Did anyone apply TO and receive the Buckeye merit award (OOS)? Wondering if that’s an acceptable reason to appeal a $0 merit award? According to the OSU NPC, if my S22 submitted his ACT scores he would have received a $14.5k merit award. He didn’t submit scores to any school (my mistake or bad judgement), and didn’t get any merit. Could he submit scores now and would that make a difference?
Have you checked the scores from previous years needed to even be in the running for any of these awards?
I’m interested to see if my D22 who applied TO receives any merit. We’re in state and she already didn’t get into their honors program. OSU really isn’t top of the list for her anyways. She has a great offer and honors college admission at another state school in Ohio (smaller and more of a private school atmosphere) that seems like a better fit for her. I think the large class size at OSU and having to take an additional course because of the large lecture science courses was a turn off. We found this out on our tour last summer.
My D22 is OOS and received the National Buckeye Scholar award ($13.5k) and the Provost Scholarship ($2k). She applied for, but did not advance, the Eminence Scholarship. She was accepted into the honors program and Business School.
GPA 3.96 (UW), about 4.7 weighted.
ACT 33 superscored
Lots of ECs and work experience.
My OOS D22 applied TO and received the National Buckeye Scholarship. Hope that helps!
I’m going to guess who are talking about Ohio University. Unfortunately, I would love for my kid to go there. She got a ton of money and got into the Honors and Scholars program. They have a forensics chemistry department and we absolutely love it there. She feels it’s too much in the “boonies“ for her. Ugh! I do get it coming from Chicago and being like a 7 Hour Drive. If that’s the school you were talking about, it is absolutely stunning.
I think you might be the first to reply with test optional. Maybe there was one other. Do you mind if I ask their stats? Mine has a 4.7 GPA and around 17 honors and AP classes. Got nada!
I’m pretty sure you had to do it by a deadline. We thought the same thing and probably made the mistake as well. She just didn’t think her SAT even close to match her grades or extracurricular activities. And there is no appealing, I’ve called and they said there’s no negotiation. I’ve asked several people
Nope, Miami University. D22 just got her financial aid package from OSU which includes only the federal student loans she qualifies for at every school she applied to. OSU is more expensive than Miami for us! Miami gave her a pretty good scholarship for her GPA even though we’re in state. For her it’s not even a question that she’d choose Miami over OSU. She’s waiting on 3 other decisions but I’m pretty sure she’ll choose Miami.
Thanks for sharing your experience with calling! We were planning to call tomorrow morning. I honestly think that they’re overwhelmed with applications and therefore will not negotiate after the decision is made, but we’re going to give it a shot anyway. The COA appeals form is not yet available on the website. My S22 was accepted into Biological Scholars program (opted scholars over honors - can’t remember why!) and OSU was in top 3 choices. With no merit aid it’ll come off the list.
Same, I think we spoke before. Mine is in the law and society scholars program which is the most appealing thing because you already know where you live. Who knows, it all seems crazy! I’ve called, she’s emailed etc. etc. etc. will probably try one more time and then give it a rest.
OOS parent here, looks like just loans for us is it safe to assume no scholarships? At this point
If so we have to look at our other options, it’s a bummer but the almost 50,000 a year for us makes it difficult
Yes, from my understanding scholarships would have been included on the financial aid award. That’s crazy they didn’t give anything for OOS. I know many OOS that got $30k+ scholarships from Miami just for GPA.
That’s what I was thinking, will call to confirm tomorrow but yeah was thinking the same. It’s a bummer to not even get a little something
Yep, that’s what that means. We got just the max FAFSA money. It’s hard to swallow a $50,000 a year bill when the other schools are offering so much. Also hard to see your kid heartbroken. It will all work out ! We might be paying full price if we can’t change the kid’s mind. Lol
Yeah, we talked about it and she realizes it doesn’t make sense with that cost, I think she was a bit surprised to not get anything at all when it came to scholarships, on to our other options I guess
I know, same reaction with my kid. Hoping we can get them to the same logical place in regard to cost.
For those who applied to Morrill I called the other day and they said they have 4000 applicants this year! Hoping I am still in the running since I was already admitted in December, fingers crossed!
Miami
alumni here
OSU is in my son’s top 3 schools. My daughter is in her 3rd year at Miami, and OSU was in her top 3 as well. Miami gave her soooo much money, the only loans she had to take were the federal ones, but it was also her first choice. If your daughter chooses Miami, i hope she loves it as much as mine does. I can’t say enough great things about Miami and all the opportunities. If you have any questions, I’m happy to answer them for you. My son also got a lot of money from Miami, along with all the other schools he applied to, so we’re still deciding what is the best fit for him. Whether our kids land at OSU or another school, they’ll soon forget about this stressful process and be ecstatic where they are for the next 4 years.
