So I’m an 8th grader applying to Lawrencevill for 9th grade. I have received high honors every year and have scored A’s and A+'s all throughout middle school. Additionally, I am a part of my school’s science olympiad team (2 years) and medaled at regionals twice (once this yr and once last yr) and states once (states competition is in March of this yr). I am also apart of my school’s jazz program playing piano, which I have been doing so for 9 years. I played in our school’s jazz ensemble in 6th grade, and jazz band in 7th and 8th grade (jazz band is higher). Last year, our jazz band won "best rhytmn section award at a music festival. I’ve been playing the flute for 4 years, and am in our school’s top band. I’ve been playing golf for 4 years, and have been on a PGA Jr. League team. I have been doing bharatantayam (Indian classical dance) for 5 years, and have performed countless of times. I have also been doing North Indian classical singing for 5 years, and have passed the praveshita exam with merit. I’ve also dance bollywood for 4 years and have performed many times. Last year, I had done cross country and track, but I’ve decided not to do it this year. Is it worth sharing on my application? Also, I received 93rd percentile on my SSAT, and am applying to lawrenceville as a day student. I also applied for a scholarship, but I’m pretty sure Lawrenceville has a need-blind system.
Do you have any examples of community service work you have done to show that you would make a positive impact on the Lawrenceville community? What do you have that shows you are a kind person and care about the interests of others.
On our PGA Jr. League team, we have different age groups of kids. I was able to help the younger kids improve technique and stuff like that- I’m actually going in depth about this in one of my essays.
Btw forgot to mention that I also play the bass in jazz band, and that the rhytm section is composed of the piano, bass, and drums.
Are you only applying to Lawerence? If you truly want to get into a BS apply to a wider variety of schools that have a higher acceptance rate.
Yeah, I only applied to Lawrenceville and a magnet school in my area.
You are great and a reasonable applicant, but they reject a lot of those.
Why not also apply to The Hun School of Princeton, Princeton International School and/or Peddie as safety schools?
Are you open to boarding? If so that obviously opens up a world of possibilities.
Depending on where OP lives, George and Pennington could be convenient options. If day schools are being considered, Princeton Day and Stuart could also be in the mix.
Hi - While I cannot chance you, I am happy to answer any questions you have about Lville. my daughter is a 9th grade boarder and absolutely loves it. They have put some amazing programs/practices into place this year. She also has a lot of day student friends and says you cannot tell who is a boarder or day student b/c day students are so well integrated into the houses.
Good luck!
Lawrenceville is not need blind.
My son was class of 2018 at Lville. In his entering class, there were about 16 desi students, equally split between males and females. About 2/3 were day students. Of those who matriculated, 3 were athletes and 2 were legacy. The other students were either valedictorians or at the top of their middle school. I’m not aware of anyone who received financial aid. Full pay students have a higher chance of getting accepted.
Not trying to be a pessimist, but it is very difficult to get into Lville as a day student, especially as a desi. There are only about 8 spots for girls in the 2nd form class, and of these, about 4 spots for day students. So you’re up against some tough odds.
Your stats and profile seem fine. They also like students who can play 3 sports per year (one per season). Are your golf skills enough to be a recruited athlete? Have you approached the golf coach?
I am not sure if these numbers still apply,
Hi, thank you for the useful response. I was planning to try out for the volleyball team and golf team if I get in. Is it too late to contact coaches (even after the standard application deadline)? If I do get into contact with coaches, should I send them stuff like videos of me playing? Also, on the scholarship meeting it said that Lawrenceville is need blind.
If you are very strong at these sports and likely to be an impact player, it could help to contact the coaches. If you are simply someone with some experience playing and more likely to play Thirds or JV your first year, don’t bother.
Lawrenceville is definitely not need blind.
Based on your comment, I went back to re-read the website. And they carefully wrote it to make it seem like financial aid is distributed evenly. But make no mistake, Lawrenceville is need-aware. They do take ability to pay into consideration when making admissions decisions. There is only one boarding school I’m aware of thats need-blind (Andover). If you need financial aid, then by all means apply for it. You don’t want to put your parents through a hardship. But know that this will make it more difficult for you to get admitted.
If you are strong enough to make varsity, then I would contact coaches now. If a coach really wants you, they can sometimes push you over the edge with admissions. But you have to be a strong candidate. Showing videos of your performance, or some objective measure of your ability (state or national rankings) would help.
Exeter is need blind as well.
I am not sure if Lville is now listing as need blind. But they did a very large effort the last few years to raise the ability to admit Faid students. St Andrew’s also another school to consider. Lville has made a ton of great changes/enhancements/focuses this past year that many may not be aware of. I would call the Faid office and ask - go to the source for the most upto date info. Good luck, Lville is an amazing school.
Groton is also need-blind, I believe.
