University of New Hampshire Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

WVU and the AZ flagships have had drastic cuts. U of AZ is looking at 177M (obviously a much bigger school, but not exactly minor) Un. Of Arizona Faces $177 Million Deficit; Budget Cuts, Layoffs Coming

Big article today regarding UCONN in Chronicle of Higher Education. Looking at WVU-like cuts.

The austerity stemming from state and federal funding cuts is quite different from UNH’s current inability to deal with demographic headwinds: ā€œThe university’s main goal, Jeff Geoghegan (UConn’s chief financial officer) said, is to increase and find new sources of revenue to offset the drop in state support — primarily by increasing student enrollment and tuition.ā€

fair!

My DD2024 applied EA back in October. On December 19th her Status changed from Status: Awaiting Decision to Status: (it was blank). Said they will notify by end of January. It is now 1/31 and she’s heard nothing. Anyone else in the same boat? Just curious as to why she didn’t hear anything. She plans to touch base with Admissions Counselor tomorrow.

I was feeling better about the budgeting situation after reading about U of Arizona with $117million shortfall for the year.

Individuals losing their jobs and other related cuts are always very hard mid-year.

Universities have known for an about 18 years that there were population shifts coming…the age of current freshmen. I am on several committees in another part of the coutry with university admissions folks, UNH did well to get that close to balancing in a year with many unknowns still. Other universities are struggling. The timing with Covid and post covid federal funds going away is tougher, but most universities that was their reality too and it sounds like they are correcting course in a timely manner.

Definitely have her reach out tomorrow and restate how interested she is in UNH. The office will probably be very busy tomorrow as it is the final day for regular admit applications to be submitted.

D24 applied RD a couple of weeks ago and just received her acceptance today with 14k Trustee Scholarship. Definitely wasn’t expecting a decision so soon!

so she reached out to her admissions counselor last night who got back to her just a little bit ago to say he apologized but her application (along with 3 or 4 others) seemed to have gotten stuck within some automated processing error that didn’t allow anyone to access the applicaiton in order to make a decision and that he believes they have corrected the error and that they should be able to make a final decision shortly. So frustrating!!! Especially since we are seeing that people who just applied are getting acceptance letters and she applied back in Oct. Keeping our fingers crossed.

My son got his decision after a long wait and it’s a deferral. He has acceptances from schools with rates in the 50-60% range… Does UNH consider demonstrated interest? Could the deferral be because he disclosed a learning disability (dyslexia)? His high school is a highly competitive metro NYC public. Maybe he didn’t take enough APs?

OOS
UW GPA 3.83
3 AP’s
Test optional
3 season varsity athlete
Weekly community service
Undeclared major

I’m so sorry to hear that, and I’m definitely surprised as well. My son was accepted OOS with similar stats and activities (he also had a number of honors classes, so not sure if that’s similar). He has also struggled with a personal issue that, while not dyslexia, is related and which he also put on his application. Obviously no one can swear that was the case for your son, but I’d be very surprised. I certainly hope not. The UNH common data set indicates that level of interest is not considered. https://www.unh.edu/institutional-research/sites/default/files/media/2023-04/cds_2022-2023.pdf

I know this is of zero help. I wish I had some advice. College admissions has become a strange, confusing world. I hope that your son is happy with the schools to which he has been accepted.

So sorry to hear this, and I’m a little surprised to be honest. Those stats are well within the range for UNH, UVM, and any number of other very solid flagships.

What major?

I agree- very, very surprising that he didn’t get an acceptance from UNH yet, especially as an undeclared major.
There is a very short list of majors at UNH with a competitive acceptance rate (i.e Nursing).
Keep the faith! He will likely get in!

I am very surprised as well. I wonder if, like the southern schools, UNH ran out of time?
I can’t remember what state you are in, but we are from MA. If its any consolation at all - UNH does not give significant merit to OOS kids. At least not to MA kids - most of the MA families we know find SUNY schools, URI, UVM, UMaine and Udel all to be much better options cost-wise for OOS publics.
I agree with others that your son will likely get in though!!

That is really very surprising with that high of an UW GPA.

No way to know, sadly, what happened.

I wonder if his application (essay, interests, etc) indicate a poor fit, in some way and they are protecting yield? Did he write about his love of palm trees and adobe architecture? Or indicate interests they don’t offer? all ECs and classes about aerospace engineering and they don’t offer it?

i wouldn’t like to think it is dyslexia, which frankly any university should be able to support well IMO.

Thanks, @MRRB_SE . I’m pleased for your son and I appreciate your sympathy! My son does have some honors classes, but maybe UNH is not that familiar with his high school and assumes grade inflation? He did not submit test scores. He did get a 4 on the APUSH test…I wonder whether he should have submitted that.

He is happy with his acceptances, thank goodness. I’m glad that he had a lot of likely schools on his list.

Thanks also to @lovetractor @OceanAir and @Massmom10 . Y’all are really lifting my spirits! We are in NY, and S24 has been accepted at several SUNY schools, so he is in good shape. The UNH deferral makes me worry about his regular decision schools, but he’s not upset. (Very even-keeled kid.)

Thanks for saying so! I didn’t want to brag and we didn’t count our chickens, but it just surprised me. His essay was about a visit to a historic site in DC, how our guide made history real and relevant, and how he would like a job educating people about history. His interests are history, psychology and education. He did not write about a yearning for palm trees on campus  .

Maybe it hurt him that he only has two years of foreign language (due to dyslexia).

@randommom1 I thought he put undecided, but I checked and he put College of Liberal Arts, History for his first choice major. For his second choice, he put College of Health and Human Services, undeclared.

APUSH is no joke. He seems a highly qualified student. I’m really shocked here.

Is UNH a top choice for him? If so, perhaps he could submit a LOCI. Did it mention anything like that on his decision letter?

That’s surprising for sure, esp with the majors you cite. I think he’ll be admitted later.
