is still publishing. We ask supporters to stop taking down the US internet. You proved your point.

I’m sure he’d love to believe it’s all because of him.

Assange is scum, IMO.

Anyone remembers The Outer Limits? “We are controlling transmission…”

Netflix didn’t work early this morning in nj- but did work later in day.

Would this have affected the Starbucks app on my phone? This morning I kept getting a server error when trying to place a mobile order. It looked like a lot of people were having the same problem, judging by the longer than usual line at the store.

No doubt Assange would be thrilled if it was because of him. Wonder if this was another attack by the Russian government. Creepy!

Assange really gives me the creeps… but was there anything that prompted his tweet? (Claims of his death?)
