^^ Same.
I believe that person has been banned at this point. In the future, you could post the user’s name in this thread, since moderators and administrators check this thread fairly often. Thanks!
So, mobile users have no flag option AND have a difficult time sending PMs? Do we have any updates on these, @CCtech_David?
That’d be great. I really miss that feature. Particularly for college-specific forums.
I notice it is discouraged to post on old threads (did it accidentally today and it was promptly closed). Some other forums automatically close threads that don’t have any activity for, say, 6 months. Don’t know if that’s an option…
@Lenitus Thanks for checking about bookmarking forums and subforums. This would make the world of a difference when I help out high school students with their college searches.
We’ve actually had cases where a user resurrected an old thread around a timeless/evergreen topic and it was allowed to stay open. The moderators do try to consider this on a case-by-case basis. Having said that, I’ve primarily seen the threads closed. It’s still manageable at this point, but automatically closing threads due to inactivity may not be a bad approach. Thanks for the input!
That’s great feedback as well. Thank you.
The only time I actually like to see really old threads resurrected is when the OP posts an update. It’s nice to see those. But usually…old threads are old news. I would say any thread without activity for 12 months should be automatically closed. Some of the recently bumped threads have been more than several years old!
I would suggest making it a little longer than 12 months as there are things that happen annually that resurrect old threads, where the old posts are useful.
I think I have mentioned a few times around here that I still own a feature phone (i.e. non-smart phone), so the answer is a definitive no. After conferring with our product manager we’re looking into the possibility of adding a PM link directly on user profiles for the mobile skin (as what we have on the non-mobile site) instead of making users guess that they must click the inbox icon and then find the link to message someone.
I know I’ve seen OPs come back a few months later to follow up, but not typically much longer than that. Anyway, not sure dynamic thread closure will happen anytime soon, but it is an interesting idea.
Yes, that is a good point as well. Thanks!
Imo, some parents threads do need to stay open when the issues affect many and the thread history includes info and advice. A new post, even after a quiet period, can be a logical continuation.
But not so much the very individual sorts of threads- some issue that is now past. Eg, that vacation, whether to take class x in senior year, or chance me threads from kids long since gone off to college. Bugs me when someone awakens it for some new personal angle better handled otherwise. Or when a PM to that OP could suffice.
And we’ve been seeing quite a bit of this as of late! We especially frown on members who hijack an ancient thread containing a specific question posed by the OP and post their own question.
As you allude to, however, some older threads could be reasonably resurrected after a significant passage of time depending on the topic.
The other thing I see a lot is a brand-new poster resurrecting an old thread. Usually that means the person did a google search, found a thread, then uses it to promote a company, viewpoint, etc.
I do wish Google would start ranking newer threads ahead of old content, especially since recency of updates is a ranking factor. Granted, if the search performed is unique enough we may only have a 6-year-old thread that matches the search.
In my case, I did in fact google (if subject tests had score choice within a testing date), found the thread, did more research and then posted my findings…didn’t think to look at the date. It was closed immediately after I posted the update. (Not sure why, really, as it was a useful update, but whatever).
I agree it’s nice to see updates from people who had a thread going about an issue of interest. I suppose they could start a new thread for the update but then all those who’d bookmarked the original thread wouldn’t get a notification about it.
I’ve observed that when a new thread is started on a topic that’s been discussed before, people don’t like that either.
There have been several occurrences today of the same post being posted multiple times. Some of these have been from longtime posters who would not do this.
What’s up?
CC is being really laggy at the moment…
Hmm…haven’t seen this myself, but I did see your reported post about emeraldkity4’s duplicates. MaineLonghorn even mentioned she has seen this sort of thing a lot lately as well. When I see your comment, @topaz1116, I do wonder if page load times have slowed down and some members are hitting submit multiple times. Just a wild guess, but I have tagged our product manager for any other input he may have. Thanks!
