University of Tennessee Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

WOW, really? Wonder if a lot of enrollment acceptances came in all the sudden?

So do most people who are not accepted get waitlisted or get the program? Not a flat out rejection?

Last year there were more pathway program offers and waitlist offers vs. denials from my area.

She told me they truly don’t know and that the

I went to Arizona State in the 1980s, when they were the 5th largest enrollment in the U.S. with 45,000 students. They were squared-away with the process bc uh, that’s what they do. Every year, tens of thousands of applicants and they handled their business. How can a huge SEC school (nowhere close to the size of ASU, I might add) continue to struggle with the basics of what they do every year - the admissions process?! The SRAR glitch and now they can’t figure out who to admit, deny, send notification date, give conflicting information over the phone aa AO staff not on the same page? This is like a monkey and a football. To say that they are ill-prepared for what they do as a business is an understatement. I am in buyer-beware mode if kid is accepted bc wondering if the entire university isn’t run like a Swiss time piece. No offense to UT students or grads, but to an outsider, this is certainly alarming, to say the least. 5 months and 1 day since application submitted and still no decision or an exact date for notification?! It’s Leap year too, so they even got an extra day to figure it out. Good grief!

I’d have to say I agree. All of my experiences with myself and my children have been at very large universities…my undergrad at the time was around 50k with grad students. And no technology. And our admissions process wasn’t this crazy. I don’t have a dog in this fight this year, but I will say it is making me very concerned about my daughter’s future interest in UTk. I don’t buy the excuse of ā€œoverwhelming numbers.ā€ My son’s school has experienced the same exact growth in applications and with none of this mess…and his experience there has reflected a well-run institution. Something is amiss.

Seems a little nuts to be so critical of the school when the deadline to notify applicants has not passed. Just because we all obsess over these portal changes doesn’t mean they have failed to uphold their end of the bargain. And to be fair you have no idea how disorganized or smooth it went at ASU admissions in the 80s. The process was invisible to everyone and for all you know you got your address label on someone else’s acceptance. So maybe take a breath

I think the analysis was fair. While yes, UTK has technically held up their end of the bargain, it’s ridiculous how unorganized this process has been. The SRAR glitch proved that when they were less than communicative with all the applicants that were affected by it. Not to mention, it should be expected that UTK at least has a uniform answer when asked when decisions come out. I’ve heard multiple different answers not only through this forum, but also myself. Good communication seems to be heavily lacking. Additionally, UTK should be well funded enough to upgrade their technology system. While the portal glitches have been a main topic here, I think a lot of us would agree this process would be a lot less stressful without them. I have not seen this many glitches and miscommunications from a college.

I also think that, like several other schools, the admissions criteria at UT-K has undergone an utterly transformational shift over the last few years. To use your ASU example, their admission criteria is largely formulaic (and published), leaving exceptionally few applicants subject to interpretation or even human assessment. Tennessee went from being a relatively easy admit to a rather complex one in a short period. That profoundly impacts the EA process, compounded by the volume that precipitated the selectivity change.

While my kid is certainly eager, I also agree that they have met every date that they published. Plenty of room for criticism if they don’t, but I’d save that for for Friday morning.

The srar glitch is a legitimate complaint beyond that I think ppl are spinning

Daughter applied to 14 schools and only 1 other school has been even close to this disorganized. And she applied to schools that were bigger and smaller etc. There has been basically almost no communication since she applied. Of course, this would be her first choice but to me there are other schools that have been way more communicative and impressive so far in this process. I mean people from out of state could be spending a ton of money to send a child here and I’m not even sure there will be enough housing for students after last year’s craziness.

What was the housing issue last year?

5,000 freshman ended up with out placement and they scrambled to put them in hotels.

Utk gives a lot of $$ oos for high stats kids. Up to 18k/year so that is certainly driving some oos interest

Really!? Wow so most of the freshman ended up in a hotel? How did that come to be and have they done anything to correct that for this fall

It happened to my friends niece … housing is supposedly an utter nightmare

I do believe they are in the process of building more dorms but who knows if they will be ready. They can’t guarantee housing for students other than Freshman and apparently it’s really hard to find affordable off campus housing.

Well said! Couldn’t agree with you more. On a side note, did you enjoy your time at ASU? Been accepted to Carey school of business there.

Looks like it will not be today, see you all tomorrow!
