Some of the off campus properties that are walking distance are: U Center, Earle, Campus View and Bixby. You can look them up and see pricing. Off campus The Pier is popular. Hope this helps. You can DM me if you have any questions. My son’s a sophomore. Has been on campus both Freshman and sophomore year- but lots of his friends already live off so I’m somewhat familiar with off campus housing- or can ask him any questions you may have. He will live off next year.
Thank you!
Tell me about it… my son is likely deciding between Clemson and UTK as well! Between merit, Hope scholarship, honors program $ and in state tuition - UTK is crazy cheap for us. But I am pretty confident that he is going to pick Clemson. He grew up a fan and just loves everything about Clemson.
You can’t join the Clemson Facebook page until your student accepts admission. Off campus housing can be cheap or expensive. There are options ranging from $500 - $1700 for a room in a shared apartment. My daughter was in epoch sophomore year, private shuttle to campus. It was about $800 a month, pool, hot tub, kayaks and paddle boards, free tanning, volleyball courts, coffee bar, study rooms, goat yoga, dock if you have a boat, community events… the only downside was not really walkable to campus, my daughter didn’t have a car. She then moved to Earle ($1400) which has great amenities (she has a balcony overlooking the pool which is in a center courtyard with grills) but it’s in a great location downtown, she can walk to campus, bars and restaurants. It seems like most places come with full baths for each bedroom.
Sounds like UTK gives money for Honors participants, if I’m reading your post correctly? Keep in mind there is an additional charge for Honors College students at Clemson, currently about $1100/year. This was really surprising to us with my oldest daughter.
From my kids experience her COA got cheaper after her second year and living in an apartment. No big meal plan also brought down the cost as well. There are some very fancy places and of course the closer to campus the more expensive. But my daughter had a car and even her not that expensive place was nice, safe and had a pool.
Thanks for the housing/food ino @Mjkacmom and @burghdad - that is useful to know and to let me start researching. My older kid is a college junior so we’ve done this rodeo before, but in a very different location/setting.
It’s my understanding that housing in Knoxville is crazy expensive for off campus, so that will need to feed into our planning, it’s good to see that there are a tango of options near Clemson.
And re: honors college, thanks for sharing the cost info @UpstateSC3 - at UTK you get $500 your first year, then $1000 each following year (as long as you take the mandatory honors courses). So it’s not a huge amount for most honors participants (there’s a much smaller honors program that gives more money, but it’s very very small), but either way, students aren’t paying for membership.
As other posters have said, the Pier, University Village, the Reserve and a couple of others are all popular for off campus student housing. My S23 (sophomore) lives at the pier and we pay $550/month for a bedroom/bath in a 4 BR/4BA complex which has clubhouse (for game-days/get togethers or studying), pool, basketball/volleyball, and clemson shuttle stop. at Clemson, the majority of students live off campus by their 2nd year, which can save money relative to on campus housing
That’s pretty good. UTK seems more expensive to live off campus. Something we will need to seriously consider when deciding.
I say this with some reservation because I realize that it may not be an option for many, but purchasing one of these condos may be feasible for some. Clemson area is also significantly more affordable for purchase than many parts of the country. Depending on individual circumstances (price of condo, rents, extent of down payment etc), the rent on the other rooms can more than pay for the owner/student rent. Property management companies are closely embedded with these complexes, so the student doesn’t need to get involved - they can act like any other tenant amongst their group. I know a number of people who have done this. We all know that interest/enrollment in these schools is growing, and because of the lake and football games, it is also a destination/short term rental area. Hopefully this post does not get removed- I have no vested interest in this, just presenting options for cost savings which I know exist and are utilized in that area.
Def a good investment.
Son’s acceptance package came today. We live in the Upper Midwest. FYI for those still waiting for theirs.
Same. MA.
still no acceptance package (west coast)
I have a question- my daughter was deferred. What exactly does she need to put in the additional information form? Is that where she puts her grades from this semester?
I think that’s where you write a”Letter of Continued Interest.” But others can correct me if I’m wrong.
This is what we’ve heard too. Letter of Continued Interest and any new info from Senior year that wasn’t in her application.
Fyi about the letters of cont.interest… My son emailed his admission counselor about writing a “loci” and the counselor said that it would not sway their decision as they do not track interest!! The form was just to submit new information you may have…
Use the space to: self-report any new grades (e.g. fall semester senior year), any new test scores (send the result too), any new activities/leadership, report continuation of key activities (I continue to do x,y,z…), or even to discuss plans for future/summer activities. Also, since Clemson uses the SRAR, sign into that system from the Clemson applicant portal (its linked to the main SRAR website) and update senior 1st semester classes that were ‘in progress’ with grades. Please be aware that the SRAR will likely auto-update to other schools where your daughter applied and the SRAR was required. Therefore, I would only do this if the other schools have already made decisions (accept or defer) and/or the other schools are regular decision/still under review AND have indicated that they will look at senior year grades
Any insight on scholarships for OOS students? My daughter’s acceptance letter mentioned she would hear about awards in March - but curious if historically there are standard ranges based on GPA (4.4) ACT (35) Major (business) etc? TIA
