We were planning to visit if he got an acceptance. I think he would have really liked UNH. Right now, he’s focussed on the schools he got into, which is good. He has two other deferrals and some regular decision schools.
His UNH decision letter did not mention a LOCI, but they did say they wanted to see midterm grades. His midterm grades are almost identical to first quarter. Maybe they wanted to see that he could maintain his GPA with two AP classes.
Thanks for the support, parents of '24’s! I appreciate it.
This is such a frustrating process. If he is interested in UNH, he should reach out when his midyear grades are sent by his school counselor. It may be worth it to keep options open.
Deferral can mean lots of things not really related to that specific student. Viewed as qualified, but need to make sure they are serving their instate constituents before admitting more OOS. Viewed as qualified, but worried about housing as they are requiring they live on campus the first two years. Or as someone suggested, they just ran out of time and wanted to get something out that they are still considering applications, but it is taking longer than expected.
Deferral while waiting for midterm grades when test optional may be part the steps some colleges are taking when making decisions. There are several colleges with what feels like more deferrals than seen in recent years.
Also make sure he reported the 4 in APUSH. Sometimes when they check off test optional, students do not report AP scores.
Based on all I have seen with how open they are about wanting to serve students with various needs, I do not think the dyslexia would have been a deciding factor given all of the accomplishments shared.
Thanks, @Pathnottaken ! That’s really helpful. I actually realized that S24 only sent the APUSH score to the first college he applied to, so he will now send it to his deferrals and RD schools. I do understand that an OOS app without scores may be one they want to wait on.
We have heard positive things about support for learning issues at UNH, so I think posters are correct, that S24’s deferral is about other factors. It just made me second guess some of S24’s decisions, but I actually think he did the right thing.
I would be shocked, and saddened, if UNH (my alma mater) did not admit someone because of a disability. That has never been the UNH that I have known, and they have an office even dedicated to assistance for those with LD’s. So I don’t think that has anything to do with it.
Any one else apply EA and still not hear anything? My daughter reached out to her admission counsselor on 2/1 and he got back to her right away to say he was sorry, apparently her appliaction got bounced around in the system and that no one was able to access it, and that they found 3 other applicaitons this happened to in the process. He said he believed the problem had been fixed and she should hear something shortly. After a week went by and she didn’t hear anything, she reached out again, and her counselor never responded to her email. She waited another week and sent another email to her counselor and he once again never responded. It’s so frustrating because UNH is her top choice right now and she’s heard back from U of Delaware, which is her second choice and she’s considering just accepting their admissions because at this point she’s just so frustrated…I keept telling her to be patient, but I can’t say as I blame her.
That is indeed frustrating! Has she tried emailing the admissions office? My son had a similar situation with another school, in which the AO didn’t return his emails but the admissions office did respond. That said, at this point I think it’s worth a call to the admissions office so she can speak directly with someone.
So frustrating. I would recommend calling. I can tell you that they are dealing with a big increase over previous years. I think they were handling it well and it just caught up to them. If that doesn’t work, I wouldn’t hesitate to email the director of admissions.
Not yet, DD is still waiting. I’m thinking we should hear by mid-March but hoping for sooner. I have twins and I hate being in limbo (DS waiting still for 2 RD schools). DD has one other deferral that she is waiting on besides UNH and one waitlist which will let her know after May 1st.
Has anyone who has gotten into Honors received any additional merit (my daughter got 14k when she was first accepted but then wasn’t bumped up to the 19k amount when she got the email that she got into Honors). On the website, it says that Honors comes with additional $ so not sure if she she reach out to her rep to ask about it now? UNH is right now one of her top 2 choices while we wait to hear back from one RD school and the extra $ would make a difference.
She signed up for the Accepted Student’s day April 6 but that feels so long away!
Some of the colleges offer additional merit aid for students majoring within the college. I know the the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics offers a 5k merit scholarship in addition to the general UNH aid for Business/Econ/Hospitality majors. So perhaps that is where other posters received 19k in merit aid?
Interesting…I did read that. So that is a little confusing. There appears to be scholarships that Honor students can apply for/be nominated for, but they seem to be open to rising Juniors. I found this on the Honors FAQ page:
The Hamel Scholarship is a scholarship offered to a small group of Honors Students who are from New Hampshire, however, it says: “While most Hamel Scholars are chosen before matriculating at UNH, a small number of Juniors join the program each year. Members of the University Honors Program receive an invitation to apply for this and other scholarships in spring of their sophomore year.” So perhaps they were referencing this and the additional scholarship opportunities for rising Juniors on the honors website. But I can’t say for sure and perhaps some of this is still up in the air as Fall 2024 will be the first year with this new Honors College. Might be beneficial to reach out to AO for clarification though if it is a deciding factor.
Some of this is confusing as they are transitioning the Honors program into the honors college. So there are still the existing upper classes matriculating through under the other system.
There are additional scholarships for incoming first year students, too.
There are a number of additional scholarships open to first year students in addition to the posted merit aid. And some of the colleges have their own scholarships/merit aid, depending on their intended major. I would absolutely look into those! I was under the impression that the OP was asking about an additional scholarship due to her daughter’s admission to the Honors College. From what I read, there does not appear to be an automatic scholarship for Honors Students, but I agree that this could be different as they transition from an Honors Program to an Honors College. So in that regard, it could be helpful to clarify with Admissions.
Also as another point of clarification, the new Honors College is the “Hamel Honors & Scholars College” but there is also a program called the “Hamel Scholars Program.” The Hamel Honors and Scholars College is new this fall, but the Hamel Scholars Program has been around for a number of years. It is a program separate (but within) the honors program and does come with additional merit aid. However, it is (currently) only open to New Hampshire students. Just another point of clarification if that is helpful to anyone as they are very similarly named.
Here is an article about the donation that funded the new Honors College:
I got deferred for midyear grades and heard back last night
