UT Austin Class of 2029 Official Thread

No, I do not. I think there will be lots of acceptances on Feb 15, if not before

Really, it didn’t seem that way from the thread.

What stood out to me is that there is an interim director and interim senior vp in leadership positions directly related to this situation.

Yes. Utter garbage.

My DS application changed to ‘still in review’ yday (in-state, non-auto, CS), like many others. Today, I see that his Polymathic Scholars application status updated to “ineligible” (it was in-review yday). Does anyone see the same status? Wondering why it is saying ineligible vs. rejected.

Have a look at Honors Application Tab and seems all Honors Program are ineligible to my DS25 which is new to us today.

Yes, my son’s changed- same basic message but this time adding “deferred”- also no spot to share any additional info from fall activities.

Seems to me that’s what a deferral is…providing more time to consider. Plus all that was promised on 1/15 was admitted, denied, or deferred. So I’m not really getting the outrage by folks?

UT did exactly what they said:

I think it was just that the messaging was not clear. Meaning it was inferred that it was a deferral but not specifically stated.

You are 100% correct.

Every year, UT Austin does exactly what they say they are going to do and, somehow, people still find a way to get upset about it.

This most certainly is not your typical deferral and not what they intended with the initial Jan 15 date. I can’t imagine previous years have this same rate of “deferrals” with zero denials on the published decision date.

If UT is going to defer applicants it should allow students to send additional information like 1st semester grades and updated info on ECs and awards. Michigan and Notre Dame defer and give advice on their websites about the information they want to see. What UT has done is a black box.

Because people aren’t used to UT having a waitlist/deferral process since this is the first year, and the assumption is that EA is supposed to give final decision for most since deferrals for 95% of the class aren’t that common unless it’s USC or UMich.

Lack of communication - not letting people know that it has its hands full and may release later in advance, not explicitly saying its a deferral on the portal, picking out of the RD group when EA did everything 2 months earlier…

Also, ED2 will probably release before, so if people wanted to pull their apps in advance for UT, they are now stuck.

Not saying you’re wrong, they did do what they promised, but the way it’s been presented is very poor + stressful.

Same for OOS McCombs. All have status of “Ineligible”. Ugh!

People are upset because:

  1. When they announced they were going to start Early Action, they stated that they would give a “guaranteed decision” by January 15th: UT Austin Reinstates Standardized Test Scores in Admissions - UT Austin News - The University of Texas at Austin

  2. Their website says that “some” applicants who meet the Early Action deadline may receive a defer decision by January 15. “Some” certainly implies something significantly less than 95%. Review & Decision Process - University of Texas Admissions

  3. They admitted RD applicants in the EA pool.

I think it’s also odd use of the word deferral. At least at most other schools, deferral means they reviewed your application carefully and are not sure if you are a fit for their incoming class and they want to re-review the application when all (RD) applications are in the mix to determine whether or not you fit in the class they are building. That doesn’t seem like what has happened here - here it seems that they haven’t had time to review most of the applications.

To add they changed the honors applications to “Inelegible” instead of “Reject” assuming they read the application and that is the outcome.

Ineligible implies the main application was rejected (at least that was my first thought). Does anyone who was deferred to 2/15 have their honors status as ‘in-review’?

I’m not sure why they are giving “soft” rejections but I think this new honors change means apps are being rejected.

I agree as well. Honors release date is March 1. If you are already ineligible I would assume the main application is rejected, but not sure why they want to defer.
