2 great options, but they are quite a bit different from each other. Will be interesting to see what he picks!
I listed everything on the [Class of 2028 - University of Tennessee - RESULTS ONLY] thread. His intended major is aerospace engineering.
so did you indeed commit to UF?
It’s a cost thing now, but that’s what I want to do.
Stella77, is your son in at UT? I am starting to see some of the students at our HS posting they have decided on UT. We told our daughter to wait until we heard back from a letter requesting more merit $, she posted her commitment on the site before hearing back, then (coincidentally, lol) heard back from UT the next day.
Please do let me know if he chooses Tennessee! fwiw, when she did her campus tour a couple weeks ago, she met with a grad from our HS currently a FR at UT while there. Not someone she was friends with or even knew, she just reached out to her on social media. The girl was so kind to meet her for coffee, answer all her questions and is absolutely loving it in Knoxville. Said the IB program at our HS is tremendous preparation, so even though we did not get in our perceived #1 at the time (UNC), we finally feel like all her hard work in that program was worth it. We are so dang proud of her.
Good luck all and GO VOLS!
Congrats to your kiddo BMO8! Same exact experience for our daughter - we (foolishly, in hindsight) considered UTK a safety initially and it was below UNC and UGA on her list. After a LOT of college tours, her favorite campuses were UNC and UTK, with UGA pretty far down the line. She thought UGA was just too big, hated the idea of having to bus to class, etc. Was denied at UNC and bitterly disappointed. Then the visit to UTK sealed it for her, she loved it and truly believes she’ll thrive at a place that clearly wants her there. Checked all the boxes on her list.
And 100% agree on “college is what you make of it”. Truer words have never been spoken. Go where you’re wanted, where you feel you can thrive and put in the work - and GREAT things will happen.
2 awesome choices LCo3 - congrats to him! 2 very different campus settings so am curious what he decides.
Thanks. I don’t want to derail the conversation away from UTK. But I’ll say, yes they are different!
We live in the Atlanta suburbs and he’s currently dual enrolled with Tech in their distance math program. He had cool opportunities while in the gifted program in elementary school and Scouts in middle school to attend functions at Tech. They do a great job “recruiting” these young students and he’s never forgotten.
UF is where his dad and 3 aunts attended and he’s grown up a big fan (to my UGA-grad heart’s great sadness, lol.) He received scholarships at UF so the cost to attend is very close to what we’ll pay for GT, even though he’ll attend GT tuition-free thanks to the Zell Miller (Hope) scholarship in GA that’s funded by the lottery.
He has a tough decision to make. He asked me the other night how and why I chose UGA and I told him that ultimately, I decided for myself without worrying about what other people thought.
What state are you in?
Yes, he was admitted EA, but has not yet decided.
He was deferred from NC State and wants to visit Va Tech (also admitted) before he decides.
He loved UT when we visited last spring, as did we! Will let you know. Best of luck to you as well!
From what I have learned after talking with several people, test scores mattered A TON to utk, which is fine. However they claimed to be looking at the student holistically and I do not at all feel that they did. Math and science ACT scores seemed to be huge for them. I also am not sure what they waitlisted so many…. Maybe they should have just said no to more people.
I am assuming that you heard back from UT with an offer of more money? We are OOS, and my DS was admitted in the EA round. A bit more merit money might secure the deal for him (and us). He already received the TN Explore Scholarship of $13k annually. I am not sure how much more they’d be willing to give. Also, can I ask who you sent the request to - admissions, financial aid or someone else?
Daughter was accepted OOS Early Action with a Volunteer Scholarship. Since then we have not received any updates on Honor’s College or any possible to updates to merit. Has anyone else from EA received any updates on their merit scholarship or Honor’s decision? Time is ticking and need to make decision very soon.
Honors college decision came out about the same time as EA decisions.
Merit award would have been part of the admissions letter. Unless the kid applied to additional scholarships (usually program related), there wouldn’t ben an “update to merit”.
For some, like volunteer scholarship, but there are other competitive scholarships like chancellors scholarships that are announced later.
If she was waitlisted for honors it could be ans late as May 1st. As for other competitive scholarships like chancellors scholarships there is no stated date yet. I was told by the admissions office that it also could be as late as May 1st.
Understood. I was probably drawing too fine a line on the difference between Merit and Scholarship (though the net result is certainly a reduction in cost which is what matters!)
Is anyone confident in the ability of freshman to get competitive scholarship money beyond what is promised based on GPA and SAT scores? Does that require an application to the honors program? I have gotten mixed answers when I have called and asked the admissions office.
Wondering the same. I remember looking last year and auto merit scholarship amounts were a few thousand more, so I was wondering if they might be substituting the difference with other scholarships. The FAFSA delay could be hindering everything.
