University of Tennessee Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

I could not agree more.

Our UTK advisor said that it was a good sign, not everyone gets a chance to apply to Chancellor’s Honors Program. I guess we will just sit and wait. Hopefully sooner than later. Any idea when?

Did anyone get email about UTK Success Academy? S24 received email the other day that he should apply. Does this mean anything?

15%… This is getting insane. It’s great that all these schools are offering admits to their own state residents - i 10000% support that. I wish we did that in the northeast - but there is no such thing or no common market for tuition. Problem is they are becoming so competitive and they still give the same education as they did when they accepted 75%. I really also am shocked at how many admission counselors focus on just getting the applicant numbers up for the money and the stats… forgetting there are people here who just want to find a good fit to further their education.

15% spread accross every other state… for UTN. It’s hopeless if you worked all 4 years and ā€œonlyā€ have an A average and high 1300 SAT. all the work seems pointless after this week

I really feel for these kids. My daughter is a Freshman at TN and did get in EA last year with a 33 ACT and 4.2 GPA. And I say this bc TN was supposed to be a safety for her but OOS admissions dropped to ~30ish%. She was deferred at Clemson and didn’t get into either of her reaches. I really think the common app has totally screwed up admissions. I have a son that’s a HS junior and at this point I’m going to encourage him to aim much lower than she did.

Most universities have a target mix of in-state vs out-of-state students, and they stay fairly close to that mix. So accepting more in-state students due to the 10% thing should hurt in-state students MORE, unless the university also reduces their target class percentage of OOS students.

Recent reported % of OOS students in the freshmen class at UTK:
2023 - not yet reported
2022 - 45% (and 32% of all undergraduates)
2021 - 37%
2020 - 30%
2019 - 27%
2018 - 23%

I think the university was likely surprised by how many of their OOS accepted students ultimately chose to attend (which is reflected in those class % numbers.) because I haven’t heard that they were intentionally trying to ramp up the numbers. A lot of state universities keep the number around 33% OOS.

But how sad is that… to tell your junior to reach lower. The common app and whatever platform used to send transcripts (we use naviance) is confusing and delayed. That or my counselor is. Most requests never even made it it seems. I followed up and was told it was sent. I appreciate I got into some schools already but those are like ole mis and ones with over 95% acceptance rate. I have a younger brother and sister looking at me to set an example. I dont know what to do except hide tears cuz truth is an A isn’t good enough. Sports, volunteer work and studying sats if it doesnt get you over 1400 isnt good enough. All the chancing sites and stuff are bogus. I have not gotten into one target school. not one. only the safety which had me at 99% - again, because they take 99%. I give up.

Oh Emma! I’m so sorry you are feeling this way! It sounds like you are a bright, motivated, smart girl and you will do well wherever you wind up. Keep in mind that this is just EA and you may wind up getting into all of these schools RD. Or maybe you will wind up in an Honors program or with big merit $ at a less competitive school. Keep the faith. College acceptances are so random especially in the EA round.

Don’t give up, Emma! There’s RD and if things don’t ultimately work out at your target and reach schools you will love where you end up. The fact is that there is more than one college well suited for you.

Don’t give up. My son is the same except he hasn’t gotten in any school yet. I know you think this isn’t true, but you WILL get in where you are supposed to be. I know you have worked super hard and it will pay off. Keep the faith.

I really appreciate how nice you guys are. Maybe you can help me because what is the worst part is that my dad died when I was little and my mom was going to be a stay at home mom, but she also had to work to take care of us, and went to school at night so she always told us she was sorry she missed so much but wanted to get a better job but to show us how important a college education is. Now you get special consideration if you are first gen. My mom’s face when she first saw that broke my heart. She thinks now she took all that time from us and also hurt us. I really just wanted to get in some place like this EA so she wouldn’t feel bad. I know I will find a spot. I am so lucky to have any choices and I know that. I just feel so bad for her. for any of the moms who maybe have some way i can make her feel better about all this i would really appreciate it. I tell her shes the best but you know…she kinda feels like she messed up now because she does have a degree. I feel that shouldnt really be a factor tbh

Common App, while in theory is a practical idea, in practice is a bad idea and is at the heart of many problems. Feel bad for a lot of kids that are getting squeezed out not by OOS students but just the volume of applications. With a few clicks of a button can apply to 20 schools. PSU gets 150k applications. It’s a money grab by the schools. You want to know who really wants to come to your school - make the application fee lower if apply via school website but raise if apply via Commkn App to $150+

Hang in there Emma. Your mom sounds like a great woman. My two cents… just give her a hug. While may not see it at this precise moment, everything is gonna work out just fine for you, probably better than you ever could have hoped.

@jthandiii - you are 100% correct!!! My son knows kids who applied to 15-18 schools. Seriously?? That’s crazy!! If you apply to 18 schools then you haven’t done your homework. No one needs to apply to that many schools. You are absolutely right that this ease of access to apply via the common app is driving the numbers up and squeezing well-deserving kids out of college opportunities. Yes, raise the app fee!! In addition, limit the number of schools a student can apply to via the common app.

Agree with everything everyone says here, and especially can feel the frustration for Emma2330…I feel for you (going through the same thing and thoughts with my daughter). But shouldn’t the end result be the same, regardless if the common app is used or not? In other words, high amount of applications per kid, but same enrollment numbers should mean, in theory, that the end result is the exact same.

Emma, You will find your place. God has a plan for you, and for us all. One of my best friend’s son is at Ole Miss and he is loving it along with their ROTC program. So, if you by chance end up at your safety, things will work out there too. Sending a prayer your way from NJ.

Why would you expect a school to spend the money to handle a once a year event? Websites crash.

That is a great idea! Start a petition - I will sign it!

This is how UT-Austin is. Top 6% gives a tremendous amount of auto-admits, even though Top 6% at a non-competitive HS is a joke. Given the number of applicants they get in-state it is crazy, and makes admission to a non-top 6% in-state kid very difficult.

But this is what causes some of the kids to apply to 18 schools. They have no idea if they will get in a school anymore, even with traditionally great stats. So they hedge their bets. Then it squeezes the equally deserving kids out. A circle of madness.
