Colleges (and all other web sources) should really provide clarity to instate vs out of state acceptance % for future hopefuls… But then again, it will probably stop all that extra revenue from too many applications and they wouldnt like that. I know I’ll be digging deep for this info with my next child to go through all this. There really should be some compliance oversight on the college application whole process.
California.
The same could probably be said for USC… I think they did much of the same… First year top 10% auto admit… 80 something % instate mandate… Lots of high stat deferred in EA and then waitlisted. Other than USC having no website flaws, and releasing results early (they under promised mid March and over delivered late Feb)… They seem to have the same pipeline of students …
DD24 was accepted. OOS. We are removing this from our list as daughter has other great choices that are both higher and lower ranked (per US News) with merit on both sides so hopefully that opens a waitlist spot for someone. This is ranked lower than my alma mater from the NE and I find it ridiculous that so many well qualified kids are getting waitlisted/denied/pathway’ed, given that those same kids would have been HAPPILY admitted not even two years ago. How absurd. UTK hasn’t magically gotten better the last two years. This same issue applies to many other “it” schools right now.
I find it crazy that they would choose UTK over Cox. And both LSU and JMU are no slouches either. I would talk to your kid more. But obviously to each their own.
It’s the lure to go south, to the SEC, ACC etc… pure volume. The colleges can do better at being honest about acceptance rates and maybe then less would apply…
Here is what I think happened:
- During EA, they did their acceptances and hit their target numbers.
- Then, the SRAR glitch was discovered and they had to admit a lot more additional (qualified) applicants.
- That basically meant they had very little room when it came time for RD, so they just waitlisted the vast majority.
Same…Oh well. War Eagle!!!
The college with the happiest students in the United States! And the best lemonade for miles. Congrats!
SMU is $85k per year for us. No financial aid is on its way. UTK will be $40-45k per year. LSU even less w/ their merit package. So the choice may be the middle of the road option for us cost wise.
I have a current student and let me tel you…it’s one hell of a school and campus. WAR DAMN EAGLE!’
Which is absolutely crazy bc 2 years ago this is where Texas kids went when they couldn’t get in to any of the Texas schools. Things change fast in admissions!
Gotcha. Has SMU said no on merit? I know they roll out more in March as kids decline and move on.
I have a quick question Cant ask her she’s too upset . Not everyone who got waitlisted were given the pathway and abroad options ? Correct and those kids are getting in before the just waitlisted kids
I have so appreciated this thread bc it makes me feel as if there is no rhyme or reason. My daughter is in state, rigorous private school, I am an alumni, she was waitlisted. Just under unweighted 4.0 gpa, 12 plus letters of academic recommendation sent in, test scores were not amazing but decent. Her leadership roles in national programs were excellent. Some
Kids from her school with worse grades got in. She is also a minority and we liked the diversity better at other schools. Maybe just a sign that this isn’t the place for her. We joined the waiting list but sucks as a parent to pay more for out of state education as she will likely be going to the University of Kentucky if not pulled off the list
Hi… sorry your child is so upset . It’s rough ! Are you asking if they all got it ? I believe anyone who got waitlisted did get 3 other options . There should be a list under the waitlist paragraph where it semi describes the choices you can take
Every school this year seems to weight things differently. Boulder weighted GPA and rank higher whereas UTK took low GPAs and rank if you had a high test score. It gets hard when your state school AO process doesn’t fit your strengths. So sorry ![]()
Now the wait continues as we wait to hear back from NC State. Won’t hear back until end of March.
IS/OOS needs to be a question on the common data in sections C1 and C2. How many first years applied /enrolled and waitlist for who is offered wl/admitted from.
Schools obviously already have this information.
My daughter was waitlisted. OOS, 3.9 GPA, 1400 SAT. Applied to be a history major and had a 5 on APUSH exam. Also NHS, History Honors Society, with strong leadership ECs. I wish it could have been clearer that this would not be enough for OOS - so hard watching her last night.
That said, congrats to all who got in and I know everything is going to be fine.
